Chapter 4

Penulis: Aya
By the time the ceremony got to the rings, Graham finally realized something was off.

He called me. It wouldn't go through.

He called Maisie's smartwatch. It was powered off.

The officiant smiled and prompted him from the front, "You may kiss the bride."

Lydia tipped her face up, triumph all over it.

Graham shoved her away.

"Where's Tessa?"

Lydia's smile froze.

"Where would she go? She's probably home waiting for you to come talk her down."

Someone in the crowd laughed.

Graham gripped his phone. His color kept draining.

He pulled up the home cameras.

The living room was empty.

Couch gone. Coffee table gone. Maisie's favorite bookcase gone.

There was a pale rectangle on the wall where the family portrait had been.

His breath stopped, and he turned and ran off the platform.

Lydia grabbed his arm.

"Graham, are you out of your mind? My ex is sitting right out there."

For the first time, Graham tore his arm free.

"Get off."

Lydia stared.

"You're taking that tone with me? Over her?"

Graham didn't answer.

He ran out of the hotel without even taking the ring.

20 minutes later, he opened our front door.

The house was empty enough to echo.

Maisie's bedroom door was half open.

He went in and found a notebook on her desk.

The first page had a writing assignment on it.

The title was "My Dad."

Maisie had written three lines and crossed out every one.

One sentence was left.

"I used to have a dad. Now I don't."

Graham's fingers shook so hard he could barely hold the page.

The torn half of the family photo was still in the trash can.

He was smiling in it.

Like the punch line of a joke.

Heels sounded at the front door.

Lydia had followed him, out of breath.

"Graham, stop it. There were hundreds of people at that wedding and you left me standing there. How am I supposed to show my face after this?"

Graham raised his head slowly.

"You told me she'd never leave."

Lydia's eyes flickered.

"She's using the kid to scare you.

"I've seen a hundred women like her. Give it a few days. She runs out of money, she comes back."

Right then his phone rang.

It was Renee.

"Mr. Bennett, I'm calling on behalf of Tessa Weller.

"The house has been listed for sale by the titleholder. Please collect your personal belongings within three days.

"Custody, records transfer, and the name-change petition are all filed.

"Route anything further through me. Don't contact Ms. Weller or the child directly."

The last of the color left Graham's face.

"She's changing Maisie's name?

"On what grounds?"

Renee's voice stayed level.

"On the grounds that you signed away primary custody six times.

"And that your daughter told the evaluator she doesn't want to be alone with you."

Graham looked like he'd been hit square in the face.

He turned toward Maisie's room.

It was stripped bare. The only thing left was a birthday sticker in the corner that the movers had missed.

In crooked handwriting it said, "Dad is coming home this year."

Maisie had stuck it there herself, last year.

She waited until midnight and fell asleep at the dining table.

Graham had spent that whole night parked outside Lydia's building, listening to the rain with her.

He'd figured a kid was easy enough to make it up to later.

He was only understanding now that kids don't forget.

She'd just wanted to love him too badly to say so.

The call ended.

Graham stood in the empty house and started dialing my number like a man coming apart.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Blocked every time.

Maisie's smartwatch wouldn't connect either.

And he finally got it.

This wasn't another standoff.

It wasn't another performance.

My daughter and I were done with him.

His eyes were rimmed red."I know what I did to her. But blood doesn't change."I looked at him."No. Blood doesn't change."But kids remember who held them when they were sick, who stayed for their birthdays, and who stood in front of them when they were scared."Graham, other than a last name, what did you ever actually give her?"His lips trembled."I can make it up.""You can't."My voice stayed level."She's already learned how to stop waiting for you."That one landed. He stood there and didn't move.People were coming and going through the lobby all around us.For a man who'd always cared so much what people thought, it was the first time he didn't seem to notice any of them.He pulled a stack of papers out of a folder, fingers shaking badly."I drew up a transfer."The house, the shares, the cash—all of it goes to Maisie."If you don't believe me, I'll sign it right now."I didn't take them."Money isn't what she's short on."Graham's voice shook."Then wha

Owen put out the whole file at once. The first image was Lydia's private account. Her profile picture was a corner cropped out of a bridal-shop fitting photo. She'd assumed nobody would place it.Owen did.Because she'd charged that dress to his card. There were messages Lydia had sent Graham while she was still married.Messages pushing him to divorce.Screenshots of her bragging on the private account. And a clip of her saying it in her own voice."His kid's kind of funny when she cries."The internet turned on him overnight.People dug up the fact that he'd left his sick daughter behind on the day of Lydia's ceremony.Others built a timeline of all six divorces."Every time his first love threw a fit, he went home and took his own family apart.""That's not devotion. There's something wrong with his head."Somebody found an old family-day post on Bennett Group's company account. In the photo, Graham was holding Maisie onstage, saying family came first for him.Peop

Maisie looked at me.I didn't answer for her.She twisted the hem of her dress and said quietly, "I don't want to."The mediator asked again, "Do you mean not right now, or not ever?"Maisie kept her head down. It took her a while."I don't know about later."But right now, when I look at him, I think about the day it rained."Mom was holding me. I felt so bad from the fever. And his car drove away."She said it slowly. With every sentence, more color left Graham's face."I wasn't fishing for attention that day."I really couldn't stand up."Graham's breath caught."Maisie, Dad knows he was wrong."From now on I'll be there for dinner every night. Homework. Every birthday."Maisie looked up at him."What about the birthdays that already happened?"Graham had nothing.Maisie's voice stayed soft, but every word landed."On my sixth birthday you were at the bridal shop with Ms. Harper."On my fifth birthday you took her to the coast."On my fourth birthday you said sh

Graham ignored her.Lydia laughed, furious."You forget what you used to tell me?"You said Tessa had too much sense to leave. You said Maisie was too attached to you. You said neither of them could get by without you."Now they're actually gone and suddenly you're frantic?"Graham's head snapped up."Shut up."Lydia pulled her sunglasses off. Her eyes were wet too."Why should I?"I got divorced for you. I let Owen laugh at me for you. And now you're telling me to shut up?"Graham stared at her."You said Owen came to wreck the wedding."Lydia's expression stiffened."He did.""When?"Graham took out his phone and pulled up a still from the hotel's cameras."Owen was out of the country before the ceremony even started."He was never there."The color drained out of Lydia's face.Graham opened another file. It was evening when we landed in Cedar Falls. My mother, Carol, was waiting past the gate. The second Maisie saw her, she finally broke down."Grandma."My mother pulled her in with both arms, her own eyes filling."Look at you. How'd you get so thin?"My father, Ray, stood there and didn't ask a single question. He just took the bags."Come on home. Dinner's warm."Pot roast and mac and cheese were on the table, both of Maisie's favorites. She got through half a plate, then looked up."Grandma, is Dad going to find us here?"My mother's hand stopped over the serving spoon.I answered for her."He won't find us."And if he does, he isn't getting in."Maisie nodded and went back to her food. She slept hard that night. No waking up crying, no clutching her smartwatch calling for her father.I sat by the bed watching her small face and finally worked up the nerve to turn my phone on.Dozens of messages from numbers I didn't know."Tessa, where are you?""Is Maisie's f
