Chapter 3

Penulis: Aya
Lydia tugged lightly at his sleeve.

"Leave it, Graham. Don't fight.

"We've got an early morning tomorrow. Let's go."

Graham looked at me.

"Tessa, I'm giving you one night to cool off.

"After the ceremony tomorrow, we'll go refile.

"Don't turn something small into a disaster."

After the door shut, Maisie crouched down and picked up the crushed paper crown.

She asked me, "Mom, if a paper crown gets stepped on, can it be fixed?"

I knelt in front of her and dropped it in the trash.

"If it's broken, we don't keep it."

"People too?"

I smoothed her hair.

"People too."

First thing the next morning, I called my lawyer, Renee Porter.

"I need three things.

"Custody filings, authorization to sell the house, and a petition to change Maisie's last name."

The line went quiet for a few seconds.

"Tessa. You're sure?"

I looked at Maisie's swollen eyes while she slept.

"I'm sure.

"Graham signed the settlement, and he signed the addendum giving me primary custody."

I'd made him sign that the third time he insisted on divorcing alongside Lydia.

He'd said, "We'll be remarried in a few days anyway. Put in whatever you want."

He never read a word of it.

Because he was certain I couldn't leave him.

At 10 that morning, Graham's wedding motorcade pulled up downstairs.

He was in a groom's suit, leaning against the car, calling me.

I stood behind the curtain and let it ring.

Then a voice message came through.

"Tessa, don't do this.

"Lydia's ex is already at the hotel. We have to see this through.

"Bring Maisie and sit at the head table. Do that much for me."

The second Maisie heard "head table," her face went white.

I turned my phone off.

The movers showed up soon after.

There wasn't much in that house that actually belonged to Maisie and me.

Her books, her clothes, her sketchpads, and the little tin box with three years of holiday money in it.

Mrs. Hollis stood in the doorway wiping her eyes.

"Mrs. Bennett. You should've gone a long time ago."

I corrected her.

"It's Ms. Weller now."

Mrs. Hollis nodded through the tears.

Maisie walked to the door with her backpack and looked back at the living room one more time.

The family portrait was still on the wall.

In it, Graham had her in his arms and smiled like a father who showed up.

Right before that picture was taken, Lydia had called to say she was upset.

He almost walked out on us that day too.

He only stayed 10 minutes because Maisie cried and grabbed his pant leg.

I took the frame down.

Maisie asked, "Mom, are we taking it?"

I slid the photo out and tore it in half.

The half with the two of us went into my bag.

Graham's half went in the trash.

"We take what belongs to us."

That afternoon, Lydia posted a livestream link to her wedding.

She was in a white gown, on Graham's arm, beaming.

Her caption read, "Thanks to a certain someone for having my back today. Old debts settled."

People egged her on in the comments.

"Bennett's playing the groom a little too well."

"Isn't Tessa going to lose it when she sees this?"

Lydia replied, "She's used to it."

Maisie leaned over, glanced at my screen, and quietly turned the phone face down.

"Mom. Don't look."

I smoothed her hair.

"Okay. We won't."

On the way to the airport, Renee messaged me.

"Filings are in, and I've got a cash buyer for the house.

"I've also had her posts and the wedding stream preserved and notarized."

I sent back one word. "Good."

Before we boarded, I took Graham off my blocked list for one minute and sent him one last text.

"Graham, Maisie's taking my last name.

"Stop showing up to play her father when it suits you."

Once it went through, I blocked him again.

Maisie fell asleep against my shoulder.

She still had that half of the photo in her hand.

Just the two of us in it.

Nothing else.

His eyes were rimmed red."I know what I did to her. But blood doesn't change."I looked at him."No. Blood doesn't change."But kids remember who held them when they were sick, who stayed for their birthdays, and who stood in front of them when they were scared."Graham, other than a last name, what did you ever actually give her?"His lips trembled."I can make it up.""You can't."My voice stayed level."She's already learned how to stop waiting for you."That one landed. Owen put out the whole file at once. The first image was Lydia's private account. Her profile picture was a corner cropped out of a bridal-shop fitting photo. She'd assumed nobody would place it.Owen did.Because she'd charged that dress to his card. There were messages Lydia had sent Graham while she was still married.Messages pushing him to divorce.Screenshots of her bragging on the private account. And a clip of her saying it in her own voice."His kid's kind of funny when she cries."The internet turned on him overnight.People dug up the fact that he'd left his sick daughter behind on the day of Lydia's ceremony.Others built a timeline of all six divorces."Every time his first love threw a fit, he went home and took his own family apart.""That's not devotion. There's something wrong with his head."Somebody found an old family-day post on Bennett Group's company account. In the photo, Graham was holding Maisie onstage, saying family came first for him.Peop

Maisie looked at me.I didn't answer for her.She twisted the hem of her dress and said quietly, "I don't want to."The mediator asked again, "Do you mean not right now, or not ever?"Maisie kept her head down. It took her a while."I don't know about later."But right now, when I look at him, I think about the day it rained."Mom was holding me. I felt so bad from the fever. And his car drove away."She said it slowly. With every sentence, more color left Graham's face."I wasn't fishing for attention that day."I really couldn't stand up."Graham's breath caught."Maisie, Dad knows he was wrong."From now on I'll be there for dinner every night. Homework. Every birthday."Maisie looked up at him."What about the birthdays that already happened?"Graham had nothing.Maisie's voice stayed soft, but every word landed."On my sixth birthday you were at the bridal shop with Ms. Harper."On my fifth birthday you took her to the coast."On my fourth birthday you said sh

Graham ignored her.Lydia laughed, furious."You forget what you used to tell me?"You said Tessa had too much sense to leave. You said Maisie was too attached to you. You said neither of them could get by without you."Now they're actually gone and suddenly you're frantic?"Graham's head snapped up."Shut up."Lydia pulled her sunglasses off. Her eyes were wet too."Why should I?"I got divorced for you. I let Owen laugh at me for you. And now you're telling me to shut up?"Graham stared at her."You said Owen came to wreck the wedding."Lydia's expression stiffened."He did.""When?"Graham took out his phone and pulled up a still from the hotel's cameras."Owen was out of the country before the ceremony even started."He was never there."The color drained out of Lydia's face.Graham opened another file. A recording. One of the girls at the bridal shop had sent it to him.Lydia's laugh came through clearly."Don't worry about Tessa. She'll make noise for two da

It was evening when we landed in Cedar Falls. My mother, Carol, was waiting past the gate. The second Maisie saw her, she finally broke down."Grandma."My mother pulled her in with both arms, her own eyes filling."Look at you. How'd you get so thin?"My father, Ray, stood there and didn't ask a single question. He just took the bags."Come on home. Dinner's warm."Pot roast and mac and cheese were on the table, both of Maisie's favorites. She got through half a plate, then looked up."Grandma, is Dad going to find us here?"My mother's hand stopped over the serving spoon.I answered for her."He won't find us."And if he does, he isn't getting in."Maisie nodded and went back to her food. She slept hard that night. No waking up crying, no clutching her smartwatch calling for her father.I sat by the bed watching her small face and finally worked up the nerve to turn my phone on.Dozens of messages from numbers I didn't know."Tessa, where are you?""Is Maisie's f

By the time the ceremony got to the rings, Graham finally realized something was off.He called me. It wouldn't go through. He called Maisie's smartwatch. It was powered off.The officiant smiled and prompted him from the front, "You may kiss the bride."Lydia tipped her face up, triumph all over it.Graham shoved her away."Where's Tessa?"Lydia's smile froze."Where would she go? She's probably home waiting for you to come talk her down."Someone in the crowd laughed.Graham gripped his phone. His color kept draining. He pulled up the home cameras. The living room was empty.Couch gone. Coffee table gone. Maisie's favorite bookcase gone. There was a pale rectangle on the wall where the family portrait had been. His breath stopped, and he turned and ran off the platform.Lydia grabbed his arm."Graham, are you out of your mind? My ex is sitting right out there."For the first time, Graham tore his arm free."Get off."Lydia stared."You're taking that tone with me
