ARIA

I was not shocked when Rowan kicked me awake the next morning.

“Get up and go into the house before the neighbors see the kind of mess that you are.” He snapped, barely giving me a second look as he left for the office.

I couldn't move. I was shaking and weak and a stabbing pain kept biting my sides. It seemed as though someone had removed my organs and poured ice into me.

I managed to crawl inside and find my phone. I called my best friend, Talia. “Please come. I feel like I will die from the cold.”

She came and drove me to the hospital hurriedly. I fainted from shock before we reached the hospital.

When my eyes opened again, Talia was beside me on the bed, holding my hand earnestly. She gasped in relief. “Thank God you're awake, I really thought you'd finally died.”

I groaned as I sat up. Was death not even preferable to this existence?

“Where's Rowan?” I asked, seeing that I was connected by wires to at least three machines.

Talia shook her head angrily. “How can you even ask about that ruthless man? He hates you, why can't you see it?!” She yelled at me. “Leave him!”

I couldn't leave him. I had given years of my life to him and I had nothing to show for it, not even a child.

The doctor informed me that I had contracted pneumonia from being out in the cold all night, but he prescribed some pain killers and meds.

I left the hospital with Talia begging me to stay. I refused to, instead I took the painkillers to dull the pain.

When I got home, the doors were locked and I realized I didn't have my key.

Hesitant, I used my phone to call Rowan. I called him five times, but he never picked up even though I confirmed from his secretary that he was in the office.

I finally convinced her to take the call to him though he had warned me never to try that, but I needed to go into the house.

“Rowan? Please can you come home? I am just back from the hospital and it seems I have lost my key.”

Rowan sneered. “Then why didn't you just die there? Don't bother asking for the key, I changed all the locks. You think you can disappear for two days and pretend you were at the hospital?”

I was stunned and emotionally affected.

So I was in a coma for two days, but instead of worrying, he changed the locks?

My chest tightened at the callousness of the man I called my husband. If he had even called Talia to check, he would have confirmed I had fainted but he didn't care enough to.

I ended the call, my face going blank and emotionless. I went over to my father's house.

The butler, Mr. Partridge opened the door. I heard the sound of laughter even before I was completely inside.

“I always knew she was a tramp! You mean she disappeared from home for two days?” I heard my step-mother laugh.

“Yes. Rowan just informed me now. I can't believe I have such a loose daughter!” My father said, anger twisting his tone of voice.

Immediately I stepped in, their voices cut off.

My father stood, scoffing at the sight of me. “I can't believe you're so shameless to show your face here!” He said.

I looked between the two of them, knowing it was a hopeless cause trying to explain where I had been the last two days.

I just needed a place to rest until Rowan returned from work so I could go home.

“So you are not only a whore, but you're also deaf and mute now, right?” My step-mother snapped at me.

“I have been at the hospital since I got pneumonia from Rowan locking me outside.” I informed them.

“You're a liar. Why would Rowan lock you outside? We all know Rowan would not hurt a fly. See how he treats Zara!” My father roared, angry at me for daring to tarnish the image of his son-in-law.

Why did I bother coming here? My father has always hated me since my mother died in an explosion on a private island.

Now he stood like he couldn’t bear to look at me. I’d seen that look before every time he remembered her.

He loved my mother, but she had cheated on him with her lover on that island so he transferred all his hate to me, and I’ve been paying the price since then.

I left their house. It was better to be caught under the sun and rain than staying there.

I should have gone to Talia’s house but she had already done enough by staying with me at the hospital.

My phone rang. It was my boss. “Where are you, Aria? We have a client and we need your expertise!”

“I am sick, Josh.”

“No, we cannot afford to lose this deal. Please come in today.” He begged me.

I was the best videographer at the company so I hurried over even though my sides were still exploding with pain.

I got to the meeting, and met the client. She was planning her wedding and she wanted us to handle the videos and photos.

When I showed her samples of what it would look like, she happily signed the deal worth almost two thousand dollars.

The event would be a destination wedding so we were booked for the entire week.

My boss breathed a sigh of relief. “Can you believe we almost lost that client? Thank God you arrived when you did.”

I stared at him listlessly, wondering how I could be so important at work, and yet my husband and family never saw any use in me.

I stayed to work on drafting a plan for the event with Josh as he asked how I was.

I told him I was fine, though I could barely keep from wincing in pain.

“I'll go home and rest now, Josh.” I informed him before leaving that evening around nine. I had stayed that late because I hoped Rowan would be back before I got home.

My phone vibrated in my pocket with a message. I found a text from Talia.

“Please come, Aria. I am being molested!”

ARIAI was hesitant about going to the office the next day, but I went anyway. Rowan had backed off for a bit, but Darion informed me he had gone cake tasting with Zara for their wedding.Maybe now that he was really into planning the wedding with Zara, he would leave my children and I alone. At the office, Mara was already waiting anxiously for me at the door. She handed me a coffee and smiled nervously. “I hope Mr. Finnick was not too angry about last time?” She asked hopefully. I walked past her, taking the coffee she was offering. “How many times have I warned you against gossiping, Mara?” I asked her instead. “Miss Stanton?” She asked, standing in front of my desk.I sighed. “No, Mr. Finnick was not angry. But don't repeat that.” No, Caspian had been rather pleased to hear her gossiping about him. I grimaced into the coffee as I thought of last night. Dmitri was an asshole, but I wasn't even too angry at him. Caspian had shocked me with his reaction to Mr. Dmitri putting

CASPIANMaybe I had underestimated the bastard, but not anymore. Dmitri was gazing up at me with as much veiled anger as I could read in Aria’s eyes.“Do you understand, Ivan?” I snapped. He swallowed and nodded. I let him go and he bounced against his chair.“Let's go, Aria.” I said, waiting until she moved before walking behind her until we left the restaurant. It was only when we stepped outside that I realized I was shaking.I opened Aria’s door and slammed it shut when she entered the car. We sat inside the car together for a few minutes while I got my temper under control.“Did I just lose you the contract?” Aria asked softly, looking up at me with soft eyes. I exhaled. “What did you say?” Was she blaming herself for Ivan’s uncultured behavior? Aria looked down, twirling her fingers in her lap. “I'm sure Mr. Dmitri is angry. Which means he might not sign the contract.” I shook my head. What the fuck was she going on about? “Look at me.” I said. She kept her head down, sh

ARIAAt home, I offered to pay Meredith for overtime. She would have to stay with the kids for three hours at least, while I went to dinner with Mr. Dmitri and Caspian.“I'll be back before eleven so you can head home. Thank you so much.” I said as I hurried upstairs to dress up. Rowan called my phone about twenty times as I was preparing but I didn't even bother answering. Fuck him! That guy was too arrogant. Why else would he even believe that I would call his number? Much less ask him to stay the night with my children and me? I texted Caspian to get the location for the dinner. His text came a few minutes later.“I'm picking you up, wear something sexy.” I stared at the text, my body trembling. Was he being serious right now? This was a business dinner, I wasn't dressing up for him to feast his eyes on my body! That was what I told myself, but when I went to my closet, I picked the red dress. It was a long, dinner dress with a corset bodice and a demure slit to the knee. Th

ARIAA hot pink blush stained my skin again as I covered my face with my palm, banging my head on the desk.“You weren't meant to hear that. I'm sorry, Caspian.”He sat opposite my desk, crossing his legs as his eyes laughed at me. “Oh, but it was rather interesting to hear her. I didn't know your affection for me was so obvious that others had picked up on it.” I blushed even more, shaking my head as he burst out laughing. His laugh was hale and hearty and I opened my eyes to watch him. His eyes lit up, dancing as he watched me watch him. His head tipped to the right. My stomach fluttered with butterflies. I liked his laughter. I liked the sound, and I liked how it relaxed his face and made him look younger.“You look really handsome. You should do that more often.” I said, staring straight into his eyes.“Do what?” He shifted restlessly. “Laugh. You should laugh more often. Your eyes light up and your face relaxes.” “Maybe I'll be happier with you in my bed, under me. What do y

ARIAI felt my heart harden as I listened to her concerned voice.“Camilla?” I said, breaking into her sobs.“Aria? Are you on the way? Please come now. Hurry.” She kept repeating.“Camilla!” I snapped. When she became quiet, I told her plainly. “I don't care if your daughter hangs herself from the roof. I just don't care. Please leave me alone.” I heard the stunned silence from her end, but I didn't care. The last time I saw Zara, she tried to kill my daughter. Why on earth would I do anything to help a woman like that? “You're truly heartless, Aria. You have no grace and I curse the day I met you.”I chuckled. “I could also curse the day you married my father, Camilla. But that would be too much trouble. You're nothing to me, I don't care if you live or die and that applies to your daughter too. Call the cops if she really needs help.” I hissed.I ended the call, my chest rising and falling fast as I returned to my cooking. I wasn't taking myself back to that house for anything,

ARIA“What do you mean?” I questioned, forcing the words out of my tight throat.“I mean that you'll be mine. Mine and mine alone because I don't share, Aria.” How could he sound so good and yet so bad at the same time.I gulped, pushing my chair back. “I think I should go. It's getting late, and the children will be tired by now.” He shrugged, standing too. “You can't keep running, Aria. I won't let you.” He dropped us off at home and during the entire ride, he kept the kids engaged. When we got home, after parking, he went to the car’s boot and came back with bags which he handed to me.“These are for the kids. New toys and whatever else Analide thought kids would like.” Caspian said. My eyes widened. “When did you even have the time to do this?” I gasped.“Analide did it this time. You can thank her when you see her.” With those words, he bent and hugged the kids. “Be good to mommy, okay?”“Yes, Prince Caspian.” Nylah said shyly. “Prince?” I asked, laughing softly.“Yes, beca
