Chapter 3

Autor: One Three One
Hailey hurried into the police station and threw her arms around Andrew, her face practically glowing with excitement.

She took a while to realize that I was actually sitting nearby. She approached me guiltily and took my hand.

"You probably heard what I said on the phone earlier, right? I'm pregnant with Andrew's baby. How could I just leave him alone in that private room, especially since he's the father of my baby, Nathan?"

Just then, two police officers walked past, talking among themselves. "Did you hear what happened just now? There was some guy at the bar who just got used by a bunch of wealthy women! He just came over to file a report…"

Hailey's face paled abruptly. She pulled Andrew closer to her side, then turned to me and asked, "Did you hear that? If I hadn't made it there in time, Andrew would've been the one going through that nightmare!

"You'd have done the same for someone you cared about, right? You get where I'm coming from, right, Nathan?"

Seeing the way she desperately protected Andrew, I laughed bitterly to myself.

I looked at her without a trace of emotion and asked hoarsely, "What if I told you that I was the one who had been assaulted, Hailey?"

In that instant, everything seemed to go still.

Hailey hesitated, then scowled, her eyes brimming with annoyance. "That's enough! I get that you're hurt because I'm having Andrew's baby, but claiming you were the one assaulted just out of spite is completely irrational, Nathan!"

I couldn't stand the sight of her lashing out at me so viciously for another man, so I turned on my heel and rushed out.

I couldn't stop my mind from flashing back to my memories with Andrew. I had treated him as the only family I had in the world since my parents had died young.

I was surrounded by some thugs in an alley back when I was in university. Andrew grabbed a brick and stood between us. He refused to step aside even though his head was bleeding badly.

I held his bloodied body that day and cried until I nearly fainted, yet he still smiled and teased me. "If anyone wants to lay a hand on my best friend, they'd have to step over my dead body!"

Yet, the very best friend who had once risked everything for my sake had gotten my fiancee pregnant.

I suddenly felt a gust of wind whipping across my face. I had unconsciously wandered to the edge of the rooftop.

"Nathan!" Andrew shouted frantically from behind. He grabbed me and pulled me down from the edge, his eyes turning completely bloodshot. "How can you kill yourself over some woman who can't keep her legs closed? Have you lost your mind, Nathan?"

I stared intently at him, overwhelmed by a crushing pain in my heart, unable to say anything at all.

Andrew took out a cigarette from his pack, lit it up, and took a long drag.

He stared straight at me and said with absolute sincerity, "You can rest assured that as long as you don't want this baby, I'll convince Hailey to get an abortion. Neither of us will ever have children together after this. I told you before, Nathan—I won't allow anyone to hurt you."

Upon noticing my silence, Andrew flicked his cigarette away. He bent down to pick up a steel pipe lying to the side and, without any hesitation, brought it down hard on his own arm.

In that instant, a sickening thud echoed through the air. Andrew went deathly pale and fell hard onto his knees.

"Andrew!"

Just then, the rooftop door was kicked open.

Hailey immediately saw Andrew, slumped on the ground with blood soaking his sleeve, and the bloodied steel pipe lying beside me.

She rushed over and kicked me aside, her eyes completely bloodshot. "How dare you lay a hand on him, Nathan!"

I lost my footing and fell hard onto the bare concrete, an exposed piece of rebar piercing straight into my right leg.

Hailey didn't even bother to check the facts before accusing me of striking Andrew, going so far as to kick me with brutal force.

I could taste the blood rising in my throat every time I drew in an agonizing breath. I gathered the last bit of strength I had left and said hoarsely, "We should just call off the engagement. We're done, Hailey."

Hailey held Andrew gently against her chest and shot me a murderous look. "You'd better stop threatening me by calling off the engagement! I don't have time for your nonsense, Nathan!"

"I actually mean it this time—"

Andrew groaned in pain before I could even finish what I was saying. Hailey grew frantic. She propped him up and led him away, not sparing me a single glance.

I curled up on the ground, barely clinging to life, while a large pool of blood spread beneath my leg.

Nathan's POVA year later, beyond the studio window in Northern Elaria, snow-dusted cedars stood in the cold as afternoon sunlight streamed through the glass and fell across the canvas. I stood before the easel, taking my time with each brushstroke.Bobby Hall, my junior who had just returned from home, worked on his canvas while sharing some gossip. "I heard that the Heath family is completely ruined. "Andrew went off the rails the moment Hailey dumped him. He even showed up at Somerville Group to cause a scene. He was sentenced to ten years in prison after Hailey turned over evidence of his embezzlement to the police."Upon hearing that, the young woman beside us chimed in. "Somerville Group isn't doing any better either. Hailey risked all her capital to go up against the Heath family back then, and both sides ended up suffering heavy losses. Somerville Group is nothing but a shell of a company these days."Bobby whispered, "I heard some people from the Heath family broke Haile

Hailey wasn't even sure how she made her way back to the wedding venue.Andrew was inside the lounge. He was still clad in Nathan's wedding suit as he casually fixed his hair in the mirror. When he heard the door being kicked open, Andrew caught sight of a disheveled Hailey through the reflection, a smile tugging at his lips as if none of this came as a surprise.Hailey grabbed him by the throat, her eyes bloodshot with rage. "You knew all along, didn't you? You sent that message right then just to ruin Nathan! You deliberately called me from the police station to stop me from finding out the truth! You played me, Andrew!"Andrew flushed from being choked, but he still managed a twisted smile. "Did I force you to hang up on his phone call and ignore his messages? Did I force you to break his right leg? You can drop the whole heartbroken victim act now! You were the one who chose to betray Nathan, not me!"Hailey's face flushed red with fury as she snarled, "You knew damn well how

Nathan appeared on the massive screen. He was standing at the entrance of the courthouse, wearing a black-and-white suit. He looked utterly calm despite his pale complexion.Hailey slowly turned her head, her eyes locked on the frail figure on the massive screen. On the screen, the reporter asked pointedly. "According to the case file, you actually tried to reach out for help when you got drugged at Nocturnal Bar. Did you really have no friends or acquaintances nearby at that moment, Mr. Zeller?"Nathan looked right at the camera and replied softly, "I did."The reporter continued pressing him. "Why didn't you ask that person for help, then?"Nathan furrowed his brow, seeming reluctant to relive that nightmare of a night. "I did. I sent her a message asking for help and called her too. I was in the private room right across from her when the whole thing took place, separated by only one hallway."In that instant, the crowd erupted into an uproar. The reporter's voice rose with i

In the meantime, the massive doors glided open as the spotlight shifted, illuminating the entrance of the banquet hall.Hailey quickly looked up, desperate to see who had arrived. She froze the moment she saw who was approaching. She realized that the man slowly walking toward her wasn't Nathan, whom she had been desperately looking for, but Andrew instead. She stared intently at the custom wedding suit Andrew was wearing. Nathan had spent countless late nights designing the wedding suit himself. He had waited three years to wear it, but now, another man was wearing it.She felt a sudden pang in her chest, her face clouding over with rage. She grabbed Andrew's wrist and barked, "Take it off!"Andrew smiled faintly. "What's the matter? Does Nathan's wedding suit look bad on me, Hailey?"Hailey's eyes flared with fury. "I won't repeat myself! Take it off this instant! It belongs to Nathan! Who allowed you to touch it?"Andrew's smile widened. "I've already slept with his fiance

Hailey's heart sank. She hurriedly called her lawyer to handle Andrew's situation, only finding the time to look around the villa once he arrived. In the end, the police officers had to suspend the arrest due to a lack of solid evidence.Hailey noticed that aside from Nathan's personal set of keys and case files, the cabinet at the foyer was completely bare. She looked around and found that there were no festive wedding decorations anywhere in the massive villa, only an empty, echoing silence. She scowled as she opened every door in the villa, only to find no sign of Nathan. She stared at the empty house and realized with a start that, except for a subtle lingering scent of jasmine in the air, not a single trace of Nathan remained in this villa. She stared at the empty closet, her mounting anxiety growing at an alarming speed.Andrew strolled up beside her and said casually, "You should just give it a rest. Nathan is obviously still throwing a fit over what happened earlier. H

I stared at the hospital ceiling, my expression hollow.Hailey sat beside my hospital bed, holding my cold hand in hers with an expression brimming with remorse. "W-We'll find a way to treat your leg… There has to be a way to treat it, Nathan…"I glanced at Andrew, whose eyes were brimming with tears, before shifting my gaze toward Hailey. I then said faintly, "I've injured my leg for the second time now, Hailey."Hailey immediately stiffened.Three years ago, amidst a heavy blizzard, Andrew dragged me into a "quick reply game" to test our significant others' loyalty. Ten minutes later, a Maybach pulled over and whisked Andrew away. I, on the other hand, was left stranded in the freezing blizzard.I eventually passed out in the freezing snow and remained unconscious all night.
