"Hungry?" he asked, glancing over at me. "We could get something to eat before we head home."

I nodded, suddenly aware of the hollow feeling in my stomach. I'd been so focused on the interview that I'd forgotten to eat since breakfast. "Starving, actually."

"There's that Italian place you like near the beach house." Hunter's lips curved into a smile. "One with garlic bread you'd kill for."

"Perfect." I squeezed his hand. "The babies want pasta."

Hunter chuckled, the sound warming me from the inside. "Already using the twins to get what you want, I see."

"It's a mother's prerogative," I teased back, resting my hand on my still-flat stomach. I couldn't feel them yet, but having the images of them made it more real.

The restaurant was half-empty when we arrived, the early dinner crowd not yet filtering in. The hostess seated us at a quiet corner table, away from the few other diners. Hunter requested it specifically, giving us privacy.

"You did well today," he said after we'd ordered, hi

  • Her Sister’s Surrogate   Chapter One Hundred-Thirteen

One Week laterI adjusted the necklace around my neck, it felt too tight as I checked my reflection for the fifth time. This was our first public appearance as a couple since Mom's arraignment, where she'd pleaded not guilty to all charges, just as Quinn had predicted. Tonight's charity gala for children's cancer research was important to Hunter, the Sinclair family was the main sponsor, but my nerves had nothing to do with the cause and everything to do with being on display. Things had been easier at the office, but the public were different."You look beautiful," Hunter said, appearing behind me in the mirror. His hands settled on my shoulders, warm and reassuring. "Stop worrying." Then he kissed my bare shoulder.I smoothed down the midnight blue gown I'd chosen carefully, elegant but understated, the empire waistline giving no hint of my still-flat stomach. At twelve weeks, I wasn't showing yet, but the dress would hide our secret either way. Only family knew about the twins."Wha

The next morning, I woke to Hunter's arm draped possessively over my waist, his breath warm against my neck. For a moment, I let myself drift in that hazy space between sleep and waking, content to just exist in this bubble with him.Until I remembered. My mother's arrest. The interview. The press. The story would be out by now. We would see if Quinn was right about the reporter.I carefully extracted myself from Hunter's embrace, sliding out of bed. He stirred but didn't wake, his face peaceful in sleep. I grabbed my robe slipped it over my naked body and tiptoed out of the bedroom, my stomach already churning with anxiety. In the kitchen, I made tea first, then checked the time. Just past seven. Early enough that the morning papers would be delivered but not so early that the full online media cycle had kicked in.I found Hunter's tablet on the counter and hesitated before unlocking it. Did I really want to know? Could I face whatever they'd written about us, about me?Before I could

I followed Hunter out of the car, hand pressed to my stomach as if the two tiny lives inside needed protection from the news vans already clustered at the entry of the parking lot, four security guards keeping them back."Head up," Hunter murmured, his arm firm around my waist as security kept them back. "Don't give them anything."Reporters shouted questions, cameras flashed, but all I registered was the reassuring pressure of Hunter's hand guiding me forward. The lift doors closed behind us with a whisper, silencing the shouts."You okay?" Hunter studied my face as we waited for the elevator to reach our floor."I'm fine." I straightened my shoulders. "I refuse to hide like I've done something wrong."His eyes softened, pride warming his gaze. "That's why I love you."It made my heart flutter. I leaned against him, drawing strength from his solid presence."Quinn says the reporter will be here at four," Hunter said, checking his phone. "Your father confirmed he'll join us. We tell o

Grace's POV"Do you want to see her?" he asked quietly when I didn't move straight away. "Your mother. I would understand if you did. We could go there first."The question caught me off guard. I'd been so focused on Dad, on how this would affect him, that I hadn't even considered whether I wanted to face Margo. Whether I needed to."I don't know," I admitted. "Should I?"Hunter's thumb traced across my knuckles where our hands were joined. "There's no should about it, Grace. It's entirely up to you. There is no wrong or right answer."I stared down at our linked fingers, thinking. Part of me felt like I should want to see her, to try one last time to understand why she'd done what she'd done. But the larger part, the part that had been ground down by years of her criticism and manipulation, felt nothing but exhaustion at the thought."Do you think it's a good idea?" I asked.Hunter shrugged, his expression carefully neutral. "Might be the closure you need so we can move on. But the c

Hunter's POVI was in the kitchen making eggs when my phone rang. Morrison's name flashed on the screen, and my stomach tightened. Grace was still asleep upstairs, and I wanted to keep it that way, at least until I knew what this call was about."Morrison," I answered, keeping my voice low."Mr. Sinclair, I'm calling to let you know we've just arrested Margo Wilson."I paused, setting down the spatula. "When?""About an hour ago. She's being processed now. Thought you and Mrs. Sinclair should know before it hits the news."I exhaled slowly. It was expected, but hearing it confirmed still felt like a punch to the gut. For Grace's sake."Thank you for the heads up," I said."There's one more thing. Your father-in-law asked us to call you and let you know. He'd like to speak with Grace when she's ready."Poor John. This was going to destroy what was left of his campaign, but he'd made his choice. He had stayed with Margo instead of leaving her years ago."I'll let her know," I said. "Tha
