Aloe's POV

The family court building felt nothing like the imposing federal courthouse where bigger legal battles played out. This was smaller, more intimate, designed for the personal tragedies of divorce and custody rather than the impersonal drama of criminal proceedings.

Wakes sat across the courtroom with his legal team—three expensive attorneys in suits that probably cost more than most people's monthly rent. He looked composed, successful, exactly like the kind of father any judge would trust with a child.

Which was exactly the problem.

"Remember," my attorney Rachel Morrison whispered, "stay calm, answer honestly, don't let him provoke you into emotional responses. This judge has seen manipulation tactics before."

Judge Patricia Brennan was in her sixties, with the kind of no-nonsense expression that suggested she'd presided over too many ugly custody battles to be easily fooled. She reviewed the preliminary filings with careful attention, then looked up at both parties.

  • Heartbreak And Wars   Chapter 100: Unexpected Help

Wakes’s POVThe call came in the middle of the quarterly board meeting.A dozen executives were seated around the glass table, half of them talking, the rest pretending to listen. Numbers, graphs, projections, they filled the screens like a blur of meaningless noise. But when my phone vibrated and I saw Aloe’s name, the noise disappeared. She never called me. Not in years. Not unless it was about Evelyn.I didn’t ask permission to step out. I just did, the sound of my chair scraping across the floor silencing the conversation behind me.In the hallway, the signal was strong, her voice trembling through the line before I could even speak.“Wakes…” she started, breathing unsteady.“What’s wrong? Is Evelyn okay?”“Evelyn’s fine.” A pause. “Blake’s not.”The words froze me where I stood.“He’s in federal custody,” she continued, each syllable taut with panic. “They’re saying he violated his plea deal. The judge set bail at five hundred thousand dollars. We don’t have it. Not even close.”

  • Heartbreak And Wars    Chapter 99: The Arrest

Aloe’s POVThe morning air bit through my coat like punishment. The federal courthouse loomed in front of me—gray, cold, merciless.I stood on the steps clutching James to my chest, trying to keep him warm and calm while my insides twisted. Blake was inside, turning himself in. Voluntarily, the lawyers called it. But it didn’t feel voluntary, it felt like surrender.Sofia hovered beside me, pacing a short line across the steps. Her usual poise was gone, replaced by restless energy.“He’ll make bail,” she said, her tone steady but her eyes refusing to meet mine.“He’s not a flight risk. Completed his previous sentence. He’s got family, ties, and stability. The judge will see that.”I wanted to believe her. “But what if he doesn’t?” I asked, my voice breaking on the last word. James squirmed in my arms, whining softly, unaware of the storm closing around his father. I kissed the top of his head and swallowed the rising panic.People passed us without looking—lawyers with briefcases, re

  • Heartbreak And Wars   Chapter 98: The Forensics

Blake's POVDr. Sarah has no relation to prosecutor David who was one of the country's top digital forensics experts. Her Manhattan office was filled with high-end computer equipment that cost more than I'd earn in five years at the legal aid clinic."These are sophisticated forgeries," she said, examining Morrison's documents on multiple screens."Whoever created them understood metadata structures, email protocols, and digital signatures. This wasn't amateur work.""Can you prove they're fake?" Sofia asked."I can prove some are definitely manipulated. Others..." Dr. David pulled up a particularly damning email allegedly from me to Heron Lewis. "This one is either genuine or forged by someone with access to your actual email server from that time period."My stomach dropped. "I never sent that email.""Then someone hacked your account and sent it, or created perfect forgery using your actual email infrastructure." She zoomed in on metadata. "See this timestamp? It's consistent wit

  • Heartbreak And Wars    Chapter 97: The Custody Hearing

Aloe's POVThe courtroom felt suffocating despite its spacious design.Wakes sat across the aisle with his attorney Patricia Holbrook, his expression carefully neutral. Blake sat beside me with Karen Ross, tension radiating from every line of his body.Judge Morrison, no relation to Senator Morrison, thankfully reviewed the emergency motion with professional detachment."Mr. Savage, you're requesting modification of custody arrangements based on renewed federal investigation of Mr. Matthew. Explain your concerns."Wakes stood, and I was struck by how genuine he seemed. "Your Honor, I'm not questioning Mr. Matthew's past rehabilitation. But new allegations suggest he may have been involved in a criminal conspiracy more extensive than originally disclosed. My daughter Evelyn spends significant time in his home. Until these allegations are resolved, I believe supervised visitation is appropriate precaution.""Ms. Matthews," Judge Morrison turned to me, "how do you respond?"Karen had pre

  • Heartbreak And Wars   Chapter 96: The Investigation

Blake's POVThe federal prosecutor assigned to my case was Assistant U.S. Attorney David, a young and ambitious man, exactly the type who'd see reopening a closed case as a career opportunity rather than justice."Mr. Matthew, these documents from Senator Morrison's estate suggest you had prior knowledge of the Sanctuary's operations." David spread emails across the conference table. "Care to explain why you didn't mention this during your original cooperation?"I studied the emails with Sofia beside me, my attorney Margaret back on the case despite having retired. The documents looked authentic, it has my email address, proper formatting, dates that aligned with my investigation timeline. But I'd never written them."These are fabricated," I said. "I had no prior knowledge of the Sanctuary until Sofia's investigation revealed it during Aloe's rescue.""Convenient claim, considering Senator Morrison can't defend his allegations." David pulled up another document. "This email, dated

  • Heartbreak And Wars   Chapter 95: The Past Returns

Aloe's povLife had settled into comfortable routine–Blake working at legal aid, me volunteering while raising James and co-parenting Evelyn with Wakes. Three years of marriage had proven we could build something real from our complicated beginning. Then Sofia called with news that shattered our peaceful existence."Blake, there's a problem. A big one."I watched Blake's face change as he listened, saw color drain from his features. When he hung up, his hands were shaking."What's wrong?" I asked, moving James off my lap to focus on Blake."Senator Morrison died in prison last week. Heart attack." Blake sat heavily on the couch. "His lawyer just released his final statement—a confession detailing everything about the Sanctuary conspiracy, including information he claims proves I knew more than I testified to."My blood went cold. "What does that mean?""It means Morrison is claiming I was involved in the Sanctuary operation from the beginning. That I knew about the political conspirac
