Chapter 167

I hesitated, my throat tightening. They were right, my house wasn’t home. It was a place filled with memories of struggle, of late-night tears and memories of Mr. Rivers, but moving in with them? That felt… too much. Too intimate. Too dangerous for my heart.

“Lucian…” I began softly. “I can’t impose.”

“You wouldn’t be,” he said firmly. “You’d be family.”

Matthew nodded in agreement. “Exactly. My wife’s gone, and the house has been too quiet for years. Having you there would make it feel alive again.”

Their kindness overwhelmed me. I bit my lip, torn between gratitude and hesitation. “I’ll think about it,” I whispered.

Lucian’s expression softened. “That’s all we ask.”

The next day, the sun was blazing bright, the sky impossibly clear, as if the universe itself wanted to bless their return home.

I stood with them at the hospital entrance, helping the nurse load Matthew and Lucian’s belongings into the car.

Matthew took a deep breath of fresh air. “Ah, freedom,” he said, str

Chapter 168As soon as we entered, Matthew sighed contentedly. “It’s good to be home,” he said. “I think I’ll sleep for a week straight.”Lucian helped him to his room while I unpacked a few things in the guest room, though by the way they treated me, it already felt like my own. That evening, I made tea for all of us. We sat in the living room. Matthew in his recliner, Lucian on the couch beside me. The air buzzed softly with crickets outside. It felt peaceful and whole.Matthew spoke first, his tone full of quiet gratitude. “I never thought we’d see this day.”Lucian nodded. “We’ve been through hell,” he murmured. “But maybe… maybe this is what survival looks like.”I smiled into my teacup. “Peace suits you both.”Lucian turned to me, his gaze steady and full of warmth. “It suits you too.”I looked up at him, our eyes locking for a heartbeat too long. There was something new in his expression..... something tender, unspoken and dangerous.I looked away quickly, pretending to sip my

  • HE LEFT ME FOR MY STEPSISTER, I MOVED ON TO THE NEXT   Chapter 166

Chapter 166Lucian groaned. “Dad, really?”I turned and laughed, watching Matthew step into the sunlight with the aid of a cane. His recovery was remarkable, each day, his steps grew stronger, his humour brighter. He looked at me with a teasing glint. “Don’t let him fool you, Elena. When he was a boy, he couldn’t even stand up without drama.”Lucian rolled his eyes. “And now look at me,” he said proudly, taking another shaky step forward.Matthew chuckled. “Yes, yes.... you’re still dramatic, just vertical.”I laughed with them, the sound echoing softly through the courtyard. It felt good to laugh, to breathe without the heaviness of fear pressing down on us.Matthew came closer and placed a warm hand on my shoulder. “You’ve done so much for us,” he said gently. “You gave me my life back… and you gave my son hope again. That’s something I’ll never forget.”His gratitude made me lower my gaze, suddenly shy. “You don’t have to thank me, Matthew. This family.... you, Lucian, you’ve all g

  • HE LEFT ME FOR MY STEPSISTER, I MOVED ON TO THE NEXT   Chapter 165

Chapter 165The weeks that followed were a blur of sunlight, medicine, and soft laughter, the kind of peace that comes only after surviving a storm.Every day began with the gentle chime of morning light through the wide hospital windows, falling in slanted ribbons across white sheets and polished floors. The scent of disinfectant still lingered faintly in the air, but somehow, it no longer smelled sterile, it smelled like safety.Matthew had improved beyond what anyone expected. His face regained its colour, the shadows under his eyes had faded, and his laugher, deep and full, filled the room like a hymn.Lucian’s condition, too, had begun to change. The wheelchair was no longer his world. Each day, he stood a little longer. Each day, he took one more step, guided by my hands, steadied by my voice. It was a slow, fragile process, but every small victory felt monumental. That morning, the hospital garden was washed in gold. The air carried the light fragrance of jasmine, and the faint

Chapter 164Matthew’s eyes widened. Slowly, weakly, he smiled. “My son.”That was all it took.Matthew reached out, his fingers trembling, and placed his hand against Lucian’s cheek. For a second, neither spoke. They just stared at each other, father and son, both broken, both still alive. Then Lucian leaned forward, his voice trembling. “I thought I’d lost you.”Matthew’s own eyes shimmered with tears. “I thought I’d lost you too.”The silence that followed wasn’t empty, it was full. Full of everything they couldn’t say, everything that had nearly been stolen from them.I stepped back quietly, letting them have the moment. My heart ached in the best possible way.Lucian rested his forehead against his father’s hand. “You’re here because of her,” he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. “She saved you.”Matthew’s gaze lifted to me, his eyes warm with gratitude that words couldn’t hold. “Thank you, Elena,” he said hoarsely.I shook my head, tears gathering again. “You don’t ha

Chapter 163His eyes glistened with tears. “We made it through. That’s all that matters.”He nodded faintly, but his expression remained haunted, the adrenaline hadn’t left his system yet. His gaze darted to the door where Jasper had disappeared.“He’ll come back,” Lucian murmured, his voice trembling. “I saw it in his eyes. He won’t stop.”I placed a hand on his cheek, forcing him to look at me. “We’ll handle it if he does. You’re not alone, Lucian. Not ever again.”His lip quivered, a small, broken smile fighting through the exhaustion. “You saved me,” he whispered.I shook my head gently. “We saved each other.”For a long second, we just sat there in silence, his head bowed, my hands still holding him. The sirens faded in the distance, and the faint beeping of the monitors reminded me where we were. Then he blinked, as if remembering something important. “My father,” he whispered suddenly, his tone urgent. “Where’s my father? Is he....”I squeezed his hand, smiling through the tear
