Chapter 7

"Mommy."

I jerked my head up.

April had come in at some point and was standing next to me.

I quickly locked my phone and forced a smile.

"What's wrong?"

She held up a velvet box, beaming.

"Mommy, look! I found a secret treasure!"

In the bedroom, April and I sat on the rug, slowly opening the box.

The first thing I saw was a beautiful card.

Written on it was a line of bold, flowing handwriting.

Even though April was young, Silas took time every night to teach her to read, so she knew a lot of words.

She looked at the card and read it word by word.

[Happy Birthday to my most beautiful Queen. Stay happy and gorgeous forever! Love you always and forever, Silas.]

"Haha, it's a birthday present from Daddy for you."

I stared silently at the property deed inside the box.

It was for a top-tier art gallery in Manhattan.

I had casually mentioned once that I loved the artistic vibe there, but the price tag was astronomical, so it was just passing talk.

I never expected Silas to secretly buy it.

My birthday was next week.

He was probably planning to surprise me.

April suddenly hugged me, her voice thick with tears.

"Mommy, why isn't Daddy back yet? I miss him so much. I think about him every night and I can't sleep. When is Daddy coming back?"

I reached out and held her tight.

"Daddy went somewhere very far away. It will be a long, long time before he comes back. Don't be scared, April. Mommy will always be here with you."

A tear quietly fell onto her hair.

Then another.

By the time April slowly fell asleep in her princess bed, her eyes were still swollen and red.

I kissed her little face, stood up, and left the nursery.

Late at night, a thunderstorm raged outside.

Accompanied by the thunder, I walked through the silent house.

Down the hall. Into the pool room.

The room where Silas died.

I pulled out my phone and opened Martha's stream.

She was still live.

There were more listeners now. The comments were flying by as the internet tried to help her analyze motives.

She stared intensely at the screen, answering them one by one.

"It wasn't a crime of passion. The authorities checked. Neither of them was having an affair."

"It wasn't for money either. She runs her own gallery, she never touched the Family business. She can't easily access Silas's assets anyway."

"There was no massive life insurance policy."

"..."

I set my phone on the vanity.

Against the backdrop of Martha answering the internet, I slowly turned and looked at the wall.

There was a relief tile embedded in the corner, perfectly flush.

I walked over slowly.

Lightning flashed outside the window.

The pool room's overhead lights buzzed and flickered twice.

Without looking up, I wedged my fingers around the tile and pried. A hidden compartment swung open.

Inside was a thick stack of handwritten notes.

"One raised in an orphanage, the other in a mafia family. Their paths had never crossed."

To the sound of Martha's voice, I slowly straightened up from the compartment.

I flipped through the notes page by page.

Every page was covered in writing.

Filled with diagrams calculating ventilation airflow and plant toxin extraction.

From the evaporation rate of water vapor, the volatilization speed of essential oils, to the dosage required for human inhalation...

I stopped on one particular page.

A neat line of small text was written across the top.

[Oleander Toxicity Thresholds & Paralysis Timeline]

The drawing in the center was exactly that of an adult male body lying face-up in a thermal pool, the water slowly rising over his mouth and nose.

I walked over to the fireplace and threw all the notes in.

Another flash of lightning tore through the sky, and the lights suddenly went out.

The pool room was plunged into darkness.

I struck a match and tossed it into the fireplace.

The flames slowly spread, licking at the paper.

All the handwriting and diagrams slowly turned to ash...

I actually hate writing by hand.

But anything digital leaves a trace.

After stirring the black ash in the fireplace until it was nothing but dust, I turned back and stared at the jumping audio waves on my phone.

In the dark, silent space, a low whisper echoed:

"Martha, why did you think it was me from the very beginning...?"

At that exact moment, Martha spoke into the microphone on the stream.

"Why on earth did she want my son dead...?"

It was a foggy day.I brought April to the private airfield to see Martha off.She was still wearing that old shirt, hooking the leather bag on one arm and clutching the cowboy hat in the other.Only now, her posture seemed much more hunched than when she arrived.April was playing nearby on a waiting room chair.Martha looked at me indifferently."I did it for April's sake."That morning, she had ultimately deleted the email and didn't hand over the evidence. She told the agents she had tried to record me confessing but failed to get anything useful. The agents scolded her harshly and left. Now, she looked at me from under her drooping eyelids."That night, you braved the hurricane to come see me. You guessed I hadn't looked at the cameras? You guessed I hadn't given the email to the FBI yet, so you came for one last desperate gamble?"I nodded, admitting it."Before, you couldn't even step into the pool room, let alone look at the water. That's a mother's natural fragility. So yes, I

Six months ago, I overheard Silas dealing with the traitor who set up that ambush on us.He said, "Force-feed him the drugs. Make it look like a suicide."The name of the drug he mentioned was the exact same one my father supposedly took before he died."Impossible!"In the quiet room, Martha slammed her hand on the table, her face flushed red as she screamed at me."You're just twisting the facts to fit your narrative! How could you decide Silas was a murderer based on that one thing?!"I looked at her numbly."Of course I didn't. So, I started verifying.""I used every excuse to cross-check his whereabouts during the time those homeless men died. They all matched.""I suggested setting up a charity foundation for the homeless. The flash of disgust and repulsion on his face was unmistakable."Martha's furious roar tore through the long night."What does that prove?! You're working backward from the conclusion! You only saw what you wanted to see!"I nodded slowly."You're right. Those

The hurricane howled outside. I sat on the edge of the thermal pool, lost in thought for a long time.Half an hour later, I slowly stood up.First, I went to check on April. She was sleeping soundly. I leaned down and kissed her forehead. Then I grabbed my car keys, opened the door, and walked out of the estate.I drove through the raging hurricane, through roads littered with debris, until I reached Martha's motel. The front desk was empty. I headed straight upstairs.I walked unhurriedly down the dim hallway and arrived at Martha's door.It was unlocked. She was sitting on the edge of the bed, a yellowed desk lamp turned on, her back to me as she looked at her phone.I walked in and stood behind her.Martha whipped around. When she saw my face, she actually calmed down."I knew you would come."I murmured an acknowledgment and sat in the room's only chair.Martha stood up, glanced out the window, and frowned slightly."Ten minutes before you got here, I forwarded the email to the FBI

The estate was sold.Though the price was well below market value, the cash was more than enough for April and me to leave New York and live a quiet life for a very long time. Our last night before moving out was a hurricane night.April was fast asleep. The storm raged outside.I wandered slowly through the somewhat empty mansion, mapping out our future. My phone chimed. An encrypted email alert.I picked it up casually, then instantly froze. The sender was Silas. My eyes widened. Trembling, I opened it:[Leonora, if you are receiving this email, it means I haven't logged in for a month and triggered the scheduled send. It means something has happened to me.Leonora, I love you, but I need to apologize. I have a secret. Unfortunately, I can never tell you. It's too bloody, too brutal. It's a secret I am destined to take to my grave.Because of this secret, on one hand, I love you like a devoted husband. On the other, I live like a ghost, constantly paranoid that an enemy will come for

The second I opened the door, she pushed past me and stormed in.She tore through the house, frantically searching, flipping things over. Her face was flushed, her expression manic."What are you looking for?" I finally asked. She spun around, glaring at me."It was oleander, wasn't it?!"I pressed my lips together.Staring at her in silence. Her cloudy eyes burned with an intense fire, her voice trembling but every word sharp."The FBI told me you had no motive, no method. You had an airtight alibi. You had a ton of witnesses and evidence. No one could guarantee Silas would slip and perfectly knock himself out in the pool.""I thought about those words over and over these past few days. I obsessed over them until I almost went crazy. And then, last night, I remembered something. I remembered Silas when he was eight.""That year, he accidentally ate an oleander leaf. He suddenly went rigid, completely paralyzed. I was terrified. His eyes were darting around—he was fully conscious, but

Martha walked in, agitated. It was her first time inside the home where her son lived. It was obvious she was emotional, her hands clenched tight, her chest heaving. When her eyes swept past the pool room, she visibly shuddered and quickly looked away in terror.I walked to the bar, grabbed a glass, and poured her some whiskey. She shook her head, refusing it, eyeing me warily."If you have something to say, just say it."I pursed my lips.I pulled out my phone, made a call, and murmured a few words.A moment later, a video call came through.I answered and handed the phone to Martha. She looked at me in confusion."This is Silas's most trusted right-hand man, Leo. He knows the most about that incident with the homeless men you're talking about."Martha took the phone and looked at the man on the screen.Leo's steady voice came through."Mrs. Vexille, I saw you at the funeral last time. My deepest condolences.""I don't know why you're interested in that old incident, but the Boss's wi
