Chapter 2

Author: Year on Year
Madeline looked at me, her expression unreadable. "You're back?"

"Yeah." I changed my shoes, ignored them, and went straight to the bedroom. I needed to take stock of my things.

I opened a drawer in my wardrobe and froze. The tie I had bought just last week was gone. It was a new design from a high-end luxury brand, a limited edition I had bought through a personal shopper for more than 400 dollars. I had only worn it once.

I walked out of the bedroom. "Madeline, where's my tie?"

She was sitting there with the remote, flipping through channels. She didn't even look up. "Oh, Kenneth said his old one was worn out, so I let him take yours."

Blood rushed to my head. "You gave it to him?"

"Yeah." She finally looked at me, completely matter-of-fact. "It's just a tie. I'll buy you a new one later."

Kenneth spoke quietly from the side. "Charlie, I'm sorry. I didn't know it was that expensive. I'll buy you another one tomorrow."

"How are you going to replace something I've already worn?" I demanded.

Madeline's patience began to wear thin. "Charlie, that's enough. It's just a tie. I already said I'll buy you a new one. Do you really have to keep sulking over something so trivial?"

Trivial? He had his fingerprint registered on the lock to my home. He could come in and take my things whenever he wanted, and all of that was trivial?

"Let's get a divorce," I said.

The living room fell silent.

Madeline stared at me as if she'd just heard the funniest joke in the world. "What did you say?"

"I said, let's get a divorce," I repeated.

She stood and walked over to me. "You want a divorce over a tie? Charlie, have you lost your mind?"

"I haven't." I looked her straight in the eyes. "I just find this disgusting."

Her face flushed. "Fine. Fine. You think I'm disgusting, is that it?"

She snatched her jacket off the couch and headed for the door. "I'm not coming home tonight. You can sit here and be disgusted all by yourself."

She slammed the door so hard the entire house seemed to shake.

Kenneth stood and gave me a helpless look. "Charlie, don't be mad. That's just how Madeline is. I'll go buy you a new tie."

"Don't bother." I looked at him. "You should leave too."

He froze, his face turning pale. In the end, he picked up his bag and left with his head bowed.

The house was finally quiet. I sat on the couch, picked up my phone, and called my mother.

"Mom, I want a divorce."

A long silence followed on the other end.

"Charlie, you're being unreasonable again. Married couples argue all the time. Why do you keep bringing up divorce over every little thing?" she asked.

"She registered another man's fingerprint on our front door," I replied.

"There must be a reason for that. Don't be so petty. It's not easy for a woman to work outside the home. You need to be more understanding of her," my mother claimed.

"She also gave the new tie I bought to that man."

"How much could one tie cost? Didn't she say she'd buy you a new one? Charlie, you can't be this stubborn. Madeline is a good girl. Don't drive her away," my mother said.

I looked at Madeline. "What's the point of telling me all this?""There is no point." She shook her head. "I know. I just wanted to tell you. Now that I'm done, I'll leave."She turned and walked a few steps before stopping again. "Charlie, I hope you'll be happy."She didn't turn around.I stood there and watched her disappear into the crowd, still holding the 200 dollars she had returned to me. A slight chill rode the wind as it swept past.I lowered my head and stared at the envelope for a long time. Then I put the money in my bag and headed home.…When I got home, I made dinner. Three dishes, all for one person. After dinner, I sat on the couch and turned on the TV. A relationship talk show was playing, and the host was interviewing a man who was crying his eyes out."I shouldn't have believed that woman's sweet talk. I shouldn't have abandoned the person who truly cared about me. Now she doesn't want me anymore, and I've got nothing..."I watched for a few seconds befor

I drove to the outskirts of town, found a landfill, and threw everything away.On the drive back, the sky was blue and the breeze was gentle. I rolled down the window and let the wind rush in. It tousled my hair, but I didn't care.My phone rang. The number was unfamiliar.I answered."Hello, is this Charlie?" A woman's voice came through the phone, vaguely familiar."Yes. Who is this?""This is Vivian Smith."I froze for a moment.Vivian was my first love. We'd dated for five years before eventually breaking up."How did you get my number?" I asked."I asked a few of our old classmates for it." Her voice held a trace of nervousness. "Charlie, I heard you got divorced?""Yeah.""Then can we meet? I want to see you."I didn't answer."I know I was wrong back then. I shouldn't have let you go so easily. I've regretted it all these years, but I was too ashamed to come looking for you. Now that I've heard you're divorced, I feel like maybe life is giving me a second chance."

Madeline froze."We're divorced now. What's mine is mine, and what's yours is yours. Whether you're doing well or not has nothing to do with me. I helped you today because of our history. But once that goodwill runs out, it's gone," I said calmly. She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something.I didn't give her the chance. I turned and walked away.…That night, I lay in bed and thought about everything for a long time.I remembered when we'd first gotten married.Madeline'd actually treated me well back then. Whenever I worked late, she'd leave a light on for me. Once, when I caught a cold and came down with a fever, she'd made me herbal tea. She'd never complained about how much money I spent on skincare products, either.I'd thought that was what a simple, happy life looked like. I'd believed we'd live that way for the rest of our lives. But I'd been wrong. She hadn't treated me well because she loved me. She'd simply needed a man who could take care of her and m

Madeline stood there, unable to say a word. I turned and walked back into the office."Charlie!" she called after me. "Are you really going to be this heartless?"I didn't look back.Only later did I learn the real reason Madeline and Kenneth had broken up: money.-After they moved out of Charlie's house, they rented a small apartment.Madeline paid three months' rent upfront, along with the security deposit, which cost her more than 2,800 dollars. Combined with the expenses from her divorce with Charlie, the expense had nearly wiped out her savings. She thought Kenneth would help shoulder the burden, but he didn't.During their first week in the apartment, he still made a show of helping out. He cooked a few meals and did some laundry.By the second week, however, he had started complaining that the apartment was too small, the neighborhood was terrible, and his commute to the office was too long.In the third week, he found a new job as a server at an upscale club. The pay

Life after the divorce was much quieter than I'd expected.I replaced every lock in the house and deleted Madeline's and Kenneth's fingerprints from the smart lock.I cleared out the guest room, threw away all the old sheets and bedding, and bought new ones.I stuffed everything Kenneth had left behind into a large garbage bag and tossed it into the dumpster downstairs. When I took out the trash that day, I happened to run into Jennifer Foster, an older neighbor who lived downstairs. She greeted me with a smile. "Charlie, I haven't seen your wife in a while. Is she away on a business trip?"I smiled. "We got divorced."Jennifer's smile froze. "What? What happened?""We just weren't right for each other."I didn't say anything else. After throwing out the trash, I went back upstairs.…That night, my mother called."Charlie, I heard you got divorced?""Yeah.""You brat. How could you not talk to us about something this serious?" she demanded."Mom, I did talk to you. You

Kenneth realized he had said the wrong thing and quickly lowered his head, retreating behind Madeline.Madeline set the shopping bags down and looked at me. "Charlie, we need to talk.""About what?""The house." She walked over and sat at the other end of the couch. Her expression was much softer than it had been that morning. "I've thought about it. You're right. I wronged you in this marriage. I'll give you the house. I accept that."I looked at her and waited for her to continue."But..." She paused. "You have to pay me back the 28,000 dollars down payment."I laughed. "Madeline, you really know how to work the numbers. The house goes to me, and you get 28,000 dollars. So basically, I pay you 28,000 dollars and get a house worth 400,000 dollars. Is that what you're saying?"Her expression changed. "Charlie, don't be ungrateful. I could take you to court. My family paid the down payment, and I'm the one paying the mortgage."If the court decides how to divide it, you'd probab
