Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
The pain of acid burning through me pulled my mind back to the present. As soon as Danny finished speaking, Ruby gave him a shy smile, and they exchanged a look right in front of me.

The next second, Danny reached out and patted her head. "Once you finish covering this story, you'll be confirmed full-time."

Ruby's eyes lit up, but before she could say anything else, I stopped them. "So, you don't need me anymore? Should I resign now and leave you two to do it together?"

I wasn't going to just let it go this time. I didn't want to let them get away with this, and I definitely didn't want innocent people to die for this.

My bluntness turned the mood in the office heavier in a heartbeat.

Ruby's eyes turned red, just like a scolded child, making Danny yell at me immediately. "Watch your tongue, Janice! Ruby and I are just coworkers! I stepped in because I saw you picking on a newcomer. As your husband, I couldn't just stand by and do nothing! Instead of reflecting on yourself, you're even refusing to change for the better?!"

I couldn't help but smile coldly internally. Coworkers? It looked more like something else entirely to me. He was already fooling around, yet he still wanted to act like he was doing nothing wrong!

"No means no. This breaks company policy. An intern can't go to a scene without a senior reporter!" I said.

At the mention of company policy, Danny scoffed instead. "Are you trying to push me out, Janice? Unfortunately, as long as I'm your superior, you'll have to listen to my orders! Ruby is going, and that's final!"

He then took Ruby's hand and left.

I had expected Danny to use his authority to suppress me. What I didn't expect was for him to drive her there himself. He made it clear to everyone in the company that anyone who tried to stop her would be fired.

I tore off my badge and drove after them, but not before going to the security room.

When I arrived, Ruby was already talking with the firefighters. There was absolutely no guilt on her face as she treated their lives as though they were nothing!

"Alright. We'll start the evacuation right away. Thank you for the information." I ran over and managed to hear that line, and my anxiety overtook me. I didn't know how to stop all of this.

I ran toward them, but Danny stepped in front of me.

He glared at me and said, "What are you doing here, Janice? You wanted a senior reporter present, right? That's why I'm here. What else do you want?!"

Time was running out, so I tried to run past him nervously, but he grabbed my arm. "Stay right here! I'm not letting you delay Ruby!"

His tone was full of righteousness. If I weren't his wife, I probably would have even offered him a round of applause.

It was almost too late, and the lead firefighter had already entered the factory.

I shouted in horror, "Stop! There are explosive materials inside!"

Luckily, I was loud enough, and the firefighter at the rear heard me and immediately pulled the others back.

The heat from the flames fed my urgency, and I knew that if I were any slower, the people inside would die from the smoke or from the explosion caused by the explosive materials.

The team leader walked over, his expression stern. "What did you say? How do you know there are explosives?!"

Ruby stood there in her work attire while I was in casual clothes, so I knew she looked more credible.

Still, I didn't care anymore.

As my mind raced, I suddenly pointed at a woman kneeling nearby who was sobbing uncontrollably. "She knew about it! She said it just now!"

In my last life, she was one of the workers who worked in that factory. Her husband was also one of the men who had died in the explosion.

The "Ruby" who was still on the run sent me a photo.A ticket from Pineton City to Westerland.I smirked and sent back her file on her cosmetic surgery, along with a photo of her sitting in the departure lounge."Do you like the gift I prepared for you, old hag?" I asked with a smile. Before the fake Ruby could even look around to see where the voice was coming from, I walked straight up to her.She panicked, and the first thing out of her mouth was, "I only stole your man! Why are you so obsessed with me?!""I don't care about the trash you picked up, but the moment you tried to make me take the fall for you? You just won yourself a guarantee that I would never give up on hunting you down! You like Danny, right? I'll put you in the same prison as him!"She went stiff instantly.I stepped back with a pleasant smile as the police rushed in and arrested her once more.At the station, I dropped the file in front of Danny."Your taste is truly unique, going for a woman in her fif

Ruby thrashed on the floor, rolling back and forth. She tried to cover the places where the acid had corroded her skin, only to find that touching them made it hurt even more. Her whole body shook with pain.I gritted my teeth as I felt my eyes getting wet.Sandy handed me a tissue. "What, you still feel sorry for her?"Of course not. I was just so happy."No. These are tears of joy." I wiped my face and the tears that had rolled down my cheeks. For the first time since I came back, I smiled for real.It was pure chaos when Sandy and I were hustled out. Ruby and Danny were sent to the hospital. Ruby had shielded him from some of the acid, but it had still splashed into his eyes.I closed my eyes and leaned back into the car seat as Sandy spoke calmly. "Next step?"In my last life, Ruby had used her connections to stop me from getting treatment despite the pain and my cry for help. What right did they have to be treated this time?I tapped my phone, and the screen showed the la

Hell?I was the actual one who had crawled out from hell. The victims' families blocking my way saw me try to leave, and the crowd grew restless. A large man charged at me, shouting, "Give me back my son!"While the families were indeed pitiful, it did not mean they had the right to hurt me."Ah!"There was a hoarse scream, and a police officer had already stepped in, throwing the man to the ground with a shoulder throw, pinning him down.I gave Danny a sneer. "You think you're the only one with a backup plan?"I turned around and walked to the police station, asking them to release the full footage. This time, my video went straight to the top of the trending list. The story flipped. The netizens began to attack Danny and Ruby out of rage at being deceived. And this time, someone uncovered something even bigger. The outrage became even worse when "The Mayor’s Illegitimate Daughter" hit the top of the trending searches.Very quickly, a formal investigation began. Sandy even

"Ha... Hahaha!"Then, discussions about what was happening began. Those who weren't sure of the truth earlier started first."So, Danny and Ruby really are together. I heard she knew him back in university!""What a waste. It's quite sad for Janice, though. She has both looks and talents, but Danny picked someone with neither…"That was enough to break Ruby. She dropped onto the floor, clutching her head and sobbing. No one went to her except Danny."I'll send my resignation to your email later. I'll also hand the footage to the police. They can decide whether it's edited or not. I believe they can analyze it fairly! But… You've got one thing wrong. Ruby may not have talent, but she has the backing of someone influential. Her dad's last name is Thomas, too."I said that before leaving on purpose. Anyone curious would start digging into her background.I believed that it wouldn't take too long before Sandy and the whole city would know she existed.Upon quitting, I originally pl

"The security cameras are down? Perfect. I actually bought a new one a while ago and had it installed in the corner. Funny, isn't it? All of the footage from the past week is on my phone. As a senior, I believe I do have the right to set up a camera, don't I?"Now, Ruby. Do you still think I was the one who went to the scene and signed off on the assignment roster for you?" I said with a faint smile.Ruby and Danny froze.I still did not understand, though. Why would they do this? Ruby was only an intern…Bits of memory floated up. I remembered seeing a person called Grant Thomas standing at a distance during the trial in my last life. His appearance back then had surprised everyone. He was the mayor of this city, famous for his integrity. Because of that, many people had supported him when he ran for office. When the sulfuric acid came flying at me, he had instinctively reacted and pulled Ruby toward him. But…It was public knowledge that his daughter was Sandy Thomas.Ruby.

  • Hellfire's Wrath   Chapter 5

My eyes narrowed the moment I saw the name "Janice" on the page.Last time, Danny had pulled out the same document with the same signature on it. However, I knew I had never signed it despite the signature being an exact match with mine."So, the queen of the newsroom can't even admit when she's wrong?" Ruby cried almost genuinely, and our co-workers began to look at me doubtfully.Any doubt the boss still had vanished the second she started sobbing. Everyone couldn't help wanting to side with whoever looked weaker."Hello. We're here to investigate the false report regarding yesterday's fire." Two officers suddenly walked toward me. I still had the video of Ruby going to the fire on my phone. Even if they tried to pin the assignment on me, she could not escape making a false report.Ruby's face tightened with fear as Danny pointed at me and shouted, "Not only did you sign off on the assignment roster, but you also even made a false coverage on the scene?!"In my last life, the p
