The reply came back within seconds.**Unknown Number:** *The café on Larkin Street. Ten tomorrow morning. Come alone.*Sora sat with her thumb hovering over the screen for a long time, the blue light of it the only thing in the dark bedroom. Come alone. Every instinct she had, every year of learning to protect herself the hard way, told her that was a terrible idea. But there was something else underneath the feaChapter 36 — "Melvin's Leverage"She almost didn't answer his call.Melvin's name sat on her screen for three full rings before she picked up, and even then, she wasn't sure what made her fingers move."Sora." His voice had that careful, measured warmth he'd been using since the hospital, the one she still didn't fully trust. "I heard about the consultancy.""Word travels fast.""It's a small circle of people who actually matter in this city," he said. "Things get back to me whether I go looking for them or not."She pressed her fingers against her temple, exhausted in a way that went deeper than lack of sleep. "If you're calling to gloat, Melvin, I really don't have it in me today.""I'm not calling to gloat." A pause, and something in his tone shifted, softer, careful in a different way now. "I'm calling because I think I can help you. And because I think you should hear me out before you say no."---
Chapter 35 — "Confrontation at the Mansion"The reply came back within seconds.**Unknown Number:** *The café on Larkin Street. Ten tomorrow morning. Come alone.*Sora sat with her thumb hovering over the screen for a long time, the blue light of it the only thing in the dark bedroom. Come alone. Every instinct she had, every year of learning to protect herself the hard way, told her that was a terrible idea. But there was something else underneath the fear. A small, stubborn thing that had grown in her over these last months, the same thing that had let her sign a lease on an office with her own name on the door. She didn't need someone else to hold her hand through every hard conversation anymore. She typed back one word.**Sora:** *Fine.*Then she set the phone face-down on the nightstand and lay in the dark a long time before sleep finally took her.---She didn't get the chance to go.
Chapter 34 — "Consultancy Under Siege"Two more clients dropped her before lunch.Sora sat at her small desk in the office she'd rented three months ago, an office she'd been proud of in a way she hadn't let herself be proud of anything in years, and watched a second cancellation email land in her inbox while she was still trying to process the first.**Re: Marketing Partnership — Withdrawal**She read the subject line twice before she made herself open it.*Dear Ms. Robbins, after careful consideration, we've decided to pursue our marketing needs through a different partner. We wish you the best in your future endeavors.*No reason. No specifics. Just the same bloodless corporate language as the one from yesterday. Her hands were shaking slightly when she picked up her phone.---"Miranda." Her voice came out tighter than she meant it to. "Are you free right now.""Sora, what's wrong."
# Chapter 33 — "Justin Won't Say"Justin Harrison found out about the client before Sora did.He was in his father's study when the call came through, standing near the window with a drink he wasn't really drinking, mostly just holding it because it gave his hands something to do. Victor was on the phone with someone, voice low and satisfied in a way that made Justin's skin prickle even before he understood what he was hearing."....yes. Good. And make sure it traces back to nothing." A pause. "No, not nothing traceable to us. Nothing traceable to *me.* There's a difference, and I'd like you to remember it."He hung up. Set the phone down on the desk with the kind of precision that meant he wanted Justin to notice how controlled he was being."That was quick," Justin said, before he could stop himself.Victor looked up. "What was.""Whatever that was.""Business," Victor said. "You wouldn't find it interesting."
Chapter 32 — "Boardroom Blood"The vote passed at 4:47 in the afternoon, and Sora found out about it from a text message that just said **we won**, with nothing else. No exclamation point. No details. Just two words from a man who never wasted them. She stared at her phone for a long moment before she texted back.**Won what? Are you okay?**Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.**Come to the penthouse tonight. I'll explain everything.**That was worse than no answer at all.---By the time she got there, the sun had already dropped behind the skyline, turning the windows of Jack's penthouse into sheets of orange glass. He was standing at the bar when she walked in, tie loosened, sleeves rolled to the elbow, a glass of something amber in his hand that he hadn't touched."Hey," she said.He turned. And for a second .... just a second .... she saw something in his face before he smoot
**Chapter 31 — "Old Ghosts"**The woman was waiting outside Sora's building when she came home from the office, standing under the awning like she'd been there long enough to memorize the pattern of the sidewalk.Sora almost walked past her. Almost. But something about the way the woman straightened when she saw her, deliberate and unhurried, made her stop."Sora Robbins.""Do I know you?""Not yet." The woman's smile was thin, careful, the kind of smile that gave away nothing. "Nephis Lukeman. I think you'll want to hear what I have to say before you decide whether that's a problem."Sora's grip tightened on her bag. "I don't know you, and I don't know why you're standing outside my building.""Because what I have to tell you isn't something I wanted to say over the phone, or in an email that could be forwarded, or anywhere with cameras that might make its way into whatever mess your life has become since the accident."
