fractured Reflection

Chapter 1: Fractured Reflections

The soft glow of the restaurant’s chandeliers did little to warm the chill that had settled deep in Sora Robbins’ chest. She sat across from Melvin at their usual corner table, her generous curves tucked into a simple black dress that she had chosen carefully, hoping tonight might be different. Hoping he might look at her the way he used to — with affection instead of disdain.

But hope was a dangerous thing in their marriage.

“Really, Sora?” Melvin’s voice carried across the table, loud enough for the couple beside them to glance over. “You’re going to eat all of that? At this rate, I’ll need to buy you a new wardrobe every month.” He gestured at her plate with his fork, his handsome face twisted in that familiar mix of amusement and disgust. “Look at you. Taking up two seats’ worth of space and still ordering pasta like it’s your last meal.”

The woman at the next table stifled a laugh. Her partner smirked into his wine glass.

Sora’s fork paused halfway to her mouth. Heat flooded her cheeks, the same burning shame that had become her constant companion these past six years. She lowered her eyes to the tablecloth, fingers tightening around the silverware. “I’m not that hungry anymore,” she said softly, pushing the plate away. Her voice was steady — she had learned to keep it that way. Tears only encouraged him.

Melvin leaned back, satisfied. “Good. At least you’re learning.” He reached across the table and patted her hand like one might pat a dog that finally obeyed. “You know I only say these things because I care, right? Someone has to keep you in check.”

Sora forced a small smile, the one that never reached her eyes. In public, Melvin was her greatest tormentor. In private… he was something else entirely. The man who still pulled her into bed at night, who groaned her name like a prayer while his hands roamed her soft, full body. It was the cruelest contradiction — being desired and despised by the same person.

As they left the restaurant, Melvin’s hand gripped her arm possessively, guiding her through the crowd as if she were an accessory he was slightly embarrassed by. The cool night air hit her face, but it did nothing to cool the humiliation still simmering under her skin.

In the car, the silence was heavy. Sora stared out the window at the passing city lights, her thick thighs pressed together, one hand resting protectively over the soft curve of her belly.

“You embarrassed me tonight,” she finally whispered.

Melvin chuckled, one hand on the steering wheel. “Embarrassed you? Baby, I’m just being honest. The world sees what I see. A beautiful face wasted on a body that… well.” He shrugged. “You used to take care of yourself better.”

The rest of the drive passed in silence. When they reached their modest but comfortable home, Melvin didn’t waste time. As soon as the door closed, he pushed her against the wall, his mouth hot on her neck.

“Melvin, I’m tired—” she started.

“Shh.” His hands were already sliding under her dress, gripping the generous flesh of her hips. “You know you want this. You always do.” His voice dropped to that low tone that still affected her despite everything. “My soft, willing wife.”

Sora closed her eyes as he took her right there in the hallway — hard, urgent, and selfish. Her body responded even as her heart ached. When he finished with a groan, he kissed her forehead almost tenderly.

“That’s my girl,” he murmured, zipping up his pants. “Clean up and get some rest. I have an important meeting tomorrow.”

He disappeared into the bedroom, leaving her leaning against the wall, his release slowly trickling down her thigh. Sora stared at her reflection in the hallway mirror. The woman looking back had lovely dark wavy hair, full lips, warm brown skin, and curves that spoke of softness and abundance. Yet all she saw were the flaws Melvin pointed out daily.

*Why do I stay?* she wondered for the thousandth time. *Because I promised forever. Because I still hope the man I married will come back.*

She sighed and began cleaning herself up, the weight of exhaustion settling into her bones.

---

The next morning at Blackwood Corporation, Sora tried to lose herself in her work as senior marketing assistant. The towering glass building represented both opportunity and another source of quiet tension.

“Miss Robbins.”

The deep, authoritative voice made her look up sharply. Jack Blackwood stood at her desk, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit that accentuated his broad shoulders. At thirty-five, he was the youngest self-made billionaire in the city, known for his cold precision and ruthless business tactics. Yet when he looked at her, there was something else in his dark eyes — something warmer. Almost protective.

“Yes, Mr. Blackwood?” Sora straightened, conscious of how her blouse stretched across her full chest.

He placed a folder on her desk, his fingers brushing hers deliberately. The touch lingered a second longer than professional. “These campaign proposals need your personal touch. Stay late if necessary. I value your perspective, Sora. More than you know.”

There was a gentleness beneath the command that surprised her. For months now, Jack had been like this — subtle compliments, quiet support during stressful meetings, and these lingering moments that made her stomach flutter with both nerves and something dangerously close to hope.

“Thank you, sir,” she said softly. “I’ll have them ready.”

He nodded, but before leaving, he added quietly, “If you ever need to talk… about anything… my door is always open.”

Sora watched him walk away, her heart beating a little faster. For the first time in a long while, someone saw her as more than just her size or her husband’s wife.

---

That evening, Sora made her usual stop at the Harrison family mansion. Miranda, her best friend since college, greeted her with a tight hug at the grand entrance.

“You look drained,” Miranda said, pulling back to study her face. “Another bad night with Melvin?”

Sora nodded, forcing a smile. “Same old story.”

They had barely settled in the elegant living room when Justin’s voice cut through the air like a whip.

“Look who decided to grace us with her presence again. The walking buffet.” Justin leaned against the doorway, arms crossed, his sharp features twisted in mockery. “Careful, Sora. The furniture might break under all that weight.”

“Justin!” Miranda snapped.

George, seated in his wheelchair near the window, turned his head. His eyes met Sora’s with quiet intensity. “Leave her alone, Justin. She doesn’t need your bullshit today.”

Justin laughed. “Defending the chubby best friend again? How noble. Tell me, Sora — does Melvin still fuck you after he calls you a whale in public? Or do you just lie there and take it like a good little doormat?”

Sora’s throat tightened, but she lifted her chin. “Why does it matter to you, Justin? Does tearing me down make you feel bigger?”

For a split second, something raw flickered in Justin’s eyes — surprise, maybe even respect — before the smirk returned. George wheeled closer, his broad frame solid and reassuring. “You don’t have to answer him,” George said gently. “You’re always welcome here. Always.”

His kindness, quiet and steady, touched something deep inside Sora. In a world that constantly reminded her of her flaws, George looked at her like she was enough.

Her phone rang. Melvin.

She stepped away to answer.

“Where are you?” he demanded.

“At Miranda’s.”

“Good. I’m on my way to the lawyer’s office. Divorce papers are ready. I’m done, Sora. Done pretending I can keep carrying you — literally and figuratively.”

The words hit like a physical blow. “Melvin… please. We can still fix this.”

“There’s nothing left to fix. You’ve become an embarrassment.” He hung up.

Sora stood frozen, phone in hand, tears slipping silently down her cheeks. When she turned back, three pairs of eyes were on her.

“He’s filing for divorce,” she whispered.

The room erupted into reactions, but it was George’s steady gaze and Miranda’s comforting arms that kept her grounded. Yet even as pain consumed her, a small, traitorous part of her felt the faintest spark of relief.

Outside, on a rain-slicked highway, Melvin gripped the divorce papers tightly. His phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number. He glanced down.

A blinding flash of headlights. The screech of tires. The sickening crunch of metal.

And then… nothing.
