Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
Rather than clinging to some faint hope and suffering through the pain, I'd rather end it all cleanly.

At the hospital, the doctor tried to talk me out of it, again and again, asking me to reconsider. I didn't argue. I just signed my name on the organ donation form, firm and final.

Seeing that nothing would change my mind, the doctor stood, patted my shoulder gently, sighed, and walked away.

While I waited at the billing counter to settle my treatment costs, a video on my social feed caught my eye and cut deep.

Two nights earlier, the department had gathered at The Milton Hotel to celebrate Jocelyn cracking a major case. I'd missed it. My condition had flared up that day.

The video had been filmed during the dinner. A few drinks in, someone had started egging Jocelyn and Brian Castor on. "Go on, give her a hug!"

Brian looked bashful and waved his hands. "I couldn't possibly. Jocelyn belongs to James. How could I hug another man's girl?"

He was doing it on purpose.

If there was one thing Jocelyn couldn't stand, it was being treated like someone else's property.

Ever since my family and the Nicols family had settled our engagement, Jocelyn had never once acknowledged it. Add to that her vow not to marry until the cold case was solved, and to anyone on the outside, our relationship looked like a done deal.

In reality, it was nothing but a one-sided fantasy I'd built for myself.

Jocelyn's expression soured, just as I knew it would. But with her coworkers watching, she only said, flat and noncommittal, "Even if he were here, I can hug whoever I want."

Then she stood and walked straight into Brian's open arms.

"Now that's our boss, bold as ever!"

Watching their bodies pressed together, my mind drifted back to the day I first met Brian.

Three years earlier, he'd graduated at the top of his class and joined the department. From the moment he arrived, rumors about him and Jocelyn never stopped.

I always pretended not to notice, ignoring the looks people gave me, whether they were mocking or pitying.

I remembered one night, playing truth or dare, when Jocelyn lost for the first time ever. Everyone jumped at the chance and pressed her with questions.

"Come on, Detective Nicols, you've never once felt something for Brian?"

"Don't be shy. Even one second of feeling something counts!"

Sitting in the corner of the private room, I clenched my fists where no one could see and couldn't stop myself from glancing at Jocelyn.

She looked back at me. In that moment, our eyes met, and I saw something soften in hers.

But when she finally spoke, her voice was as flat as ever, and the answer she gave was exactly what I wanted to hear. "Never."

The knot in my chest finally loosened. I didn't let myself dig any deeper into the disappointment I heard underneath her words.

After the game ended, Jocelyn and I went back to our apartment together. She locked herself in the study like she'd lost her mind and never came out.

For the next three days, she didn't sleep or eat.

By the end, I was so worried about her health that I broke the door down myself and pulled her out, barely conscious.

That day, her face drained of color, she gripped my hand so hard it hurt and said, "James, I can't solve this case."

Looking at her defeated, bitter eyes, I actually believed she wanted to marry me.

I squeezed her hand back right away and said gently, "It's all right. We've made it this far together, haven't we? As long as I get to stay by your side, that's enough for me."

After that, we both silently agreed never to bring up the case again.

Whenever the Nicols family pushed for answers, I was always the first to step in and defend her. "As long as Jocelyn's willing to be with me, we don't need a piece of paper to prove it."

Little by little, her family stopped pressing the issue.

I thought I could go on like that forever, playing at being together without ever actually being together. Reality hit me hard instead.

I turned off my phone and walked out of the hospital, numb.

In five days, I'd be lying on an operating table, ready for euthanasia.

Jocelyn shot to her feet, furious, and picked the flowers back up, blowing the dirt and gravel off them.Brian snatched them out of her hands again and smashed them into the ground."Brian, have you lost your mind?""That's right, I've lost it. But you're the one being ridiculous! We were one step away from being the most envied couple in all of Lento City, and you threw it all away!"Brian kept advancing as he spoke, forcing Jocelyn to back away."I spent years carefully building this. I was this close to marrying into the Nicols name, and you had to go and ruin everything at the worst possible moment."Jocelyn had nowhere left to retreat until her back pressed against my headstone. She couldn't process what she was hearing. This was the same junior colleague who used to call her "Jocelyn" with such fake warmth. He was a completely different person now.As if he'd read her mind, Brian sneered. "Why are you so shocked? Did you really think there was a second idiot out there lik

"Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to be here today. But I'm not here to celebrate. I'm here to apologize to every one of you."Two years ago, I already had the key evidence for this cold case in my hands. I chose not to report it to the department right away, and because of that, the suspect went on to kill two more women using the exact same method..."The room, once loud with chatter, went silent except for the constant clicking of camera shutters.Jocelyn looked braced for the worst. Her face stayed completely blank as she finished her statement, then bowed deeply toward the cameras. That same afternoon, the department announced their decision on Jocelyn's case.Because she'd deliberately concealed evidence, a serious violation of the department's professional standards, they stripped her of her detective title. She'd never be allowed to work in criminal investigation again for the rest of her life. That was how fast Lento City's celebrated heroine, its

"This has to be one of his sick jokes! He promised he'd stay by my side for the rest of my life!"Jocelyn seemed to be grasping at anything she could, shoving past the nurse trying to stop her and reaching to pull back the white sheet covering my face.A crowd started gathering in the hallway. It wasn't until security arrived, alerted by the commotion, and physically held her back that the scene finally ended. The doctor impatiently threw my medical file at her."Look at this. Look at it carefully. Mr. Dempsey was diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer at the start of last year. A whole year, and you never once noticed he was sick?"Some of Jocelyn's composure came back. She stared blankly at the file in her hands, flipping through page after page.None of it actually registered. Her mind was just static. It wasn't until she got home that things started to come into focus. She thought of how I'd never touched a single supplement before, and then suddenly started carrying aro

Thanks to the anesthesia, the euthanasia wasn't nearly as painful as I'd imagined. I felt my body go loose and soft, felt my consciousness peel away from it, bit by bit.Just as I thought everything was over, my eyes opened again.I realized my soul had drifted to the police department, straight to Jocelyn's side. Her face was dark with worry. Beside her, Brian complained, "Tch! Of all times to bother you. James knows exactly how important this case is to you."Jocelyn shot him an irritated glance and yanked her hand away, then called me again. This time, the nurse who'd just brought me the phone answered instead."James Dempsey? He just finished the euthanasia procedure. He's being transferred to the organ donation room now.""What did you just say?" Jocelyn shot up from her seat. "Who's dead?"Only after the nurse repeated herself did Jocelyn finally react. She ignored Brian entirely and bolted out of the office."Wait for me! I'll drive you. You're in no state to be behind

"What?" Jocelyn spun around, stunned. "When did you find out?""Does it matter?" I ignored the flicker of panic crossing her eyes. "You already have a direction to go on. Just finish the investigation.""So you're forcing me into marrying you now? I can't believe it. Brian was right about you. You really are selfish and vile."She hadn't changed one bit.If I were really that selfish, would I have ever spent all this time devoted to her, running myself ragged for her sake?"I think the person who's actually vile is you. You've had evidence in your hands this whole time that could clear those victims' names, and you sat on it instead of solving their case and letting their killer walk free."Jocelyn, where's your professional integrity? Where's the ambition you used to talk about?"She probably never expected me to fight back like that. It left her speechless for a long moment before she finally managed, "What's gotten into you today? Did you take the wrong medication?"Or is it

I was drifting in and out of sleep when an insistent phone ringing dragged me awake. The second I picked up, Jocelyn's voice came through, sharp and rattled in a way I'd never heard from her before. "Get over to Brian's parents' place right now!""What's going on?"Brian took the phone, his voice shaking. "James, I think someone's been watching my parents' house. It has to be one of the suspects from an old case who slipped through the net. I hate to ask this of you, but I'm genuinely afraid something might happen to them."Being harassed or targeted for revenge came with the job when you worked for the department. But even knowing how dangerous a situation like this could be, the two of them still wanted me to handle it alone. My throat tightened. I forced the words out. "This needs to go through the department. I have to go."Jocelyn snatched the phone back, her voice turning hard. "What could you possibly have going on this late at night? For ten years, all you've done i
