ARIA

I was not shocked when Rowan kicked me awake the next morning.

“Get up and go into the house before the neighbors see the kind of mess that you are.” He snapped, barely giving me a second look as he left for the office.

I couldn't move. I was shaking and weak and a stabbing pain kept biting my sides. It seemed as though someone had removed my organs and poured ice into me.

I managed to crawl inside and find my phone. I called my best friend, Talia. “Please come. I feel like I will die from the cold.”

She came and drove me to the hospital hurriedly. I fainted from shock before we reached the hospital.

When my eyes opened again, Talia was beside me on the bed, holding my hand earnestly. She gasped in relief. “Thank God you're awake, I really thought you'd finally died.”

I groaned as I sat up. Was death not even preferable to this existence?

“Where's Rowan?” I asked, seeing that I was connected by wires to at least three machines.

Talia shook her head angrily. “How can you even ask about that ruthless man? He hates you, why can't you see it?!” She yelled at me. “Leave him!”

I couldn't leave him. I had given years of my life to him and I had nothing to show for it, not even a child.

The doctor informed me that I had contracted pneumonia from being out in the cold all night, but he prescribed some pain killers and meds.

I left the hospital with Talia begging me to stay. I refused to, instead I took the painkillers to dull the pain.

When I got home, the doors were locked and I realized I didn't have my key.

Hesitant, I used my phone to call Rowan. I called him five times, but he never picked up even though I confirmed from his secretary that he was in the office.

I finally convinced her to take the call to him though he had warned me never to try that, but I needed to go into the house.

“Rowan? Please can you come home? I am just back from the hospital and it seems I have lost my key.”

Rowan sneered. “Then why didn't you just die there? Don't bother asking for the key, I changed all the locks. You think you can disappear for two days and pretend you were at the hospital?”

I was stunned and emotionally affected.

So I was in a coma for two days, but instead of worrying, he changed the locks?

My chest tightened at the callousness of the man I called my husband. If he had even called Talia to check, he would have confirmed I had fainted but he didn't care enough to.

I ended the call, my face going blank and emotionless. I went over to my father's house.

The butler, Mr. Partridge opened the door. I heard the sound of laughter even before I was completely inside.

“I always knew she was a tramp! You mean she disappeared from home for two days?” I heard my step-mother laugh.

“Yes. Rowan just informed me now. I can't believe I have such a loose daughter!” My father said, anger twisting his tone of voice.

Immediately I stepped in, their voices cut off.

My father stood, scoffing at the sight of me. “I can't believe you're so shameless to show your face here!” He said.

I looked between the two of them, knowing it was a hopeless cause trying to explain where I had been the last two days.

I just needed a place to rest until Rowan returned from work so I could go home.

“So you are not only a whore, but you're also deaf and mute now, right?” My step-mother snapped at me.

“I have been at the hospital since I got pneumonia from Rowan locking me outside.” I informed them.

“You're a liar. Why would Rowan lock you outside? We all know Rowan would not hurt a fly. See how he treats Zara!” My father roared, angry at me for daring to tarnish the image of his son-in-law.

Why did I bother coming here? My father has always hated me since my mother died in an explosion on a private island.

Now he stood like he couldn’t bear to look at me. I’d seen that look before every time he remembered her.

He loved my mother, but she had cheated on him with her lover on that island so he transferred all his hate to me, and I’ve been paying the price since then.

I left their house. It was better to be caught under the sun and rain than staying there.

I should have gone to Talia’s house but she had already done enough by staying with me at the hospital.

My phone rang. It was my boss. “Where are you, Aria? We have a client and we need your expertise!”

“I am sick, Josh.”

“No, we cannot afford to lose this deal. Please come in today.” He begged me.

I was the best videographer at the company so I hurried over even though my sides were still exploding with pain.

I got to the meeting, and met the client. She was planning her wedding and she wanted us to handle the videos and photos.

When I showed her samples of what it would look like, she happily signed the deal worth almost two thousand dollars.

The event would be a destination wedding so we were booked for the entire week.

My boss breathed a sigh of relief. “Can you believe we almost lost that client? Thank God you arrived when you did.”

I stared at him listlessly, wondering how I could be so important at work, and yet my husband and family never saw any use in me.

I stayed to work on drafting a plan for the event with Josh as he asked how I was.

I told him I was fine, though I could barely keep from wincing in pain.

“I'll go home and rest now, Josh.” I informed him before leaving that evening around nine. I had stayed that late because I hoped Rowan would be back before I got home.

My phone vibrated in my pocket with a message. I found a text from Talia.

“Please come, Aria. I am being molested!”

ARIAA dry laugh escaped my lips. “Wow, Ivan, couldn't even stay dead for one month?” I asked.Ivan Dmitri was alive, standing there like the devil had found his way out of hell. On his face was a smug grin, and I could tell he'd accurately read the surprise on my face. Standing beside him, was Rowan.“Aria? Did you miss me?” Ivan’s eyes ran over my body, and his smirk widened. “I see you're looking even better.” Ivan slid into the booth across from me like he owned the place, while Rowan followed, sitting beside me, boxing me in against the wall like he owned me. My body locked up, but I moved as far away as the leather seat allowed, placing my bag between us as a wall. Xander wasn’t coming. It was obvious that the lunch had been a setup.“I take it Mr. Lexington isn’t joining us?” My tone was flat, but I felt my pulse hammering in my throat.Ivan laughed, but Rowan answered, his arm lifting and curling across the back of the booth, his musky scent hitting my nose like poison. “D

  • Her Billionaire Ex-husband's Regret    158. JUST DIE, ZARA

ARIA “Mara? Please clear my schedule for the day.” Mara sat opposite me, tapping into her tablet. She stopped. “Um, Mr Lexington called earlier, asking me to schedule time for lunch with him.” Xander? I hadn't seen him since the other day in Caspian’s office. Why hadn't he called me? “Okay, an hour at lunch. Nothing else for the rest of the day.” I said. She locked the door behind her and I turned on my laptop, keeping track of the news. While we drove over, I'd texted the same reporter I used the last time, with the audio of Zara saying I should get over the assault. I didn't have long to wait. About an hour later, the notifications started dropping in. The outrage was expected, and deserved. “Zara Stanton? I always knew there was something not right about her!” “Wow, she has a sister?” “It was years ago, get over it!” I scrolled through most of the comments, but there was no satisfaction in it. I really didn't care much about Zara, I just wished she would stay the

CASPIAN Was that footsteps? My eyes opened but I stayed still, feeling Aria’s heartbeat echo mine. She was lying right on top of me. We'd fallen asleep that way after mind-blowing sex against her bedroom door. She'd agreed for me to spend the night at her place. I smiled, then heard that sound again and the smile leaked off my face. Was there someone in her house? I slowly slid Aria off my stomach, soothing her when she grumbled in her sleep. When she closed her eyes again, I got out of the bed, and walked to the door, pulling my shirt on. Opening the door as quietly as I could, I slipped into the hallway, stilled and listened. The night was silent and cold, and for a second, I believed it was nothing. I was turning to head back into the room when the hairs on the back of my neck raised at once. Someone was in the house. I knew it because the footsteps in the hallway headed towards me. Turning around, I hid in the dark and waited. A few seconds later, a shadow stopped ju

  • Her Billionaire Ex-husband's Regret    156. ONE NIGHT IN MY HOUSE

ARIA “We don't know who sent those. We didn't pick any fingerprints off it.” Oh. I sat back, a sigh of relief escaping my lips. I could deal with these one at a time. I sat back, closed my eyes, and tried to shove it all away. “Aria,” I heard Caspian’s voice as if from afar. Opening my eyes, I saw that we were parked in front of my building. I sat up, rubbing off the sleep from my eyes. I'd drifted off during the drive. Caspian helped me climb out of the car. I walked with him to the door, and inside the house. Immediately I did, I saw Reed on the couch, pushing a toy truck between him and Lark. Michelle had Nylah on her lap, making her hair into cute little braids. I stopped at the door. “Oh. I didn't know you two were here.” Nylah’s eyes fastened on Caspian and she hurried over, almost jumping into his arms. He held her, twirling her in a circle as always before he smacked a kiss on the corner of her lip. “Hello, Princess.” Reed was watching the both of them with a d

  • Her Billionaire Ex-husband's Regret    155. A LOT FOR ONE DAY!

ARIA I got tired of waiting for Caspian, and left his office. I was much calmer. Analide was in her office and came around to talk to me, but I shook my head, not in the mood to talk. She placed her fingers on my arm. “Caspian said I was to inform him if you tried to leave.” I shrugged. “You can, but I'm leaving. I'm tired of waiting.” With each passing minute, my thoughts only became wilder. After dwelling on it for the last hour, I didn't really believe it was Zara or Rowan. Maybe Vivienne, but definitely not Zara or Rowan. They were too dumb for that. Or maybe it was even Talia, after all she had been standing right outside my office door. And how could she tell such a lie to Caspian? I shook my head, and walked away from Analide as she called Caspian. I was tempted to return to my office, but I went straight to the parking lot. I should have waited for Caspian. Talia was standing beside his car, looking impatient as hell. I walked over to her with rage. “How dare

  • Her Billionaire Ex-husband's Regret    154. WEIGHT OF THE PAST

CASPIAN Talia frowned up at Duke, then hid her face under my arm. I shook my head at him. “Don't.” I turned to walk away, my arm around her shoulder, then stopped. “The flowers are on the table, along with the note. I'll be back in a few minutes.” Talia clutched my shirt as we walked away. I heard Duke open the door and close it behind him. I was barely aware of my surroundings as I walked Talia to the parking lot. “Where's your car?” She tightened her fingers against my skin, clawing at me. Her tears rapidly came pouring out again. “I don't want to be alone right now.” “Talia, I'm at work. I'll be with you immediately I'm done.” Her cries became even louder and she wouldn't move. “I can't be alone right now, Caspian. This is your fault, I shouldn't have to bear it alone!” I pulled in a breath of air and prayed for patience to deal with her. “Fine, sit in my car for a moment. I'll be back.” I told her. I walked her over to my car, settled her in, and walked away, hurrying up
