Chapter 2 Just Sign the Papers

Autor: Joy Feast
The next day, Jesse came home with Gideon, and the two of them were holding hands.

"Anthony, we need to talk."

I looked up at her, and for the first time in days, a faint unease stirred in my chest. Jesse had never brought one of her lovers home before, let alone brought one straight to me.

"Gideon's grandpa is dying," she began. "His last wish is to see Gideon get married."

I frowned. "So?"

Jesse hesitated for a moment before finally saying, "I need you to divorce me."

For a second, the entire room seemed to fall silent.

'Divorce? Are you kidding me? I've put up with ten years of this marriage, and now she wants out when I'm only six days away from getting everything I've waited for? Seriously? Right before the finish line?'

When I didn't respond, something almost resembling guilt flickered across Jesse's face.

"It would only be for a month," she explained. "Once his grandpa passes peacefully, we'll get married again right away."

Right on cue, Gideon's eyes filled with tears.

"Anthony, please." He stepped toward me and actually began lowering himself to his knees. "According to the doctors, my grandpa only has a few days left."

I remained still, but my mind was already racing.

If Jesse died after we divorced, how much of the Knapp fortune would I lose? Worse, what if Gideon tried to fight my three kids for her estate?

No, I wasn't going to let that happen. For Anthony, for the kids, and for myself, I had to remain as Jesse's legal husband until the very end.

I met her gaze. "New Year's is less than a week away, and the whole family will be together. Do you really want everyone finding out that we suddenly divorced right before the holidays?"

I leaned back in my chair. "Let's wait until after New Year's. By then, the two of you can put on whatever show you want."

"No!" Gideon's voice cracked as fresh tears spilled down his cheeks. "My grandpa might not make it that long!"

This time, he really did drop to his knees.

He grabbed the leg of my pants and looked up at me tearfully. "Please, Anthony. He's the only family I have left. If he dies without seeing me get married, I'll never forgive myself. I don't even know how I'd keep going."

Jesse's expression softened immediately. She looked at him as though seeing him in pain physically hurt her.

Then, she turned back to me, and irritation began creeping into her voice. "Anthony, I'm asking you for one favor. What he's asking isn't unreasonable."

A bitter smile tugged at my lips.

"One favor?" I looked straight at her. "Jesse, I've been doing you favors for ten years. You've had forty-nine lovers, and not once have I screamed at you. Not once have I embarrassed you in public or told anyone what kind of wife you really are."

I paused before continuing, my voice growing colder. "I took care of this house, looked after your parents, and raised our three kids. Now, you want me to give up my place as your legal husband too?"

"It's just one month!" she snapped.

"No!" I stood up, rejecting her outright for the first time in years, leaving no room for negotiation. "You promised me something, Jesse. You told me that no matter what happened, I would always be your husband. You don't get to take that back now."

Jesse froze, and for a brief moment, she actually looked conflicted.

Then, Gideon covered his face and broke down.

"Forget it. Just forget it," he choked out, his shoulders trembling. "I'll go with Grandpa. Then, none of this will matter anymore..."

He tried to stand, but his knees suddenly gave way, sending him collapsing back onto the floor as his entire body trembled.

Jesse rushed forward immediately and pulled him into her arms.

By the time she looked at me again, whatever hesitation had been in her eyes was gone. Her expression had turned cold. "Anthony, I'm not asking for your permission. You've always done what I asked, and this time will be no different."

I let out a quiet scoff. Fine, she could do whatever she wanted.

As long as I did not sign anything, she'd have to take me to court. Only six days remained until New Year's Eve, and there was no way she could force a contested divorce that quickly.

By the time her lawyers get anywhere, she'd be dead.

I turned toward the door, only for Jesse to grab my wrist. "Where are you going?"

I glanced down at her hand before looking back at her. "I don't feel like watching the two of you anymore. I'm leaving."

A cold smile appeared on Jesse's face, the same smug expression she always wore whenever she thought she had figured me out.

"You think walking away means you can avoid the divorce?" Her grip tightened around my wrist. "Or were you planning to run straight to my parents and have them stop me?"

Before I could answer, she pulled me toward the door.

"The attorneys have the papers ready. We're going to the courthouse now," she told me, her tone leaving no room for argument. "We'll get everything finalized today."

I said, "I'm staying."The System remained silent for several seconds, as if giving me one final chance to reconsider. Then, its response appeared. "Choice confirmed. The connection to your original timeline has been closed. You will continue living in this world as Anthony Holmes."Another line followed. "All transferred lifespan will remain with you. Total acquired lifespan: forty-nine years."I was thirty-two.With another forty-nine years added to my life, I still had a long road ahead of me....Jesse's funeral was held three days later.A thin layer of snow covered the Knapp family's cemetery, dusting the holly trees and gravestones in white. Hundreds of people came to pay their respects—business executives, government officials, reporters, and countless others dressed in black.I stood at the front with the three children beside me.My oldest son was nine. He didn't cry, but he held my hand so tightly that his knuckles turned pale.My second son, seven, kept his head

I asked the technicians to bring their equipment into the living room.Only Dominic, Haleigh, the family attorney, an independent notary, and I were present; no reporters, no extended family members, and no outsiders. The three children were already asleep upstairs with their nanny. Once everything was connected, the screen flickered to life. The same hospital corridor from ten years ago appeared before us, washed in the harsh white glow of fluorescent lights. Even through the screen, I could almost imagine the sterile smell of disinfectant.A younger Jesse sat on the floor, leaning against the wall. Her shirt was darkened with Anthony's blood at the front. Her hands lay loosely on her knees, but her fingers continued to shake. The phone in her pocket kept vibrating, but she ignored it.Above the emergency room doors, the red light remained on.The corridor was almost silent except for the distant hum of medical equipment and Jesse's uneven breathing. This time, there was no

Stefan's retaliation came quickly. He sent photographs of my ledger to the Knapp family group chat.…By the next morning, seven or eight senior members of the extended family had arrived at the Knapp Residence.Officially, they had come to pay their respects, yet not one of them went to Jesse's memorial first.Patrick Knapp, Dominic's second uncle and the oldest member of the group, took the main seat in the living room and struck his cane once against the floor."Anthony, Jesse is gone now." His expression was stern. "There are certain matters we need to clear up."I stood at the foot of the staircase and looked at them calmly. "Such as?"The old man placed several photographs on the coffee table. They were clear shots of my leather-bound ledger, page after page spread out for everyone to see.Dexter Walsh, Eliot Yates, Riley Lott, Gideon Bender—each name listed with Jesse's gifts and their affairs.Patrick looked up at me. "You kept records of every man involved with your

Stefan sat at the head of the boardroom table, looking perfectly composed.Twelve directors sat in total, and seven of them had already sided with him.…Meanwhile, Dominic sat at the opposite end of the table, his expression grim.He had stepped away from the company's daily operations years ago and now served only as honorary chairman. He still carried considerable influence, but he no longer had the authority to overturn a board decision on his own.Stefan was just about to call for a vote when the conference-room doors opened.I walked in.The Knapp family's chief counsel followed behind me, along with an independent trust officer."Anthony?" Stefan frowned the moment he saw us. "This is a board meeting. You have no standing to be here."I ignored him and walked straight toward the presentation screen. After plugging in a flash drive, I pulled up a certified copy of Jesse's trust documents—the same trust Gideon had tried to destroy. Then, I turned to the final section.

I opened the recovered messages and began reading. The earliest dated back eight months."Gideon, I put together everything Jesse likes in a man. Check your email."Another message followed."Someone from her past has been haunting her. A man who died years ago. Make yourself look and act enough like him, and she'll take the bait."I scrolled further down the conversation until I reached a series of messages sent three months earlier."Timing matters if you want her to marry you. Wait until she's completely dependent on you before you make your move.""Use your grandfather. Guilt will work better than pressure."Then came the messages from a month ago."The surrogate story is your last card. If the Knapps believe an embryo has already been implanted, you can drag the inheritance fight out for months.""That should give me enough time to handle things at the board level." The final message had been sent the day after Jesse died."Things are moving faster than expected. Your

Jesse's recovered memory footage was never released to the public.Instead, they released a written summary of the evidence, jointly verified by the police and Reverie Technologies. That alone was enough, and public opinion shifted almost overnight. The article accusing me of plotting Jesse's death received so much backlash that the publisher eventually turned off the comments. Before long, two new topics had taken over social media, namely, "Jesse Knapp drove her husband to death ten years ago" and "Dexter Walsh's texts leaked."I didn't give a single interview. I didn't need to.Grant handled everything for me.He gathered screenshots of the messages Dexter had sent Anthony ten years ago, arranged them into a timeline, and published the entire exchange. The first message had been sent two weeks after Jesse and Dexter started seeing each other. It read, "Anthony, Jesse told me you two have been over for a long time.
