Chapter 2

Author: Fiery Cow
Half an hour later, I finally saw Felix in the VIP suite.

He looked thin and pale, tubes running everywhere. Machines kept track of every heartbeat and breath.

Penelope wiped at her eyes. "He suffered a traumatic brain injury. The surgery went well, but recovery takes time. Maybe six months. Maybe three years.

"We wanted someone to stay by his side. Not because we need help changing his sheets or cleaning him up—we can hire nurses for that."

I understood what she meant.

For coma patients, emotional connection mattered.

Someone needed to talk to him every day, keep his mind engaged, give him reasons to come back.

But Felix's condition couldn't be made public.

And Penelope was busy holding Floyd Corp. together.

Sienna had been the obvious choice.

Instead, it ended up being me.

Felix's spirit stood beside the bed, looking miserable. "I really thought Sienna would stay with me. Guess I was wrong. All I wanted was someone dependable to read me the financial news every day. Why is that so hard? I don't even know if Ruth can pull it off..."

After listening to him complain for a while, I figured it out.

His consciousness was separated from his body.

That's why I could see him.

The moment he woke up, his spirit would return to where it belonged.

Once I had a plan, I laid it out.

"I'll read the news to Felix every day. I'll keep movies and music playing. I'll tell him about the weather and bring in different scents so he stays connected to the outside world."

I paused.

"As for taking care of him, I'd like to handle that myself if that's okay. It'll help us build a stronger connection."

Penelope and Felix both looked skeptical.

Neither of them believed I'd actually follow through.

They changed their minds the next day.

When Penelope came into the room—

I had just finished shaving Felix.

He looked a lot more like himself.

A newly released movie played on the TV while I quietly explained parts of it.

At the same time, I was reading financial news from a tablet right on schedule.

A cup of fruit tea sat beside his bed, its scent covering the sharp smell of disinfectant.

I'd even set up a small bed in the room.

I planned to stay with him twenty-four-seven.

Penelope looked genuinely touched. "You can go back to the estate at night."

I smiled.

As long as I didn't have to go back to my parents' house, I was good.

"Staying here helps strengthen my connection with Felix. It'll help him wake up."

As I spoke, I secretly glanced at Felix's spirit.

His expression had softened. "Sienna's always been spoiled. Even if she'd come, she wouldn't have taken care of me like this. Ruth actually seems dependable. Maybe this accident wasn't all bad."

Looks like I passed Felix's personal review.

Everything after this should be a lot easier.

"Huh?"I was still riding the high of getting twenty million dollars and didn't process the question right away.Felix let out a short laugh. "Because I cared way too much about appearances—and because Sienna hated strong smells—I told everyone I couldn't stand blue cheese. But during those six months, I couldn't speak."So how did you know?"Tell me the truth, Ruth. When my mind was separated from my body... could you see my spirit?"Oh, crap.So that question earlier hadn't just been a signal. He'd been testing a theory."I... uh... while you were in a coma, you talked in your sleep sometimes. I was in your room twenty-four-seven, so I accidentally overheard you."My eyes darted away.Felix immediately pressed."Oh yeah? What exactly did I say?""You said you were craving blue cheese. You said that once you woke up, you'd eat a whole wedge by yourself—"I slapped a hand over my mouth.Crap.I'd just repeated his spirit's exact words without thinking.Seeing my red fac

Sienna started shaking. This time, I refused to back down.I'd done it. And even if nobody wanted to admit it, the hospital security footage could prove I was telling the truth. After only a brief hesitation, I stepped forward. "It was me. I've been the one taking care of you these past six months. I stayed by your side. I played movies, music, and opera for you. I read you the news. I wiped you down every day. It was always me."Things had gone completely off script.Yet when Penelope saw me finally standing up for myself, she actually looked relieved.Felix almost smiled, like my answer had amused him.Like he was satisfied. The moment our eyes met, a strange thought crossed my mind. What if he'd remembered everything the second he woke up?Everything from when he'd been a spirit.Maybe he'd dragged this out on purpose to see whether I'd finally stand up for myself. The only thing I wondered was whether he remembered the twenty million dollars. If he did, could he hurry

The standoff dragged on until Penelope finally spoke."Ruth, I've never seen my son eat blue cheese. He watches what he eats. Normally, he wouldn't touch something that rich. I know you're having a hard time accepting this, but given the situation..."The more she talked, the heavier my heart felt.So everything Felix's spirit told me had been wrong?Had I gotten my hopes up for nothing?"Ruth, I know you're a good person. But Sienna is my son's fiancée. Some things aren't for us to decide. Let's stick to our agreement, okay? That way this doesn't get ugly, and you don't end up embarrassing yourself."Maybe Penelope was trying to give me a graceful way out.Right there in the room, she transferred fifty thousand dollars to me and promised she'd arrange additional compensation after I left.It was a lot of money.Enough to leave, study the major I'd always wanted, maybe even go abroad. But looking at Felix's familiar yet unfamiliar face, all I felt was unwillingness. Why?I

My breath caught, but my eyes slowly lit up.Could Felix still remember fragments of the past? Was this his way of signaling me?Thinking back to everything we'd been through together, the answer was already on the tip of my tongue."It's—"Before I could finish, Sienna shoved me aside."You've never spent time with Felix. You don't know him. How would you know what he likes to eat? Move. I'll answer."She completely blocked me and launched into her answer. "We dated for three years. I know you better than anyone. I know exactly what you want most right now. What you want is the chicken soup I make with my own hands."The more she talked, the more confident she became. "Last year, when you got sick, I made it for you once. You were so touched. You said it was the best thing you'd ever tasted. You even told me that every time you got sick, you wanted to drink the chicken soup I made."But you were in a deep coma, so even if you wanted it, you couldn't tell me. I made chicken sou

Everyone froze. The expressions on Sienna's face and my parents' faces immediately darkened. The three of them exchanged a quick look.Sienna reacted first, stepping in front of me again."Ignore her. She's just some nurse who snuck in here. I'll get rid of her."Her nails dug into my arm as she tried to drag me away.Felix looked more awake now.More focused."Move."His voice was low and sharp.Nothing like the chatty spirit I'd spent six months with. This was the real Felix Floyd.Cold. Commanding. Before I could process that, he lifted a hand and pointed straight at me."You. Come here."Sienna panicked. She shot me a vicious look. "Don't go."Her voice dropped to a whisper. "If you do, I'll make you regret it. Don't forget what I've put you through all these years. I still have plenty of ways to make your life miserable."Know your place. Felix isn't someone you get to dream about."I hesitated.Should I take Penelope's compensation and leave?Or take the risk

"Was it really you taking care of me?"His voice was cold. And the look in his eyes made it clear he didn't believe her.Sienna froze. For a split second, guilt flashed across her face.Felix coughed weakly, then asked again. "Answer me. Was it you?"I had just stepped forward, but stopped. My heart started pounding. If Felix was questioning her, then he remembered something.Maybe not everything. But something. And that meant there was still hope.At the very least, my twenty million wasn't gone yet.Seeing the situation turn, my parents rushed forward together."Of course it was, Felix. This is your fiancée, Sienna. The woman you love. Don't you remember?""You just woke up. It's normal to be confused. Sienna's been taking care of you these past six months."They crowded around his bed, deliberately blocking his view of me.Penelope gently touched my shoulder before stepping in. "That's enough. Give him some space. Don't overwhelm him."Only then did Sienna reluctan
