The coach didn't say anything about what had happened, or how they were touching…he focused on the team like it was none of his business.

“You're affecting Lukas performance!” The coach spat and Viktor nodded…no arguments, corrections…nothing. Lukas frowned slightly, turning toward him, confusion sitting plainly on his face. He expected something…anything but Viktor didn’t look at him and didn’t explain. He didn’t even try.

“Enough training!” The coach continued, “Go home!” And they both left.

  • Hearts on Ice   Chapter 30: Why did you leave?

The room had finally gone quiet. Their tears and laughter had been put to a pause and it was not the awkward kind of quiet they used to sit in after a fight, not the one that was filled with things unsaid…this one was…soft and heavy in a different way. Safe, almost.Viktor lay on Lukas’s chest, his head tucked just under his chin, fingers lazily tracing nothing in particular against his skin. The ring caught the light every now and then, small glints that pulled Viktor’s attention back to it like he still couldn’t believe it was real. Like he still could accept they had become official. Lukas had his own ring on too and Viktor's eyes couldn't stop looking back at them both.Lukas’s arm rested around him, loose but present, his thumb moving slowly against Viktor’s side without thinking about it. They hadn’t spoken in a while; the last time they did was to cry and they were fine with the silence. They didn’t need to speak…they just needed to exist. A few moments later, something shifted

  • Hearts on Ice   Chapter 29: Arms that hold me.

“This is where we'll be ending, see you next class.” The lecture ended and Lukas picked up his bags in a hurry. He had checked for Viktor everywhere but he was nowhere to be found…like he didn't attend classes today. Viktor had a set of people he used to sit around and Lukas walked up to them, hand in pocket.“Hi…” he said, his gaze focused on Linden…the guy who rumors spread about that he was into other guys. He and Viktor had drifted apart but he was still accessible to him and it irritated Lukas.“What's up, Reiner?” Another girl answered, Lukas didn't know her name and his expression showed it all. He tilted his head and she helped him. “I'm Lydia…anything the problem?”“Uhh…” he scratched his head, unable to ask the question he had practiced on his way here.“Did…Volk– I mean vik–” he stammered and she cut him short. A soft laugh escaped from her lips, as she struggled for breath. Lukas stood there confused and watching…he didn't know if he should be offended or not. She spoke af

  • Hearts on Ice   Chapter 28: It can't be you.

Lukas didn’t sleep properly. His dreams had taken another form…now, Viktor didn't fight for him, he watched him and that broke something in Lukas every time. Now, when he wakes up, he's too exhausted from fighting his dreams to fight anything in the actual world and it wasn't very pleasant. He woke up again, tired and sweaty, he lay there for hours, staring at the ceiling like it held answers to everything but it clearly didn’t have. Every time he closed his eyes, Viktor’s voice came back, cold and calculating.‘You only come back when I pull away.’It didn’t leave his mind, nothing Viktor said or did ever left his mind. Not even when the morning came.By the time he got to school, he already looked irritated. His jaw was tight, his steps uneven, like he had been arguing with himself the entire way there, his clothes were still sharp. If just anyone had seen Lukas, it wouldn't be a shocker to them. His mind raced and his eyes searched but instead of Viktor, he saw her.Klaire.She wa

  • Hearts on Ice   Chapter 27: You're too late

Lukas didn’t let go of Viktor. His fingers stayed wrapped around Viktor’s wrist as though if he loosened it even a little, he’d lose him completely…again…and he doubts he'll survive alone. His head was still bowed, eyes on his feet, shoulders tight, breath uneven. The words had already left his mouth but they didn’t feel like enough…nothing he ever said did. It was his curse.“Don’t leave me alone…please.” he continued, his voice shaking and reducing. The silence that followed wasn’t empty a single bit. It was heavy and thick…like it was choking both of them all at once and for a second, Viktor didn’t move. He just stood there, looking straight at him…memorizing this, the way Lukas’s grip trembled slightly, at the way his head stayed lowered like he couldn’t even look at him after saying that.Something about it…pulled him but something else held him back and slowly…very slowly…Viktor pulled his hand out of Lukas’s grasp. His eyes were still soft and he wasn't harsh or forceful. For o

  • Hearts on Ice   Chapter 26: Do not ignore me

The change didn’t come loudly. It wasn’t even a fight or some dramatic scene that everyone could point at and say that’s where it went wrong. It was quieter than that…subtle…just like Viktor himself. It would have been unnoticeable to anyone else, but not to Lukas.Because he felt it immediately and it lasted days.Later that day, by the time he got to school, Viktor was already there. Not waiting this time, not leaning against the gate like he used to. He was standing with a few teammates, listening to something Sam was saying, nodding occasionally and he even laughed once—low and brief—but it was still there and that alone felt strange.Lukas slowed down as he approached, his eyes fixed on him, waiting for that moment…that instinctive glance, that tiny shift in Viktor’s expression when he noticed him, yet…it didn’t come. Not even a tiny flicker.Lukas walked past them, close enough that their shoulders could have brushed if Viktor had just moved a little. He didn’t talk, he didn’t p

  • Hearts on Ice   Chapter 25: Her Again

The morning didn't start gently, it came with a bang…sharp and insistent. Viktor’s phone rang out over and over like it was fighting for its life. Not once, not twice…not even ten times. It continued over and over again. He stirred first, brows knitting together as the sound pierced through the quiet room. Lukas didn’t move at first, still half asleep, arm loosely around him.“…turn that shit off,” Lukas mumbled. But Viktor was already reaching for it. The moment he saw the screen, his expression changed and just like that, the sleep was gone completely.“Hello?”His voice was rough, still waking up, but the moment the person on the other end started talking…he sat up fully and quickly.“…what?!”A pause…then sharper—“What do you mean something happened?”Lukas opened his eyes slowly now, watching him worry, watching sweat form on his head. Something was terribly wrong.Viktor was already getting up, pacing slightly, one hand running through his hair.“No, no—it can't be happening. I
