Chapter 5

Author: Sweetie Moore
Elara said, "Too bad. I'm not interested in taking you back. Soren is the twins' father now. Although… if you're willing to get down on your knees and apologize to us, maybe I'll let the kids call you Dad. One of them is yours, after all."

I stared at her. Had she always been this full of herself?

"Don't flatter yourself. I wasn't following you. We happened to run into each other. I'm in a hurry, so if you don't mind, get out of my way."

I stepped around them, but Soren moved in front of me before I could leave. "A hurry? Surely you're not meeting someone? I saw you the other morning when I was picking up breakfast for Elara. You came out of your hotel with some woman. The two of you looked pretty cozy..."

He deliberately left the rest unsaid. How typical of Soren. He'd give Elara just enough to work with, then let her imagination do the rest.

Soren hadn't offered a shred of proof, but Elara believed him anyway. Her face changed instantly.

"So that's why you've been ignoring me. That's why you were suddenly so desperate for a divorce. You've been seeing someone else this whole time! How could you do this to me? To your own child?"

Before I could answer, she started hitting me, shouting over anything I tried to say.

Then my phone rang. It was the immigration office calling.

I had barely answered when Elara snatched the phone out of my hand.

"So you're the woman he's been sleeping with?" she snapped into the phone. "Calling him in broad daylight now? Have you no shame?"

There was a stunned silence on the other end of the line.

"Ma'am, I think there's been a misunderstanding. I'm calling from the immigration office regarding Mr. Vane's application.

"He needs to come in and provide an additional document today. Please let him know there's a deadline. If he misses it, we won't be able to process his application in time."

Elara froze. "What immigration?"

The person on the phone sounded even more confused. "You weren't aware? Mr. Vane submitted his application to move abroad ten days ago."

The call ended. Elara turned to me, stunned. "You're leaving the country? And you didn't think to tell me?"

A bitter laugh escaped me. "Since when have you ever believed anything I told you? Now move. I have paperwork to file."

Instead, Elara grabbed my wrist. "No. You're not leaving. You lied to me, Callum. You said I was the only woman you'd ever love. You promised! And now you're just going to leave me behind and disappear?"

That was rich.

"You really want to talk about broken promises? You broke yours first. Now let me go."

Elara didn't let go. If anything, her grip tightened. Then her face suddenly went pale. "My stomach… something's wrong."

A moment later, she started bleeding.

Soren panicked. He shoved me aside, swept Elara into his arms, and headed for the exit. "Elara, stay with me. I'm taking you to the hospital."

But Elara reached for me again, catching hold of my sleeve and refusing to let go. "Callum, you're coming too. If you leave now, I swear I'm not going anywhere. I don't care what happens to me."

I wasn't about to risk a medical emergency just to prove a point. So, against my better judgment, I went with them to the hospital.

Elara was rushed in for treatment at the hospital. The moment she came around, she grabbed the doctor's arm. "My babies… Are they okay? Both of them?"

Soren visibly tensed. "Elara, don't worry about that right now. You're in good hands. I'm sure the babies are fine."

The doctor frowned. "Babies? There's only one fetus."

Elara went completely still. "What? No. That can't be right. I'm carrying twins."

I said, "I'm not Callum Vane. My name is Farrow Vane."Elara stared at me for a moment. Then, before I could stop her, she yanked up the hem of my shirt. Her eyes immediately landed on the scar at my waist and filled with tears. "No. You're Callum. You got that scar when you donated your kidney to me. You can change your name all you want, but you can't change that. So that's why I couldn't find you. You changed your name."Cal, you knew I was looking for you. You knew how badly I wanted to find you. How could you just disappear like that?"She was loud enough that people passing by had started to stop and stare. From the looks on their faces, most of them had already decided we were a couple in the middle of some messy breakup. Then Elara reached into her pocket. She pulled out a braided bracelet woven from several bright colors and placed it in my hand."Do you remember this? We made these when we first got together."I stared at the bracelet. "I threw this away.""I know."

My phone wouldn't stop buzzing the entire ride to the airport.Elara had called more times than I cared to count, and 99 unread messages were waiting for me."Cal, where are you going? Please, just tell me."I know I messed up. I'll do anything you want, anything at all. Just don't leave me."Where are you? I'll come to you. Please."I didn't answer a single one. Eventually, I'd had enough and switched my phone off.At the airport, I cleared security, made my way to the gate, and boarded my flight.By the time Elara came racing into the terminal, it was too late. My plane was already in the air."Cal! Why couldn't you just wait for me? How could you do this to me?" From up above, everything on the ground grew smaller. So did Elara, until finally, she disappeared from view. The moment my flight touched down in Mersya, I turned my phone back on. The screen immediately flooded with messages from Elara."Cal, where did you go? Please, just tell me where you are."Do you have a

Soren haughtily said, "You agreed to the procedure, remember? And now you want to act like none of this was your fault? Don't stand there pretending you were some devoted mother. If you cared that much, you would've protected your baby when it mattered."Cruel as it was, he wasn't entirely wrong. Elara didn't love our child or me nearly as much as she'd claimed.Maybe that was exactly why his words hit so hard. She threw herself at him, and within seconds, the two of them were fighting.I'd seen enough. Soren had been exposed, and I'd gotten the justice I'd come for. There was nothing left for me here. Besides, I was running out of time to get my paperwork sorted. I took a breath, turned around, and walked away. The moment Elara realized I was leaving, she broke free from Soren and hurried after me. By the time she caught up, she was breathless, her hair falling loose around her face.I'd always known Elara to be perfectly put together. I'd never seen her look this much of a mess

"Do you really hate me that much, Callum?" Soren choked out. "Fine. If you want me gone so badly, maybe everyone would be better off without me!"He suddenly lunged toward the wall, but Elara caught him before he could do anything."Soren, stop!" Her eyes were red as she held on to him. "I believe you, okay? You don't have to prove anything. Please, just don't do this."Then she rounded on me. "Is this what you wanted, Callum? Are you seriously not going to stop until you've destroyed him?"I didn't even raise my voice. "Interesting. All I suggested was another examination, and suddenly you're making a scene. You're awfully desperate to avoid those tests, Soren. Got something to hide?"The crowd was starting to have doubts of their own."Wait, he does seem awfully worked up over a simple test.""Exactly. If he's telling the truth, why not just get checked and shut everyone up?""You don't think he actually faked the whole thing, do you?"The mood shifted fast. Soon, the same p

As if on cue, Soren clutched his chest and let out a couple of weak coughs, looking every inch the fragile, dying man.The moment he brought up his cancer, Elara's anger crumbled. She pulled him into her arms, her fury replaced by concern. "Don't talk like that. You're not dying. I won't let you. I'm not angry anymore, okay? Just... take care of yourself. You promised you'd be here when our baby is born, and I'm holding you to that."Soren wrapped his arms around her in return. "I knew you'd forgive me."The two of them gazed at each other like I wasn't even in the room. And there I stood, watching them cling to each other after everything that had happened.I couldn't help but laugh at myself. So that was all our baby's life was worth to Elara? She knew exactly what Soren had done, and she'd forgiven him anyway. What was I supposed to be, then? Just another prop in whatever twisted game the two of them were playing?Still nestled in Elara's arms, Soren shot me a smug look. Th

I said, "No. Absolutely not."Elara stared at me, confusion flashing across her face. "What are you talking about? Who killed anyone?"I shot Soren a furious look and pointed straight at him. "Him. Soren knew exactly what would happen. He knew the embryo transfer meant we'd lose one baby to save the other, and he went through with it anyway. Our baby is dead because of him."For just a second, panic flickered across Soren's face. Then it was gone. His eyes reddened, and he bit his lip, slipping effortlessly back into the role of the innocent victim."Callum, I know you're grieving. You're angry, and I understand that. I really do. But that doesn't give you the right to accuse me of something like this."Elara immediately stepped between us, shielding Soren behind her. "He's right, Callum. If you're going to accuse him of killing someone, where's your proof? Because without proof, all you're doing is throwing around accusations."Behind her, Soren looked almost smug. He clearly th
