Chapter 4

Auteur: Year on Year
After saying that, Madeline untied her apron and tossed it onto the chair. "I'll bring his things over today. You'd better know what's good for you."

The door slammed shut behind her.

I sat at the dining table and stared at the untouched breakfast. So the apology and the money hadn't been meant to earn my forgiveness. They'd only been meant to soften the blow of what came next.

…

At 3:00 p.m. that afternoon, they returned.

Madeline carried two large suitcases, while Kenneth followed with a cardboard box in his arms.

When he saw me, a hint of unease crossed his face. "Charlie, I'm only staying here temporarily. I'll move out soon."

Madeline set the suitcases down in the middle of the living room. "What do you mean, temporarily? Just make yourself at home. Here's the guest room key."

She held out a set of keys to Kenneth, but he didn't take them. Instead, he looked at me. "Charlie, are you okay with this?"

I ignored him and turned to Madeline. "This is your decision. You don't need to ask me."

Madeline seemed pleased that I knew my place. She helped Kenneth carry his luggage into the guest room while I stayed where I was and watched the door close behind them.

My mother sometimes stayed in that room when she came to visit. I'd replaced the sheets and comforter just last month. They were freshly washed and still smelled like sunshine.

Now they belonged to another man.

…

That evening, I cooked four dishes for dinner but set out only two place settings, one for Madeline and one for me.

When she came out of the room, she glanced at the dining table. "Where's Kenneth's place setting?"

"I didn't make dinner for him."

She frowned. "What do you mean?"

"I mean I'm only responsible for cooking for the two of us. I'm not cooking for an extra person," I explained matter-of-factly.

Kenneth walked out of the guest room just then and overheard me. An awkward look crossed his face. "It's fine. I already ate out."

Madeline's expression darkened. "Charlie, you're doing this on purpose, aren't you?"

"Yes," I said. "I am."

Dinner passed under a strange tension. Madeline and I ate in silence while Kenneth sat on the couch with his phone in hand, occasionally glancing over at us.

After dinner, I carried the dishes into the kitchen, and Madeline followed me.

"You really embarrassed me today," she claimed.

I turned to her. "When you brought another man into our home to live with us, did you ever stop to think about how that made me feel?"

"That's different," she argued. "He needs help."

"So do I," I said.

She froze.

I added, "I need a home without another person living in it. Can you help me with that?"

I looked at Madeline. "What's the point of telling me all this?""There is no point." She shook her head. "I know. I just wanted to tell you. Now that I'm done, I'll leave."She turned and walked a few steps before stopping again. "Charlie, I hope you'll be happy."She didn't turn around.I stood there and watched her disappear into the crowd, still holding the 200 dollars she had returned to me. A slight chill rode the wind as it swept past.I lowered my head and stared at the envelope for a long time. Then I put the money in my bag and headed home.…When I got home, I made dinner. Three dishes, all for one person. After dinner, I sat on the couch and turned on the TV. A relationship talk show was playing, and the host was interviewing a man who was crying his eyes out."I shouldn't have believed that woman's sweet talk. I shouldn't have abandoned the person who truly cared about me. Now she doesn't want me anymore, and I've got nothing..."I watched for a few seconds befor

I drove to the outskirts of town, found a landfill, and threw everything away.On the drive back, the sky was blue and the breeze was gentle. I rolled down the window and let the wind rush in. It tousled my hair, but I didn't care.My phone rang. The number was unfamiliar.I answered."Hello, is this Charlie?" A woman's voice came through the phone, vaguely familiar."Yes. Who is this?""This is Vivian Smith."I froze for a moment.Vivian was my first love. We'd dated for five years before eventually breaking up."How did you get my number?" I asked."I asked a few of our old classmates for it." Her voice held a trace of nervousness. "Charlie, I heard you got divorced?""Yeah.""Then can we meet? I want to see you."I didn't answer."I know I was wrong back then. I shouldn't have let you go so easily. I've regretted it all these years, but I was too ashamed to come looking for you. Now that I've heard you're divorced, I feel like maybe life is giving me a second chance."

Madeline froze."We're divorced now. What's mine is mine, and what's yours is yours. Whether you're doing well or not has nothing to do with me. I helped you today because of our history. But once that goodwill runs out, it's gone," I said calmly. She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something.I didn't give her the chance. I turned and walked away.…That night, I lay in bed and thought about everything for a long time.I remembered when we'd first gotten married.Madeline'd actually treated me well back then. Whenever I worked late, she'd leave a light on for me. Once, when I caught a cold and came down with a fever, she'd made me herbal tea. She'd never complained about how much money I spent on skincare products, either.I'd thought that was what a simple, happy life looked like. I'd believed we'd live that way for the rest of our lives. But I'd been wrong. She hadn't treated me well because she loved me. She'd simply needed a man who could take care of her and m

Madeline stood there, unable to say a word. I turned and walked back into the office."Charlie!" she called after me. "Are you really going to be this heartless?"I didn't look back.Only later did I learn the real reason Madeline and Kenneth had broken up: money.-After they moved out of Charlie's house, they rented a small apartment.Madeline paid three months' rent upfront, along with the security deposit, which cost her more than 2,800 dollars. Combined with the expenses from her divorce with Charlie, the expense had nearly wiped out her savings. She thought Kenneth would help shoulder the burden, but he didn't.During their first week in the apartment, he still made a show of helping out. He cooked a few meals and did some laundry.By the second week, however, he had started complaining that the apartment was too small, the neighborhood was terrible, and his commute to the office was too long.In the third week, he found a new job as a server at an upscale club. The pay

Life after the divorce was much quieter than I'd expected.I replaced every lock in the house and deleted Madeline's and Kenneth's fingerprints from the smart lock.I cleared out the guest room, threw away all the old sheets and bedding, and bought new ones.I stuffed everything Kenneth had left behind into a large garbage bag and tossed it into the dumpster downstairs. When I took out the trash that day, I happened to run into Jennifer Foster, an older neighbor who lived downstairs. She greeted me with a smile. "Charlie, I haven't seen your wife in a while. Is she away on a business trip?"I smiled. "We got divorced."Jennifer's smile froze. "What? What happened?""We just weren't right for each other."I didn't say anything else. After throwing out the trash, I went back upstairs.…That night, my mother called."Charlie, I heard you got divorced?""Yeah.""You brat. How could you not talk to us about something this serious?" she demanded."Mom, I did talk to you. You

Kenneth realized he had said the wrong thing and quickly lowered his head, retreating behind Madeline.Madeline set the shopping bags down and looked at me. "Charlie, we need to talk.""About what?""The house." She walked over and sat at the other end of the couch. Her expression was much softer than it had been that morning. "I've thought about it. You're right. I wronged you in this marriage. I'll give you the house. I accept that."I looked at her and waited for her to continue."But..." She paused. "You have to pay me back the 28,000 dollars down payment."I laughed. "Madeline, you really know how to work the numbers. The house goes to me, and you get 28,000 dollars. So basically, I pay you 28,000 dollars and get a house worth 400,000 dollars. Is that what you're saying?"Her expression changed. "Charlie, don't be ungrateful. I could take you to court. My family paid the down payment, and I'm the one paying the mortgage."If the court decides how to divide it, you'd probab
