8. Old Flames and New Shadows.
Lucien arrived at Loop Club that evening, hoping the whiskey would drown the storm still clawing at his chest. Inside their special VIP booth, Damien and Adrian were already waiting for him.
"You're finally here" Damien said from the sofa where he was sprawled.
"Yes" Lucien answered and sat down. The club wasn't busy today, so, there voices were at the normal volume.
Lucien's gaze flicked to Adrian who barely looked up as his thumbs flew across his screen, his jaw locked in irritation. Lucien looked at Damien.
Damien only shrugged. "Has been like that since this evening"
Lucien nodded and settled down. He picked a bottle of whiskey that was lying in the ice bucket and open it. He poured himself a glass and began sipping from it. His eyes were deep. Damien came and sat next to him.
"You good man?" He asked, giving him a slight nudge.
"I hope I am" Lucien replied and sipped from his glass again.
Damien chuckled. "Family drama again? The marriage thing?" He reached for the bottle and poured himself a glass. He took in a mouthful.
"No...far from that" he said. He lowered his gaze to the honey-colored liquid in his glass, but all he saw was the image of her, black-clad and untouchable. He heaved a sigh and swagged the drink down his throat.
"Okay" Damien said. He didn't probe again and just sat there, drinking silently.
"You won't ask me?" Lucien asked after a while.
"I already asked. I don't want to press too much" Damien replied.
Lucien nodded. He lowered his glass to the table and poured himself another drink. "It's Dahlia" he said, his voice now hoarse.
Damien froze mid-drink. He collected himself after a millisecond passed. "You sure it's her?"
"What did I just hear?" Adrian finally tore his eyes from his phone, looking up at the two guys. "Dahlia?"
"I thought you were busy?" Damien rolled his eyes.
"Yes. But, I can't miss such sweet gossip" he grinned, flinging his phone to another couch. He scooted over, sitting on the table.
Damien clicked his tongue. "What a gossip monger".
Adrian didn't mind and just shrugged. He looked at Lucien intently, eyes gleaming with the hunger of someone who lived for other people's secrets.
"She's the one. You remember the competitor I mentioned yesterday?"
The duo nodded.
"She's the one" Lucien murmured.
"Shit!" Adrian shrieked, slapping his thigh.
"There's going to be drama" Damien murmured, amusement dripping from his tongue.
"What about Sasha? Has she seen her?" Adrian asked, eyes wide.
"Yes. It was a coincidence. They met in front of the meeting room" Lucien said. He replayed everything that had gone down today, from the moment she walked in, to the moment she left.
"How's she?" Adrian asked. "Like, everything?"
Lucien looked at him.
"Hot" Damien said before Lucien could say anything. The two men looked at him.
While Adrian's eyes shone with glee, Lucien's own turned few shades darker.
"You sly fox" Adrian giggled, "so you guys secretly met up?"
Damien didn't say anything and just sipped his drink. He could feel Lucien's gaze on him but he didn't care.
"Why did you see her?" Lucien asked, voice low.
Damien looked at him. "I didn't see her, but, I guess that's how she should be now".
Lucien didn't say more. He picked his drink and gulped it down.
"Then, does that mean, you were thinking about her?" Adrian probed.
Lucien's hand tightened around the glass. But he remained calm.
Damien noticed and smiled. "Maybe. Dahlia is a beautiful woman, inside out but some people fail to see that". His tone was both suggestive and provocative.
"Will you pursue her?" Adrian asked.
Lucien looked at Damien.
"She's single now. It's possible".
"Aren't you both quite the talkatives? I came here to have a drink. Why's she the only damn topic of tonight?" Lucien's voice was low and dangerous, the kind that silenced rooms. Adrian pouted and stood from the table, searching for the phone he abandoned.
Damien smirked as he sipped from his drink slowly, relishing how his friend was squirming in his seat. 'At last, the quiet cage has been rattled'.
10. Corroding his mind.Like a hawk watches its prey, Lucien watched her till the moment she stepped out of the building. When he saw her fully, something dull ticked inside him and he really hoped it was the drink. Without thought, his feet moved and before he knew it, he was standing close to her, holding her wrist in his palms. They were so tiny. He never knew. He'd never held her. He heard her gasp and whirl around reflexively, swinging her bag at his head. However, she held back when she saw who it was. Him. "What do you think you're doing Mr Voss?" Dahlia asked, eyes freezing.Lucien didn't speak and just stared at her. The silence was thick, weighing on each of their shoulders. For a moment, Dahlia almost let herself feel something...just like the past years. However, when he spoke, it all crashed. "What do you think you're doing?" his cold and hoarse voice came. "What do you mean Mr Voss?" Dahlia asked, prying her wrist away from his hand. Lucien let her. Lucien gave a sma
9. Just him..."What?!" Diane hissed, eyes blazing.Sasha inhaled calmly, watching the older woman unfold. "That's it mom" she said. "What an insect she is! Not dying. Not disappearing" she heaved. "Choosing now of all times to appear". "Maybe..." Sasha said standing, her face shifting to something sad and aggrieved. "Maybe it's not Lucien and I after all. We are not fated together mom"Diane scoffed. "What do mean by that? She walked to Sasha and held her hands, squeezing it gently. "I won't allow that. It's you or no one for my Lucien. Do you hear me?""Mom..." Sasha teared up, her voice slightly shaken."You have me behind you. Just go and prepare for the engagement party" Diane pressed."Mom, you know Dahlia is---" Sasha tried to refuse."Stop it" Diane cut. "Unless you don't want to marry Lucien""No mom, I want to marry Lucien. I really love him!" she sobbed."Then show it. Love makes people do things. Show me what your own love can do. Or I will bring someone else who will" D

7. When the Past sits Across the Table. Lucien collected himself and leaned back into his chair, exuding the kind of quiet dominance that swallowed a room. "Interesting choice Mr Fisher, bringing her into this" he said, his gaze piercing Dahlia. "I never knew this was a meeting for amateurs"."And I wasn't aware arrogance was now a negotiation strategy" she said, looking at him fully, her gaze unflinching. She raised her hand and Gaux quickly placed the folder in her hand. Dahlia slid it forward to the investor, her actions calm and measured. "Perhaps, times have changed".Mr Fisher's eyes flickered between them, his lips curling into a smile, obviously intrigued.Lucien let out a short, humorless laugh. "Cute. But business isn't a fairytale. Deals aren't won by charms or daydreams"Dahlia pouted faintly, one which Lucien caught unknowingly. "True. They're won with vision and the ability to deliver what others can't" she paused, allowing her smile to turn into a soft grin, "Something
6. She wasn't a ghost after all "What a party that was" Kimberly heaved as she threw herself into the closest couch. Dahlia only smiled faintly already heading for the stairs. "But" Kimberly said sitting up slightly, "Did you see her?"Dahlia halted in her steps, knowing where this was going. She turned her head, just enough. "Who?" Kimberly chuckled. "You're quite sly aren't you?"Dahlia shrugged and took a step. "I haven't even rested a day, and the past seems so eager" "It's a relief they didn't see you. It would have been a brawl""I don't care" Dahlia cut, voice crisp. "I'm not afraid". She began walking up the stairs. "Gaux should get everything ready. I want to meet that investor tomorrow" she said, disappearing into her room. Kimberly heaved a low sigh, sinking back into the couch. "I just hope you don't get hurt again Lia" she murmured, as the warm hands of sleep claimed her senses. Dawn arrived, clothing the sky with warm streaks of gold. Gaux was already waiting at th
5. The figure in Burgundy. In the backseat of his luxurious car, Lucien sat with a cigarette in between his lips. He took slow drags as his mind shifted to what his mother had said. This whole event was making him despise marriage deeply. "Boss, we got word from that investor" Jace reported. Lucien plucked his mind immediately from his seat of thoughts. His work was his only sanity now. "What did he say?" he asked, taking a sharp drag from his cigarette. "There's someone else in the picture now" Jace replied, his voice a little hesitant. Lucien paused mid-smoke, and looked at Jace fully. "What?" "Yes"."We almost had it Jace. How come...? What's the name of that company?" His eyes blazed with rage. He already had enough on his plate, the last thing he needed was an upstart company challenging him. "DAH Global" Jace replied. Lucien stubbed the cigarette butt into the ashtray beside him. He clenched his jaw tightly. "What the hell is that...?" Lucien growled lowly.Jace swallo
