I only wanted the scholarship. Then the letter arrived—stamped with a royal crest that was supposed to be extinct. Now the Crown Prince has his teeth in my throat, the underground king has already marked my wrist, and the Council’s rising star is watching like he already owns what’s left of me. They call me the Omega Prince. The Grand Master calls me a resource he will claim, breed, or erase. Three Alphas who refuse to let me go. One enemy who will burn the empire before he lets me walk free. One heat. One forbidden bloodline. And a future that was never mine to choose.

Chapter 1

The Crest

I kept my head down and walked straight toward the scholarship desk.

The administration hall smelled of polished wood, old paper, and the kind of expensive cologne that clung to people who never worried about money. Students moved around me in loose clusters, laughing too loudly, comparing class schedules, already claiming space like they belonged here. I didn’t. I only needed the packet, the room key, and a quiet exit before anyone looked too closely.

My scholarship forms listed a different last name. A safer one. I had practiced the signature until it looked natural. I had checked the suppressant dose twice that morning. Everything was supposed to be ordinary.

I was three steps from the counter when a man in a black suit stepped into my path.

“Leo Ashford,” he said.

My real name. Not the one on the forms.

I stopped. The noise of the hall dropped away under the sudden quiet in my ears. My fingers curled once at my side and then went still. I did not look around to see if anyone else had heard.

He was tall, older, expressionless. Silver hair cut close to the scalp. The pin on his lapel carried the Grand Master’s crest in polished metal. No one wore that pin unless they answered directly to the top of the empire.

“I’m here for the scholarship packet,” I said. My voice stayed level. I kept my shoulders relaxed and my eyes on his face instead of the pin.

“Not here,” he replied. He turned without waiting for agreement. “Follow me.”

I could have refused. I could have turned around, walked out of the building, and disappeared into the city before anyone else learned the name he had just spoken. The thought lasted less than a second. Drawing attention was the one thing I could not afford. Running would only make it worse.

I followed.

He led me past the main counter, down a side corridor that students were not supposed to use. The floor changed from open marble to darker wood. Two locked doors passed on the left. A third door at the end opened under his hand without a key. He stepped aside just enough for me to enter first.

The private office had no windows. One desk. Two chairs. A single lamp that threw a hard circle of light across the polished surface. The air was cooler here, almost sterile. The door clicked shut behind us with a soft, final sound.

He did not sit. He placed a single envelope on the table between us and rested his fingertips on the edge for a moment before drawing them back.

Dark wax. Thick, expensive paper. An embossed crest I had only ever seen in restricted history texts—the royal mark of a bloodline the empire claimed had been erased twenty years ago.

My fingers closed around the envelope before I could stop them. The wax was cold against my skin. The paper felt heavier than it should have. I did not open it. I did not need to. The crest alone was enough.

The aide watched me without speaking. His face gave nothing away. He stood with the same stillness as the furniture, waiting.

I kept my breathing even. I kept my shoulders loose. Inside my chest something cold and sharp had begun to turn, but I did not let it reach my face. I had spent years practicing this exact control. It was the only reason I was still free.

“What is this?” I asked. The words came out quieter than I intended.

“You already know,” he said.

I lifted my eyes to his. “I applied under a different name.”

“Yes,” he answered. “That is noted.”

Silence settled again. The lamp hummed faintly. Somewhere beyond the walls the ordinary noise of the university continued—students laughing, doors opening, the soft chime of the hour—but it felt distant, like it belonged to another building entirely.

I turned the envelope over once in my hands. No address. No sender. Only the crest pressed deep into the dark wax. My thumb brushed the edge of the seal. It would break easily if I pushed.

I did not push.

“The Grand Master does not send personal letters to scholarship students,” I said.

“You are not a scholarship student,” the aide replied. “Not anymore.”

The words landed with quiet precision. I felt the shift in the room as clearly as if the temperature had dropped. My grip on the envelope tightened once, then relaxed. Controlled. Always controlled.

“What does he want?” I asked.

“Your answer,” the aide said.

“To what?”

He did not smile. He did not frown. He simply looked at me the way people looked at documents that required a signature.

“The Grand Master is expecting your answer by sundown,” he said.

Then he walked to the door, opened it, and left without another word.

The latch clicked softly behind him.

I stood alone in the windowless office with the letter that should not have existed. The crest stared up at me from the dark wax, sharp and unmistakable. My fingers remained closed around the paper, steady, even as the cold understanding settled deeper.

Someone powerful already knew exactly who I was.

And sundown was only hours away.
