Chapter 5

作者: Anonymous
And now, Maeve was the one saying, "At your age, honestly—who else would want you if you leave me?"

My face went dark with hurt.

Johnny held Maeve's hand, his face full of self-reproach.

Watching the two of them so close, my heart died completely. I clenched my jaw and turned to leave—to get out of that suffocating place.

But Maeve called out to me. Her eyes darted away, as if she couldn't quite meet my gaze.

I stopped, waiting to hear what she had to say.

She hesitated for a long moment, then finally spoke. "Ed, could you donate one of your kidneys to Johnny?"

At her words, my heart flatlined.

I let out a bitter, helpless laugh. I should have known better. Even now, after everything, I was still foolish enough to hope.

When she saw that I wasn't agreeing right away—the way I used to, always saying yes to whatever she asked—Maeve grew anxious. "Johnny saved my life once. Now, he's sick. You should help him—for my sake. If it weren't for Johnny, I'd be dead."

I blinked in confusion.

Maeve and I had been together for fifteen years. I had no idea when Johnny had ever saved her life.

Seeing my puzzled look, Maeve grew annoyed.

But she still explained, impatiently, "Three months ago, I was out and got kidnapped by human traffickers. Johnny risked his life to rescue me."

I was completely stunned. Because the person who had rescued her three months ago was me—not Johnny.

That day, Maeve and I had argued. She stormed out of the house in a rage.

I was worried she might be in danger, so I chased after her—only to see her get knocked unconscious and dragged into a van.

I followed the kidnappers all the way to an abandoned factory. After calling the police, I couldn't bear to leave her in there alone. Before the cops arrived, I tried to get inside to stay with her—or better yet, get her out myself.

But there were too many traffickers.

I didn't care if I got hurt, but I was terrified that if I acted recklessly, I'd put Maeve in even greater danger.

Then I noticed the loose soil on the ground. An idea came to me.

I had no tools, so I dug a hole with my bare hands. My fingers were torn raw—down to the bone—but I didn't stop.

Just as I lifted Maeve onto my back, the traffickers spotted us. They beat me within an inch of my life.

Just when I thought it was over, the police arrived and saved us both.

I saw with my own eyes that Maeve was unharmed. Only then did I let myself pass out.

Back then, Maeve and I were already in a rough patch. I didn't want her to feel weighed down by a debt of gratitude toward me. So I never said a word.

But that didn't mean someone else got to steal that credit.

I looked at Maeve and said, "Maeve, it was me who saved you. Not Johnny."

At my words, a flash of anger sparked in her eyes. She cut me off, snapping, "Ed, I didn't think you could sink so low!

"When I woke up, Johnny was the one by my side. Meanwhile, you were off traveling. Tell me—how could you have saved me while you were out of town? If it wasn't Johnny, then who was it?"

I was speechless.

Back then, my hands had been scraped down to the bone, and my body was covered in bruises from shielding Maeve from the traffickers' blows. I hadn't wanted her to worry, so I told her I'd been on a trip.

And now that lie had become my "alibi."

How ridiculous. But I didn't have the energy to argue anymore.

Maeve stared at me coldly. "I'm asking you—will you donate a kidney to Johnny or not?"

I shook my head. "That was your life he supposedly saved. What does that have to do with me? We're getting divorced."

Maeve's face flushed red with rage. She raised her hand and slapped me hard across the face.

"You heartless bastard! Don't you dare come crying to me later!"

  • Hidden Husband Gets Abandoned   Chapter 11

Maeve and Johnny's wedding was a lavish affair.Almost every prominent figure in the city had been invited. As Anna and I entered the venue, my palms were burning with tension.Anna gave my hand a reassuring pat, signaling me to relax. I thought about the plan we'd put in place, and a measure of calm settled over me.Anna said softly, "Don't worry. I'll protect you."I paused for a moment.Suddenly, I was transported back to childhood—when Anna would step in front of me whenever I was being bullied by other kids, beat them up soundly, and then turn to me with a bruised and swollen face, grinning as she said, "Don't worry. I'll protect you."My heart tightened with a dull ache. For Maeve's sake, I had distanced myself from Anna for fifteen years. Now, looking at Anna, all I felt was guilt. She had never married all these years—instead, she'd traveled the world. I knew she was waiting for me, but I never dared to give her any response.I had already lost the right to love anyon

Another month passed.Maeve finally signed the divorce papers and had them sent over to me.On the day we went to the courthouse to finalize the divorce, the sun was blazing bright.I looked at the sunlight pouring over the ground and vaguely remembered that the day we'd gotten our marriage license had been just as beautiful. It felt fitting, in a way. Everything had come full circle.Maeve looked at me and said flatly, "From now on, we have nothing to do with each other."I gave a bitter smile. Not far away, Anna waved at me enthusiastically. I looked at her radiant smile, picked up my pace, and walked over to her.Anna took my hand and held it firmly. She had been by my side the entire time. With her company, I had slowly started to heal from the pain. I could even face Maeve without falling apart. But Maeve didn't like seeing Anna and me so close. She snapped, "Ed, are you really that desperate to run off with another woman?"I blinked in confusion.Maeve's voice cracked

The engagement between Anna and me had been arranged before either of us was even born.Back then, the Gabehart and the Digby families had agreed that if the children were the same gender, they would become sworn siblings. If they were opposite genders, they would be betrothed. My mother passed away in childbirth. My father was always busy with work and couldn't give me the care I needed. The Gabehart family was in turmoil at the time, with enemies both inside and outside the company, so he didn't dare hire a nanny. And so, I was raised on Anna's mother's breast milk. When I was five, my father passed away, leaving only my old butler behind. Under the Digby family's protection, my butler and I struggled to hold onto what remained of my family's legacy. That lasted until the butler gave his life protecting me.To this day, Anna's parents were the closest thing I had to parents of my own.But back then, I was shattered by the butler's death. I instinctively pushed everyone away, c

I gave a faint, weary smile and coughed a few times. "Long time no see, Anna."Anna Digby's expression softened slightly. She let out a scoff and plopped down on the edge of the bed."If I hadn't happened to pass by, you'd have fried your brain in that rain and turned into a vegetable."What about your wife?"At the mention of Maeve, my heart ached again.Seeing my pale face, Anna wisely dropped the subject and handed me my phone.I turned it on and found several text messages from Maeve. Every single one was accusing me, all because I hadn't apologized to Johnny. In the last message, Maeve wrote: [Ed, get your ass home right now, or we're getting a divorce! I'm throwing all your stuff out!]I thought about it for a long time and decided to go back. Not because Maeve was threatening divorce, but because among my belongings were a few keepsakes from my parents. I needed to retrieve them.Anna was uneasy about me going alone and insisted on coming along. When Maeve saw me, a fl

On the way home, a heavy rain began to pour.I had no umbrella and didn't bother calling a ride. I just walked home through the downpour. As I walked, my mind wandered, filled with nothing but memories of Maeve. Then my phone suddenly rang.I fished it out mechanically. It was Maeve calling.I hesitated for a long time, but in the end, I answered. On the other end, Maeve's voice came through, muffled and indistinct.I listened carefully for a while—but she wasn't speaking to me.My heart sank. I'd thought she actually wanted to say something, but it turned out she'd just dialed by mistake.I was about to hang up when, from the other end of the line, I heard a series of unmistakably intimate sounds. They sent a chill straight through my bones.I wasn't naive or inexperienced. I knew exactly what those sounds meant. But I wished, more than anything, that I were a fool—someone too clueless to understand. I didn't want to know what they were doing on the other end of that call.

I didn't bother responding to Maeve's words. I turned and walked away. Before I left, I glanced at Johnny. His face was plastered with a smug, triumphant grin.Calmly, I said to Maeve, "You should really look into things more carefully. Some people—you can't tell if they're human or snake just by looking at them."At my words, Johnny looked a little guilty.Maeve scoffed. "Don't bother trying to drive a wedge between Johnny and me. He's innocent and pure—unlike you. You've been scheming since childhood, and now you're even a thief who steals credit for saving someone's life."I was completely done.Maeve had forgotten the environment I grew up in. If I hadn't kept my wits about me, those people would have devoured me down to the bone. And now, that was being used as proof of my "devious nature."I suddenly remembered the happiness I'd felt the day Maeve and I got our marriage license. Now, that memory was just a wound in my heart.I shook my head and walked away. Two months la
