"Maryanne, how was your time off," Jessica inquires, stacking some of her paperwork on her desk. She tries to smile, but the stress and pain of the last week has almost been unbearable and the idea of explaining it all has a headache forming. She even experienced a nightmare last night that Riley got out of her bedroom and fell down the flights of stairs. She shudders even imagining it now."It was, um, eventful," she says softly. She avoids eye contact as she unzips her jacket and places it around her chair."Did you party too hard," another librarian chuckles from across the room.Maryanne looks up, cocking her brow, "Not really, Shelley."There is a soft silence spanning throughout the library as Maryanne sits down and sighs, staring at her desk. She didn't have a chance to talk to Max any further on the subject of Riley. He locked himself in his study, telling Geneva that he was working and that no one was to bother him. She got the hint that it was mainly because of her. H
As Maryanne says goodbye to her coworkers and runs to her warm car, she can't help but to feel anxious. Her chest is tight, her throat closing up as she imagines all of the things that could go wrong back at the house."Why did I let him stay home with her," she grumbles aloud, gripping the steering wheel tighter. As her mind goes off on a tangent, Maryanne's chest is pulled. Her legs ache from walking up and down the aisles and standing on the ladder to reach books that were higher up. All she wanted was to relax and sit with Max and Riley as they enjoy the evening. She blinks the thoughts away, "That's odd." Her brow twitches at the new emotions running through her.Maryanne finds herself pulling up to Max's mansion quickly, her thoughts clearing. She grabs her purse and enters into the bitter cold New York air. Biting a shiver, she runs into the front entryway, her eyes scanning for any signs of life.No sounds drift toward her as she stands quietly. There is an eerie silence
Waking up the next day is a nightmare. Riley had not wanted to go to sleep. She continuously got out of bed and played with her toys. She laughed and screamed, waking Maryanne several times during the night. With Max still not home, she is forced to do everything for the child. Now, with three consecutive hours of sleep, Maryanne is trying to wake Riley up to get ready. Although Geneva is gone, there is a drop-in daycare three blocks over that usually has room for a few extra children a day."Come on Riley, I have to get to work." Drying her hair with her towel, Maryanne wanders over to Riley's closet and sifts through her clothes. "Alright, let's see here."She pulls out a pink long sleeve shirt and a pair of blue jeans. "Do you want your hair braided today?""Yes!" Riley jumps on top of the bed before bouncing off the edge. She doesn't stick her landing though, and falls on her butt, giggling."Okay, come on, let's hurry. I can't be late for work."Riley climbs back up on the
"Hold still, Riley," Maryanne sighs, trying to unbuckle the flailing child."No, play 'n snow." She squeaks as she is freed from her confines and tries to jump out of the car."No, now just wait. Let me put your jacket back on." This second step is more frustrating than the first as Riley continues to defy Maryanne by keeping her arms stuck to her sides."Now," Maryanne leans back for a second, huffing. Heat takes over her face, frustration taking hold of her body. "If you want to play outside, then you need to put your jacket back on, okay?"Riley's small cheeks puff out as she frowns, but reluctantly follows direction. "Thank you."Once the jacket is on, Maryanne makes sure that Riley's gloves and hat are all the way on before she allows the girl to exit the car and run right into the pile of snow across the driveway. She laughs as Riley picks up the clumps of the flakes and throws them in the air, giggling."Good afternoon, Miss Maryanne."Geneva exits the mansion, holding
As the morning light fills the mansion, Maryanne slowly makes her way down the steps. The house is bustling, and she can hear the lighthearted conversation between Jeff and Geneva echoing through the air. The smell of bacon reaches her nose and her stomach growls. Holding on to her abdomen, Maryanne makes her way down into the dining room, where Riley sits at the large table, Geneva placing eggs and bacon in front of her.Max stands to the side, his shoulders broad, his thick jaw clenched. His hair, usually slicked back, is down across his forehead. He turns toward her and she moves her gaze to his neck, so she does not have to look him in the eye."Good morning," Max nods softly.Maryanne only smiles back in greeting and pulls the ends of her cardigan closer before folding her arms."Please, sit down." Geneva ushers Maryanne to one of the chairs as several plates of food are carried in by Jeff. He is young, his long hair tied back in a bun.Max sits near Maryanne at the opposite
Maryanne dips further into the water, embarrassment causing her body to go numb. She should be yelling at him to get out, to look away. Maryanne holds any words at bay, not sure of what to say."Uh, I'm sorry," Max pivots away, his knuckles turning white as he grips the door knob tightly. Red tints his ears and he clenches his jaw. "I was trying to find you. I—no sorry—this is stupid, but Geneva left and won't be back until the morning."Maryanne wants to ask where she has gone, probably back home, but the fear that is now taking over Max's features has her overlooking that topic."What is it?""Riley is acting strange. I think she might be getting sick."It takes a moment for Maryanne to understand what he has said, as his face is turned away while he speaks."What, does she have a fever?" Fear begins to pound in her head."I'm not sure.""Well go get a thermometer," she commands, standing up abruptly as her mind races with thoughts of Riley being sick.Dizziness comes over h
Maryanne was not expecting to end up taking care of not only Riley, but also Max, on her weekend off. Although he has been adamant that he was not sick, Max quickly turned for the worse as the fever took over and the nausea began to build. Luckily Riley's stomach was not so active and she remained in bed, sleeping."Are you done," Maryanne calls through the closed door of Max's bathroom. He doesn't so much answer as grunt his reply. She opens the door cautiously, not sure what she would see. Breathing a sigh of relief as she notices he has made himself decent, she moves to his side as he wavers above the toilet."Come on," she places his arm around her shoulder. "Who would've thought that the great and powerful Max Ryder could be taken down by the common cold." She tries to laugh but the effort of making sure he doesn't fall is too great and she groans as he leans to the side."Miss, do you need help," Geneva rushes into the room, but hesitates, not knowing what to do."No, i
"Stop," Maryanne whispers, trying to control her emotions. She gently tugs on her hand, but Max refuses to release it.Luckily, he is too out of it to notice the shift in her mood. Why is he acting so kind and intimate? This is not like him."I only want to thank you," he rasps out. He opens his eyes once more, turning toward Maryanne. "I enjoyed spending time with you and Riley at the park. I hope we can do more together from now on."His grip tightens on her hand. She holds back the emotions that wage war against her reasoning. She cannot fall back into the trap that is Max Ryder. He has hurt her too much to be completely forgiven so easily. Instead, Maryanne takes a deep breath in and says, "As long as you don't get sick every time."Max tries to laugh through his coughs, but ends up wincing, "I'll try not to."Maryanne smiles down at him, her hand burning from the contact. She pats his arm, her heart racing. "Just try to rest, I am going to check on Riley.""Okay," he smi
