Chapter 2

Author: Evening Breeze Tales
Ann was left stunned for a couple beats, but soon frowned. "Just because I invited Martin to our table? Even jealousy should follow reason, don't you think? Or is it that bad to buy a man who saved my life dinner, too?"

As I hung my head in silence, her tone softened. "Look, I might have been a little inconsiderate tonight, but I'll make another reservation next week. Just the two of us, okay?"

As she spoke, she reached out to hold my hand. "It's the feeling of owing that ties me to Martin. That won't hurt our relationship."

Her palm felt warm like always, but I can't feel an ounce of sentiment.

I glanced at the white camellias that had stayed by her feet when she was with me for seven years. They were nothing but dried branches now.

Suddenly, I don't even feel the strength to argue.

"Yeah. I was being paranoid."

Ann sighed in relief like she always did, thinking that it's over just like every other argument.

After getting home, she headed straight to her study.

I waited until I heard her door close, then locked myself in my bedroom before whipping out my phone to call my lawyer, Max. "Please help me draft a divorce agreement."

After hanging up, I tapped into a plane ticket app and booked a flight to New Zulu after five days.

Before Mom died, she bought me an apartment in Areston and an inheritance that only has my name on it. She said that it's so I always have a place to go even if my marriage turns unhappy.

I was convinced I'd never need it.

As the next afternoon arrived, a certain social media post hit trending.

[Scandalous! Liston Corp CEO goes on date with savior!]

Attached to it were photos of Martin and Ann leaving the restaurant, along with accusations that he was using a life debt to sabotage a married woman's marriage.

Soon, he was doxed.

Ann was frighteningly cold when she entered the room. "Did you upload that post?"

I put down my book and replied, "No."

Even so, she stared at me in disappointment. "You're the only one who knew Martin was with me. I know you're upset, but he's a doctor. Don't you understand that reputation matters a lot to him?"

I raised a brow.

Three years ago, my studio had been framed for plagiarism.

Ann didn't even look at evidence as she announced in front of cameras that she trusts me, her husband. I really thought that she would trust me without hesitation no matter what happens.

As it turned out, that trust had an expiry date.

"So in your mind, I'm that sinister?" I asked quietly.

Ann was silent for a moment, but soon snorted. "Delete the post and apologize to Martin. Then we can put this behind us."

I simply smiled silently. Her phone rang, shattering the suffocating silence.

It was her assistant, Bob.

"The police made an arrest. It's a woman, an admirer of Dr. Irwin. He rejected her, so she stalked him for days and took photos to spread those rumors."

Ann was still standing by the doorway as she hung up, the look on her face now clearly uncomfortable.

Eventually, she said, "I jumped to conclusions… Martin just survived an avalanche. I don't think he could survive the flaming."

She was still on Martin's side even though she was apologizing.

I didn't expose her, instead handing her the documents I had on hand. "I'm buying a studio in Areston. I need you to sign off on it."

Ann took the papers and had barely reached page two when her phone rang again.

It was Martin, complaining about journalists camping outside his house and preventing him from getting home.

Her tone grew at once soft as she reassured him, while swiftly signing the column I highlighted.

"You like it, then you can have it," she said, sliding back the papers to me. "Like I said before, I can get you anything you want. Don't push me with that divorce talk again."

I waited until she left before taking out the thin stack of divorce papers, where Ann's name was written clear and sharp on the last page.

Taking photos for further proof, I looked outside at the darkening skies.

Patience.

In just five days, I would be gone.

  • Her Rose Bloomed Elsewhere   Chapter 22

A year later, my studio held an anniversary exhibition. In the rebuilt greenhouse were Mom's flower catalogs, miniatures of my work, and the concepts planned for the new year.Even the broken camellia plant was blooming, its new branches spreading diagonally while the snapped edges remained out in the open, never concealed. The gardener said it would look different, but would still gain a new tree crown.I brushed my fingers over the snapped edge, feeling for the first time that it wasn't all that scary. There were just three little flowers so far, but that delighted me more than any other flower.Mom's old friend was almost crying in front of it. "She would definitely be proud of you if she was still here with us."I looked up at the sun through the glass roof, replying quietly, "She will see it."Wilma was busy mingling with guests after the exhibition was over. When a journalist asked when our wedding was, she turned to me, asking permission instead of announcing it right aw

Six months later, Wilma proposed to me.The studio happened to be the busiest at the time, and she stayed to clean up the specimens all over my desk after checking through the last batch of materials with me.When everyone else left, she presented me with a simple cardboard box. There was neither pomp nor circumstance. The ring was simply offered during a working day, after working hours. She smiled. "You can take your time to consider. It won't affect the meeting tomorrow even if you say no."I laughed in amusement and held out my hand. "In that case, let's make sure the meeting goes well tomorrow."She paused for a second, and slid the ring through my finger.-After word spread, Ann visited Areston again, with Max asking beforehand if I wanted to turn her away.I glanced at the ring on my finger, and decided to agree to see her; not out of sentiment, but it was only right to clear the air when a relationship had run its course.Ann invited me to the beach cafe we often wen

On the third day of her hospitalization, I brought soup to visit Wilma. She was sitting up and answering emails, but she shut her laptop when she saw me come in. "The doctor told you to focus on resting," I said as I put the soup on the overtable. "I'll take your laptop away if you keep working.""Yes, sir," she replied, smiling. After drinking half of it, she suddenly put down her spoon and looked into my eyes. "Sean… You don't have to worry too much about that night."Though I frowned, she continued, "Saving the catalog is my own choice. You owe me nothing, and you don't have to date me out of gratitude."That left me stunned.Since Martin saved Ann in that avalanche, she couldn't stop talking about it and always agreed to anything he asked. In time, that gratitude became tolerance, and that tolerance became feelings out of lines.Wilma got hurt for my sake, but the first thing she did was to play down that debt.My lips thinned. "What if I never date you?"She was silent

A rare storm hit Areston just before spring, and the studio alarm was blaring in the middle of the night.By the time I arrived, one side of the glass walls had shattered from the violent gale, and rainwater was pouring inside.Mom's catalog and our design drafts were still in there.Just as I was about to charge inside, Wilma caught me. "Stay out! The glass could collapse any moment!" "The catalog! It's in the basement…""I'll get them!" She called maintenance to cut the power and had the staff move the catalogs and journals near the entrance. Then she tied a safety rope around her waist before heading further inside. As the storm and rain kept pelting the greenhouse, I stood outside the police line, watching as the roof glass cracked further."Come out, Wilma!" I cried. She soon appeared with a large plastic box in hand, when a chunk of glass snapped off and crashed down beside her. She managed to dodge to the side, but the shards caught her arm. Her blood rapidly dyed her

Wilma and I started dating. The first time we had dinner together, she booked a seat at my favorite restaurant. When I had to call it off to adjust our proposal, she quietly changed the date without arguing. The second date was at an art exhibition, when a client suddenly called. She simply followed me back to the studio, waiting until past midnight. As for the third date, she ran late due to a project meeting. However, she didn't try to play it down with flowers or gifts, instead solemnly explaining why and properly apologized. She even freed up the next afternoon, and it was up to me whether I'd go on a date with her. Those things seemed almost trivial, but it also slowly taught me that stability wasn't the lack of mistakes. It was about accepting responsibility after the mistake; not avoiding it, and certainly not letting the other person suffer the grief alone. She never mentioned what she sacrificed for me, and she certainly didn't demand that I return the same favor.Nonet

  • Her Rose Bloomed Elsewhere   Chapter 17

Before winter, Wilma and I went to an island down south to look for white camellias.Mom had noted down in her catalog that the white camellia was acquired from a botanist who lived there, but we still had to travel between several towns and villages to finally find the old plant nursery. The owner showed me letters she exchanged with Mom, pointing at the part where Mom asked if white camellias would survive in foreign soil. Towards the end, she said that if I ever came back to New Zulu, she wanted a place for me where flowers bloomed.I held the letter in silence for a long while.Mom never saw me again, but she already prepared a way home for me years ago.And today, the seeds of a fresh start were sowed.Wilma never said anything, merely standing quietly by my side, waiting for me to fix everything by my own.The owner gave me a young sprout, but it could only be transplanted in spring.Nonetheless, on the way back, it snowed and the car broke down. Wilma went out to check w
