Maxine’s POV

Everything was happening too fast.

One moment, I was being shoved toward a gurney, my hands already moving on instinct and my brain switching into doctor mode despite the chaos in my chest.

The next moment, I heard my name.

“Maxine.” Reese’s voice cut through everything.

I turned in the direction of his voice, my pulse still racing.

My thoughts were scattered between two worlds I couldn’t seem to separate anymore.

  • He choose the ice, now he wants me back   Chapter 19

Maxine’s POV I could not sit still, not even for a second. The moment I stepped back into my office, I dropped the file on my desk and started pacing like something inside me had been set loose and refused to settle. I kept going back and forth like my mission was to wear a hole inside the tiles. “A transfer.” I muttered. Hex was being transferred. The words did not feel real, even though I had seen the document with my own eyes, even though my name sat right there at the bottom like the final piece needed to make it official. My signature was all it took for this nightmare to be over and then he would be gone. “No,” I muttered, stopping abruptly. Standing behind my desk now, I pressed my palms against my desk as I stared down at the file. “Why does this bother you?” I whispered to myself. The answer came too quickly

  • He choose the ice, now he wants me back   Chapter 18

Maxine’s POVIt had been five long, suffocating, and emotionally draining days since I had been away from work.Five days of hospital walls, quiet prayers, forced strength, and sleepless nights spent watching my son breathe. But now, Creed is better. He was smiling and laughing again and that was enough for me. I walked into my office early that morning, my heels clicking softly against the floor and my shoulders squared like I had something to prove. My desk looked exactly the same as I had left it.It was neat, organized and professional, a stark contrast to the chaos that had been my life for the past few days.Pushing my feet into my work crocs, I exhaled slowly, setting my bag down before sinking into my chair. For a moment, I just sat there letting the silence settle in my head while I regulated my breathing. After a while, I reached for the file waiting at the center of my desk. The fi

Hex’s POV“Hold on… Doc turned you down?” Vance sounded like he was personally offended.I didn’t look up, but I could already picture his face. His eyes were wide and his brows were raised like Wolfe had just told him the most unbelievable story of the year.“Yeah,” Wolfe replied, dragging the word out like he was still trying to process it himself. “She flat out said she doesn’t move with players. Especially my kind.”The moment he said those words, the locker room erupted.Laughter bounced off the walls, loud and unfiltered. It was the kind that only came from guys who had never really been told no in their lives.“Ain’t no way,” someone from the back called out.“Bro, what did you do?” another chimed in. “You must’ve fumbled hard.”Wolfe scoffed, shaking his head as he leaned back against the bench.“I didn’t fumble anything,” he said defensively. “She just… shut me down.”“Damn,”

The next moment, I heard my name. “Maxine.” Reese’s voice cut through everything.I turned in the direction of his voice, my pulse still racing. My thoughts were scattered between two worlds I couldn’t seem to separate anymore.Reese stepped forward, already assessing the situation with a single glance.“I’ll handle this,” he said firmly. For a second, I just stared at him.A part of me wanted to argue and insist I could do my job but the other part, the louder part was screaming at me to go and find out what was wrong with my son. “Go,” Reese added, softer this time, his eyes settling on me.He wasn’t just looking at me, he was reading me and unfortunately, he could see ev

  • He choose the ice, now he wants me back   Chapter 15

Maxine’s POVCreed’s skin was too warm. That was the first thing I noticed when I touched his forehead that morning. It wasn't the soft, sleepy warmth of a child curled under blankets. It was hotter and that made my stomach drop instantly.“Addie,” I called, my voice tighter than I intended as I adjusted him in my arms. She appeared almost immediately, her hair still messy from sleep. Her eyes narrowed the moment she saw my expression.“What is it?” She gasped. “He’s burning,” I said quietly. She stepped closer, placing the back of her hand against his forehead.“Shit,” she muttered.Creed whimpered softly, shifting against me, his small fingers clutching weakly at my shirt.“Mom…” he murmured.“I’m here, baby,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to his temple.Panic simmered beneath my calm exterior, but I forced it down.I couldn’t afford to panic, not now, not ever.“We need to bring his temperature down,” Addie said, already moving toward the bathroom. “Cool napkins, meds…”“I know,” I

Hex’s POVI didn’t stop her, I just stood there, leaning slightly against the wall. I watched her as she pulled out her phone like she was about to file a formal complaint against me in real time. And somehow, I found it funny. It was not the situation or the fact that she had just shown up at my apartment after three years of silence. But her. This version of her was sharp, fired up and ready to drag me straight to my coach like I was some reckless rookie who needed supervision.A quiet chuckle slipped out before I could stop it.God, some things never change. Her head snapped up instantly, her eyes narrowing into that familiar glare that used to make me behave. “You think this is funny?” she huffed.I pushed off the wall slowly, raising my hands in mock surrender.“Come on, Max,” I said, my voice lighter than I felt. “I just need some time off.”She stared at me like I had just said the most ridiculous thing in the world.“You don’t decide that on your own,” she shot back. “That’

Maxine’s POVIt had been two weeks, fourteen days and three hundred and thirty-six hours of carefully avoiding one person in a building that suddenly felt too small for both of us.Leaning back in my chair, I exhaled slowly as I stared at the stack of files on my desk. Maxine’s POVThe second I stepped out of that room, I couldn’t breathe as everything hit me all at once.I didn’t stop walking because if I did, I would fall apart right there in the middle of the hallway, and I refused to give him that kind of power over me again. My heels clicked too fast against
