Chapter 3

Author: Waning Moon
I spent the next few days locked inside Ember Hall. Guards stood shoulder to shoulder beyond the doors. The place was sealed so tightly that not even a fly could slip through.

Lucien came once to persuade me.

"Aria, if you'll go apologize to Lina, I'll lift the confinement."

He stood there for a moment, waiting for me to say something. When I remained silent, he let out a sigh.

"I know you're upset, but I have to think about the wolves' future. Our numbers are dwindling, and the elders are pushing harder every day.

"You know, Lina gets pregnant easily. This pregnancy is crucial. If she delivers strong, healthy pups, the pack can grow again. We won't have to live under the shadow of other tribes."

He kept pressing me with talk of duty and righteousness until I finally turned to face him.

"For the wolves' future? Put your hand on your heart and say you don't have feelings for Lina. Weren't you two already sneaking around, and now you just want a respectable reason to make her your wife?"

His expression darkened at once, like I had struck straight at the secret he was hiding, and humiliation twisted into fury. "You're unbelievable! I thought you knew better, but you're nothing but jealous and unreasonable! I'm done talking to you!"

He spun on his heel and stormed away. From that day forward, he didn't appear before me again.

Time passed quickly, and the wedding day arrived.

As his first wife, I was expected to attend. I let the attendants dress me and guide me to my seat, my expression blank while I kept my own silent count of time.

Keaton should be arriving soon.

The wedding ceremony was held in the palace's largest hall.

Lucien wore his wedding suit, unable to hide his joy.

Lina dressed in white to match him, crowned with jewels and draped in a veil. Her belly was already showing, but she held herself as if it were her greatest triumph.

They seated me in an unnoticed corner. I watched the farce unfold with a calm, expressionless face.

Guests glanced my way and whispered, their voices drifting like gnats.

"Poor thing. She's a princess of the bird tribe, yet she has to watch her husband marry her former maid."

"Poor? Not at all! She brought it on herself! After all these years, she's only laid one mediocre egg, and she still won't let go of the queen's seat."

"Exactly. Look at Lina. She was pregnant even before the wedding, and they say it's triplets. That's the kind of wife who can actually grow the pack!"

I kept my expression calm, but my nails bit deep into my palm.

A bright voice cut through the noise. "What a lively wedding!"

Every head turned when the doors opened and Keaton walked in, clad in black, flanked by a squad of tiger warriors.

The hall rippled with sudden commotion. Everyone knew the tigers and wolves were hardly on friendly terms. Keaton hadn't been invited, and he certainly hadn't come in peace.

Lucien's expression darkened. "Keaton, it's my wedding day! Why are you here instead of minding your own tribe?"

Keaton ignored Lucien completely. He walked straight through the crowd to my table, pulled out the empty chair beside me, and sat down.

When he turned to me, his smile flashed bright enough to dazzle.

Lucien's expression went darker. Lina looked from Keaton to me, then lifted her voice so everyone would hear. "Did you see that, Lucien? I told you she and Keaton had something going on! They must have been together all along!"

It added fuel to the fire. Worked up from Keaton's arrival, Lucien snapped.

"Aria, is that true? What exactly is going on between you and Keaton?"

Keaton let out a mocking laugh and clapped slowly.

The next second, two tiger warriors marched in, dragging a man bound hand and foot.

He bore the head of a wolf on a human body, unmistakably one of Lucien's people.

The moment Lina saw him, the color drained from her face. She began to shake and stumbled back a step, barely keeping her footing.

Lucien noticed her change, frowned at the captive, and confusion flickered in his eyes. "Keaton, what are you doing?" he barked, barely holding on to his patience.

Keaton ignored him, fixing his gaze on Lina, a smirk tugging at his lips. "Do you truly not recognize him, Lina? Tell us whose pups you're carrying!"

A heavy thud sounded behind me. I stopped for a moment, but I didn't look back.Gasps rose in waves."Your Majesty!""Father!"Pierce stopped hitting Lina and gaped at Lucien, completely stunned.Keaton leaned toward my ear and whispered, "He knelt."They said a man's knees carried pride and honor, but his meant nothing to me."Aria, please... Please stay..." Lucien's voice broke with pleading. "If you stay, I'll do anything."When Keaton saw I wasn't moved in the slightest, he stepped in front of me and looked down at Lucien with open contempt."Lucien, if you're still a man, stop degrading yourself. You wanted your throne secure, and you refused to let Aria go, so you pushed all the blame onto a woman. You wanted everything while taking responsibility for nothing. Aren't you ashamed of yourself?"Color surged and drained from Lucien's face by turns. He tried to speak, but nothing came out. Every word Keaton said had been the truth.Keaton didn't spare Lucien another glance

Lina finally lost her nerve. She lunged for Lucien's arm and clung to him, sobbing. "No! Don't test it! Lucien, the pups are yours! They're our hope! You can't let them humiliate us like this!"Her panic read as guilt, and the room erupted."We must find out the truth! Otherwise, who would be convinced?""Exactly! You can't sweep something this big under the rug!""What are you so afraid of? If you're innocent, why refuse the test?"More voices joined until the hall surged with noise. One of them even rushed forward, dropped to his knees, and cried out, "Your Majesty, you must uncover the truth behind Calder's death! Please give him the justice he deserves!"The chaos was edging out of control. Any delay would only make it worse.Lucien's temples throbbed with anger. He shook Lina off and snapped at the guards, "Hold her! Mr. Dawson will conduct the spell!"Two attendants hurried over and strapped Lina into a chair.Lina fought and wailed, "No! Don't touch me! I drew the divorce papers out from my sleeve. An attendant stepped forward and set a tray with ink and paper on the table.I picked up the pen, dipped it into the ink, and signed my name in front of everyone. Every stroke cut cleanly through the life I was finally ready to leave behind.I slid the papers to Lucien. He snatched them and slashed his name across the page so hard the paper nearly tore. When it was done, I looked to the corner where Pierce stood. "Pierce, your father and I are divorced. By our laws, I'm no longer your mother."He jerked his head away. "I haven't thought of you as my mother for a long time. You're nowhere near as good as Lina. Just go! I only want her to be my mother!"My face stayed calm. "Alright. As you wish."From this moment on, I had no ties to the wolves. Whatever bound me to Lucien and Pierce ended here. After I put the divorce papers away, Keaton slowly turned to look at Rhett. With a flick of his fingers, the gag dropped from Rhett's mouth.

Lucien's eyes went bloodshot as he glared at me, a vein pulsing at his temple. "No! I don't agree!"He jabbed a finger at Keaton beside me, as if he meant to tear us both apart. "Did you plan this with him? Were you just waiting to force a divorce in front of everyone so you could throw yourself into his arms? You really have no shame!"I actually laughed. "Lucien, do you hear yourself? You slept with your sister-in-law, but I'm the shameless one for leaving you? What a joke! Since when do you get to own the moral high ground?"While I spoke, Keaton met my eyes, the two of us trading a quiet, knowing look. A faint smile tugged at his lips as he lifted his hand and waved it lightly through the air.The next second, armor scraped in unison outside the doors. A formation of tiger warriors swept into the hall, black plate armor gleaming and halberds drawn. They gave off a fierce, commanding presence, their eyes sharp and cold. They were clearly warriors who had fought their way throug

The room exploded in an uproar. Guests whispered to one another, their eyes sliding to Lina, full of doubt. One of the elders recognized the captive at once. "Isn't that Rhett Gale, deputy commander of the Graywolf Guard?""Rhett Gale? He served the late prince. He was one of his best men, wasn't he?""That's him! He fought alongside the late prince and helped us win those battles!"Whispers swelled through the room, every gaze snapping back and forth between Lina and Rhett.Lina clutched her belly with one hand and jabbed a shaking finger at Keaton. "Lies! You're slandering me! I'm carrying Lucien's pups. They're the wolves' future! Stop sowing discord!"She turned to Lucien, her eyes teary. "Lucien, don't listen to him! He can't stand to see us happy!"Then, a cold hint of malice flickered in her eyes. "Keaton, they say you still don't have a woman. You're probably impotent! That's why you're jealous of Lucien and me!"The hall erupted with a new round of murmurs.Lucien's f
