Chapter 4

Author: Year on Year
Suddenly, there was silence on the other end of the phone. It lasted for exactly five seconds.

"What did you say?"

"It's her former classmate Scott Yeager's baby. She wants to do right by him, so she’s divorcing me."

Jenny's voice rose by an octave. "Pregnant? With someone else's baby?"

"Yes."

"But... but..." Jenny struggled to finish her sentence.

"So you don't have to worry about whether we'll have a child anymore. You'll have a grandkid soon." I finished speaking and hung up.

I put the phone in my pocket and went out.

Felix had agreed to meet me at a barbecue restaurant. When he arrived, I had already drunk three bottles of beer.

"Go on, tell me what happened." Felix sat down and started chewing on a beef brisket.

"Christine cheated. She's pregnant. Not my baby."

Felix's mouth froze in mid-air, and the beef almost fell out. "Damn."

He put down the beef, his expression changing from shock to anger. "That bitch! You worked day and night for three years to afford a house, yet she ended up getting knocked up by someone else?"

"Yeah."

"What are you planning to do?"

"Divorce. She'll leave with nothing."

Felix froze slightly and then laughed. "Leave with nothing? She agreed?"

"She did."

Felix cursed again, "Damn. Is she out of her mind? Giving up over eight million dollars for some random guy?"

"She said she has to take responsibility for him."

"Take responsibility? Take what responsibility? If that guy truly loved her, would he let her walk away from her marriage with nothing? Has this woman been kicked in the head?"

Felix was right, but I did not reply and simply opened another bottle of beer.

"Are you alright?" Felix looked at me, his expression turning serious.

"What could be wrong with me?" I looked at the golden liquid in my glass. "I'm free."

"Really?"

"Really." I took a big gulp. "I worked hard for this house for three years. Now, I understand. Who cares about a house? Without a home, even the biggest house is empty."

"Then what will you do next?"

"Take the money, move to another city, and start over."

Felix was silent for a moment before raising his glass. "Okay, I support you. Here, cheers."

We drank until 3:00 pm.

When I got home, I received a message on my phone from Christine. It was a document—a divorce agreement. I opened it and glanced at it. She really meant what she said. All her assets were clearly listed, and they all belonged to me.

I signed electronically at the bottom of the document. Clean and decisive.

Then I hit Send.

I sent Christine a message: [I signed it.]

She replied instantly: [Received. I'll come at 8:00 pm to move the rest of the stuff.]

I checked the time. It was 7:40 pm.

Twenty minutes left.

I put my phone away, leaned back in the cab, and closed my eyes.

When we were almost at the entrance to my apartment complex, I asked the driver to pull over. It was about a ten-minute walk from the complex entrance to my home. When I got to my door, I saw someone standing there.

It was a man wearing a dark gray cashmere coat. He heard footsteps and turned around. I recognized him—Scott.

He saw me and smiled. His smile was impeccable, so impeccable that it seemed rehearsed countless times.

"Jared?" he called my name, his tone carrying a carefully restrained air of superiority.

"Mm," I responded flatly and went to open the door.

"I'm Scott Yeager." He stood behind me and said softly.

"I know." I opened the door and walked inside.

Scott followed me inside. "I'm here to apologize."

"No need to apologize." I changed into my slippers and sat down in the living room.

Scott followed me and sat on the couch. "I know you hate me."

He looked at me, his eyes reddening.

"I don't hate you." I leaned back on the couch, my tone the same as when I spoke to Christine.

"What happened between Christine and me... was just an accident." He lowered his head, his voice choked with emotion. "She was drunk and kept calling your name that day. I took her back to her hotel, and she mistook me for you..."

"Is that so?" I played along with a smile.

"I know you won't believe anything I say, but I'm sincerely here to apologize." Scott looked up, his eyes brimming with tears.

"I know I ruined your marriage, and I'm sorry. But the child Christine's carrying is innocent. I know you suffered a lot to buy a house. I understand your pain." He said he understood, but there was smugness in his eyes.

I did not reply.

"Actually..." Scott bit his lip, as if hesitating whether to speak.

"Actually what?" I asked cooperatively.

"Actually, I've known Christine since college. She pursued me for two years, but I never agreed." His voice carried a hint of wistful reminiscence.

"She was broke back then, a girl from a small town who had nothing. I couldn't stake my future on her." He said it with self-righteousness, as if being materialistic was something to be proud of.

"But now, it's different. She has her own studio, a property, a car, and a successful career. A successful woman should have a man worthy of her."

He looked at me, his pity undisguised. "Jared, don't blame me for being blunt. You've been with Christine for five years, yet you can't even afford a house. Do you think a marriage like this can last?"

I laughed. It turned out Christine had not told him she had agreed to leave the marriage with nothing.

"Perhaps it's because I now truly understand how important money is. Before, I didn't have a sense of urgency because Christine was there to support me. Now that it's just me, I have to be responsible for myself." I sat next to Felix and spoke seriously.Felix looked at me with complex emotions in his eyes. "Jared, you've become so mature.""It might be because of pressure." I chuckled. "People grow up. Some people become adults at 18, while others don't grow up until 30. I guess I'm the latter.""But at least you've grown up." Felix patted my shoulder. "Much better than those who will never grow up."On the first night of moving into the new house, I had trouble sleeping. The big house I used to live in was quiet too, but it was a kind of empty, nerve-racking quiet. This small house's silence was reassuring and comfortable. It felt like being wrapped in something, very safe.I lay on the bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Hence, I got up and walked to the yard. The nigh

Felix grunted. "By the way, I've found you a house. It’s in a great neighborhood, with a private 430-square-foot yard. Fully renovated and move-in ready. Wanna check it out tomorrow?""Okay.""Then get some rest early. I'll pick you up tomorrow.""Okay."After hanging up, I went to the balcony. The next day, Felix came to pick me up to view the house. The house was in an old neighborhood, but the neighborhood had a nice environment and good landscaping. There was plenty of space between the buildings too. It was a first-floor two-bedroom with a living room, about 900 square feet. It was not huge, but cozy. The most important thing was that there was a 430-square-foot yard. The yard was paved with anti-corrosion wood flooring, with an osmanthus tree planted in the corner, and there was also a small flower bed beside it, with some flowers that I could not name."This is the one," I said.Felix and the real estate agent looked at me at the same time."You don't wanna take a look

"No," I refused flatly. "That apartment is mine now. She agreed to give it to me. According to the law, no one can take them."There was a long silence on the other end of the line."Jared, how could you be so heartless?" Jenny's tone changed, becoming icy. "You were married to Christine, and now, you're just gonna watch her end up on the streets?"What I said was the truth. "It was her own decision to give up everything. I never asked her to. Besides, doesn't she still have Scott? Isn't Scott going to be a father? She can go live with Scott."Jenny suddenly cursed. "Scott? That kept man! Now that he knows Christine has no money, his attitude has changed. The other day when I went to see Christine, I happened to run into him. The way he talked to me was as if I owed him a fortune. He also said that he might not really want this baby, and he would have to wait and see how Christine behaves."She became more and more agitated. "What does he mean by 'seeing how she behaves'? The baby

I was finally enraged by that sentence. The anger that had been pent up inside me finally burst.I took a step forward and stared into her eyes. "You wanted to be a mother, so you got knocked up by another man. Did you ever remember that you were my wife when you slept with him? When you were sleeping with him, did you ever think that I was waiting for you to come home and give you a surprise? "When you spent the night with him, did you ever think that I was staying awake just to wait for you to come home?"My voice began to tremble, not because of sadness but anger. "I'm telling you, Christine, you don't deserve to be anyone's wife because you're irresponsible. You're just a selfish, weak, and irresponsible woman."Christine was speechless as I spoke. Her eyes were red as her lips trembled. She looked like a fish that had been thrown onto the shore."I... I didn't mean it..." She forced out these words with difficulty."I know you didn't mean it." I looked into her eyes. "You j

Felix made me laugh."What are you laughing at? I'm serious!" Felix shot me a glare without pausing what he was doing. "I'm telling you, Jared, women like her need to be taught a lesson. The better you treat her, the less she takes you seriously. You should make sure she leaves with nothing and teach her what it means to lose everything while gaining nothing!"I laughed, but then my eyes became sore.Felix saw my red eyes and stopped what he was doing. He came over and hugged me.We spent over an hour clearing Christine's things."What's next?" Felix dusted off his hands and asked me."Put these things in garbage bags and throw them into the trash can downstairs.""Throwing them in the trash is too easy on her." Felix shook his head. "I have a better idea.""What idea?""Pack up these things first. I'll make a phone call."Felix mysteriously walked to the balcony with his phone and talked for a few minutes. When he came back, he had a bright smile. "It's done.""What's been

I said calmly, "A woman with nothing but a child."The laughter on the other end of the line stopped abruptly."Wait." Felix's voice turned serious. "You mean that boy toy doesn't know Christine agreed to leave the marriage with nothing?""No.""So he thinks he'll soon be living in a big house, driving a nice car, and acting like a boss?""Yeah.""Gosh." Felix took a deep breath. "Jared, you're so cruel.""I didn't make her do anything." I leaned against the headboard, my voice soft. "It was all her own choice.""So you're planning to watch her destroy herself?""I don't have time for her." I paused. "I just don't want anything to do with them anymore."There was a long silence on the other end of the line."Are you all right?" Felix's tone softened."I'm fine. Really," I answered."You're bluffing. I'm coming right now. I'm skipping work today. Wait at home. I'll be there in 20 minutes."The call ended.I looked at my phone screen; it was Felix's chat interface.I had
