Chapter 2

Author: Liora
Back then, if Raine had said something like that, I would have already started a fight with him.

He knew exactly where to hit me. Sure enough, his next move was to pull my parents into it, using them as a shield.

“Your parents are getting older. They cannot keep taking care of Lisa.”

“You are her sister. You should be helping too.”

Before he could even finish, our son ran over and grabbed my arm, shaking it.

“Mom, let Aunt Lisa stay, please?

“If you do not want her in your room, she can stay in mine instead.

“Please? Just listen to Dad this once, okay?”

I had never seen him like this before.

Normally, he was like Raine’s mirror image. He was cold-faced and distant, barely giving me a response when I said hello.

Now that he was willing to give up his own space for Lisa’s sake.

I clenched my fist so tightly that my nails dug into my palm, leaving bloody crescents.

I took a deep breath and let go of his hand.

“Fine. If that is what you all want, I agree.”

“If there’s nothing else, I’m going to rest.”

Half-asleep later that night, I heard the door creak open.

Then, there was a loud bang. Something was placed on the nightstand.

I was too exhausted to open my eyes.

Somewhere in the fog, I heard Raine’s voice.

“Hannah? Are you awake?”

When I did not respond, he reached out and shoved me.

A sharp pain shot through me. I opened my eyes with a frown and rasped, “What is it?”

There was not a trace of concern on his face. It was just a scowl.

“Seriously? You are sleeping while the house is a mess?”

“I made some soup. I am taking it to Lisa with our son. Clean up the kitchen.”

I put on a bitter smile.

All these years of marriage, and I never knew he could cook.

It was always me running around, doing everything, while he found fault with every little thing.

Before I could dwell on it, Raine snapped again.

“Why are you still lying there? Get up and do your part.”

I knew his temper, especially when it came to Lisa. He was always unreasonable and obsessed.

I did not waste my breath. I just got up silently.

He seemed satisfied when he saw me moving and left with our son.

I watched them leave from behind then collapsed back onto the bed.

The next morning, the clatter of dishes woke me.

As I stepped out of the bedroom, Raine’s voice called from the front door.

“Something came up at work. After you drop our son off at school, remember to take breakfast to Lisa.”

He walked away without looking back.

I was about to set the breakfast down when a wave of dizziness hit me.

The world went black, and I collapsed onto the floor.

In the haze, I saw my son panic and rush toward me.

For a moment, I thought that perhaps they did care about me after all.

However, reality slapped me hard in the face.

When I came to, the cold floor was biting against my skin.

“Dad, good thing I caught the breakfast in time. Otherwise, Aunt Lisa would not have anything to eat.”

Raine patted his head with a smile.

“That’s my boy. Lisa’s going to be so happy when she knows about this.”

The two of them kept laughing and talking, not even noticing that I was still lying on the floor.

Something inside me tore open.

In my mind, my inner wolf let out a furious, trembling howl.

I got up, shaky and slow, making sure the sound was enough to catch their attention.

My father’s eyes were red. His trembling fingers clenched tightly around his wife’s hand.Their grandson, who was beside them, finally broke down. He rushed at Sophie, pounding weakly against her arm with his clenched fists.“You are lying!“Mom is not dead. She would not leave me!“I hate you! You are a liar!”Compared to their grief, Raine stood out with a disturbing calmness. He stared at Sophie for a long time. His voice was low and hollow.“Where is she buried? I just… I just want to see her one last time.”Sophie let out a cold, bitter laugh.“She did not want you there.“If you truly regret what happened, start by cleaning up the wreckage. Start with the ones who destroyed her.”She tossed a thick stack of documents onto the table in front of him.Raine barely flipped through the first few pages before his face drained of color. Then, all at once, rage exploded through him. He grabbed a nearby chair and hurled it at Lisa without hesitation.“You venomous snake!

Sophie stared coldly at Raine, who stood outside the door. Without a word, she started to shut the door in his face, but he reached out to block it.“Sophie, where’s Hannah? Has she contacted you lately?”Raine’s voice was calm, but the moment the words left his mouth, Sophie’s fury ignited.“You heartless bastard! You do not deserve to speak her name!“You betrayed her, abandoned her. You are nothing but a murderer!”The word “heartless” only made Raine frown slightly. However, when she called him a “murderer,” his expression visibly darkened.“Sophie, I admit I did not treat you well back then, but this is a serious accusation. Do not slander me without proof.”That smug, self-righteous tone of his was the final straw.Sophie slapped him hard across the face.“You want to know what happened?“Fine. Tomorrow morning. Meet me at Moonshade Law Firm!”Without waiting for a reply, she slammed the door in his face.Raine stood outside, stunned. Her words echoed in his mind—“Mu

“Give me that medical report!”Lisa snarled, reaching out desperately to snatch it back. Her biological mother only gave a cold, mocking laugh. Her eyes were full of contempt.“Two hundred thousand. That is the price to keep my mouth shut.”“No way!” yelled Lusa, lunging again to grab the paper.Just as the two women struggled, the door suddenly opened. Raine and the rest of the family walked in.Raine’s brows knitted in suspicion when he saw Lisa standing there perfectly fine.Lisa’s expression shifted instantly. She gave a few weak coughs and forced a fragile smile. Then, she said in a weak voice, “Raine… you’re here.”Raine’s concern returned instantly. He rushed to her side and helped her sit down.Standing off to the side, as Alice watched him fuss over Lisa, and a sly glint flashed across her eyes.“You’re her future mate?” Alice dragged out the words in a teasing, pointed tone.Lisa's smile froze on her face. She quickly jumped in."She’s just a caretaker I hired. I

The steady beeping of medical machines echoed in my ears as I struggled to open my eyes.Sophie rushed over. Her voice was choked with emotion.“Hannah… you’re finally awake.”Tears rolled down her cheeks one after another.I tried to lift my hand to comfort her, but I could not even move my fingertips.I knew I was dying.Oddly, I felt calm. The only thing I could not let go of was her.“Sophie… I am sorry.”My voice was faint and barely audible. Her eyes grew even redder, and the tears would not stop falling.I wanted to wipe them away, but no matter how hard I tried, I could not lift my arms. She understood what I was thinking and leaned in close.“I am here, Hannah. I am right here.”I whispered into her ear,“This last part… It’s the only thing I can do for you.“Thank you for never leaving.”As soon as the words left my lips, darkness started creeping in, slow and quiet.Somewhere far off, I heard a phone ringing. It was a message from my father.[You have alr

Once Sophie realized I had seen through her disguise, she gave up pretending.“Raine tried to find you last night, but you weren’t there…“I said a few things he did not like. Then Lisa pulled some tricks. I ended up fighting with him.”I immediately understood.Raine and Lisa had ganged up on Sophie. It was two against one. They seriously did that?Even with my soul in decline, I could still feel my rage burning like wildfire. My inner wolf howled with me in fury. My fingertips itched and my claws were slipping out.Sophie sensed the shift in my energy and rushed to hold me tightly.“I am fine, Hannah. Do not do anything rash.”Her gentle reassurance only made my heart ache more. All the grief I had held back for so long finally crumbled, and I broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.Sophie cried too. Her quiet sobs filled the sterile room.It took us half an hour to pull ourselves together. However, I was not letting this go.“Sophie, I suddenly feel like having that steak

I screamed, yanking myself free with so much force that I slammed hard onto the floor. However, Raine did not show a shred of concern. Instead, he stepped right over my wrist without hesitation. His voice was cold and sharp.“Now. You are coming with me to Central Medical Center, and you are going to apologize to Lisa!”He grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the door without mercy. My knuckles scraped along the floor, leaving a trail of blood behind me, but he did not even blink. Our son stood at the doorway, keeping his head down. His eyes were distant and unfamiliar.“Mom, why do you always have to go against everyone?“If you don’t say sorry to Aunt Lisa today, Dad and I… we won’t forgive you.”My inner wolf was collapsing, faster and faster. Pain raged through my mind like wildfire. I could not hear anything clearly anymore.Raine dumped me at the doors of Central Medical Center.“You stay right here. You are not going in until Lisa wakes up, and you apologize.”My cons
