The second I stepped onto the set of The Last Ember, every single person turned to look at me. My stomach immediately tightened. The massive soundstage buzzed with controlled chaos. Crew members rushed around carrying lighting equipment. Makeup artists stood near the trailers holding coffee cups and clipboards. Cameras worth millions of dollars. And somehow, despite all the movement around me, it still felt like everybody was staring directly at me. Whispering and judging. The new face of Titan Media. Quinn Cardiff’s mysterious wife. The invisible woman who had somehow transformed into Hollywood’s newest obsession overnight. I swallowed hard and tightened my grip around the script in my hands. Calm down Laura, you are beautiful. No one here comes close, you worked hard for this, bask in it. I kept reassuring myself but it didn't work. Especially not with those tabloids getting more viral every minute. “You okay?” I looked up. Quinn stood beside me wearing a black wool coat over a dark button-up shirt, his tattooed throat partially visible beneath the collar. His sharp blue eyes scanned my face carefully. “I’m fine,” I lied quickly. After all he'd done to make sure I had this? I couldn't disappoint him by letting him know that I couldn't handle it. His expression said he didn’t believe me for even a second. The director suddenly clapped his hands loudly near the cameras. “Places, everyone!” My chest tightened even more. This was it. My first real scene. My first real chance to prove I deserved to be here. Then the director made his way towards me, his clipboard still in his hand. “Ah, the star of the show. You must be Laura, my pleasure to meet you" he gave me quick kisses on both cheeks. “It's a pleasure to meet you too, I can't wait to start" I replied. My voice coming out confident and sure, due to months of training. “Good, good. They'll lead you to your position" he swallowed pointing to a group of people who I assumed were crew members but due to how corporate they were dressed, I put my best bet that they were assistants. I followed one of the assistants toward the set, my heels clicking nervously against the polished floor. The entire scene had been built to look like a luxury hotel lobby. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead while fake marble pillars surrounded the center staircase. And standing near the cameras already in costume was my co-star. Damien Cross. One of the biggest actors in Hollywood. Tall. Blonde. Beautiful. The kind of man magazines called heartbreakingly handsome. His eyes landed on me instantly. Then he smiled politely. “Laura,” he greeted smoothly, holding out his hand. “Nice to finally meet you, Quinn has said wonderful things about you.” I shook it quickly. “You too.” My palms were sweating, I only hoped he wouldn't notice. “You nervous?” Damien asked quietly. “A little.” “That’s normal.” He leaned slightly closer. “Half the people here are terrified of Quinn, not you.” A nervous laugh escaped me before I could stop it. “Ready for rehearsal!” the assistant director shouted. Everyone immediately moved faster. I walked toward my mark on the floor, trying not to think about the hundreds of eyes watching me. This was everything I ever wanted. So why did I suddenly feel like that insecure girl again? The girl who couldn’t fit into designer gowns. The girl Hemsworth hid from cameras. The girl people laughed at. “Quiet on set!” The room instantly fell silent. My heartbeat pounded loudly inside my ears. The director pointed toward me. “Laura, remember, your character just discovered Damien betrayed her. You’re angry, but underneath that anger, she still loves him. Got it?” I nodded quickly. “Good. Cameras rolling!” The giant camera moved toward us. My mouth suddenly went dry. “Action!” Damien stepped toward me perfectly, completely in character already. “You should’ve trusted me,” he said sharply. That was my cue. I opened my mouth but nothing came out. My mind went completely blank. The silence stretched horribly across the set. Crew members exchanged looks. My heart dropped straight into my stomach. “I...” My voice cracked. “I’m sorry.” The director sighed loudly. “It’s okay,it's just rehearsal” he said, although he didn’t sound okay. “Let’s reset.” Embarrassment burned through my body. Why was this happening? I forced myself to breathe as makeup artists rushed toward me to touch up my face. Around me, whispers quietly started spreading. “She’s nervous.” “I heard she’s never acted before.” “Titan really risked everything on her.” “I thought Quinn Cardiff only hired professionals.” Every word felt like a knife sliding under my skin. I stared down at the floor, pretending not to hear them. Maybe they were right. Maybe I didn’t belong here. Maybe this whole transformation was just not worth it. “Ready again!” the director called. I stepped back onto my mark. My hands were shaking now. “Action!” Damien delivered his line flawlessly again. “You should’ve trusted me.” “I did trust you,” I replied too quickly. “That’s why this hurts so much.” Wrong line. Completely wrong line. The script supervisor immediately lowered her pen. The director rubbed a stressed hand down his face. A few people in the background actually laughed quietly. Humiliation crashed into me so hard my eyes started burning. “I’m sorry,” I whispered again. My eyes searched the small crowd for Quinn but he wasn't there. I was all in my own. The murmuring got louder this time. “This is a disaster.” “Did Quinn push her too fast?” I suddenly couldn’t breathe properly. Every insecurity I thought I buried over the last seven months came rushing back all at once. Too awkward. Too emotional. Too inexperienced. Not enough. Never enough. “Take five,” the director said tightly. I turned quickly before anyone could see the tears gathering in my eyes. But the second I stepped away from the cameras, Quinn appeared directly in front of me, I nearly jumped because I hadn't seen him there. God. Had he been here all along to witness my terrible fail? “Laura.” “I can’t do this,” I whispered shakily. “They were right. I don’t belong here.” “Yes, you do.” “No, Quinn, listen to them.” My voice cracked painfully. “They think I’m a joke.” His expression hardened instantly. “I don’t care what they think.” “But I forgot my lines.” “You forgot two lines,” he corrected calmly. “That doesn’t make you a failure.” I looked away from him, ashamed. Quinn stepped closer. Then, very gently, he took my hand. Just firmly enough to steady me. “Look at me,” he said quietly. I forced myself to. His blue eyes held mine completely. “You survived Hemsworth Deluca,” Quinn murmured. “A movie set should not scare you more than that man did.” A weak breath escaped me. “You are not the girl he destroyed anymore, Laura.” Something inside my chest loosened slightly. Around us, the crew kept moving nervously, pretending not to watch. Quinn squeezed my hand once before letting go. “Take a breath,” he said softly. “Then go remind them why I chose you.” I closed my eyes briefly. One breath. Then another. When I opened them again, Quinn nodded toward the cameras. I turned and walked back onto the set. This time, my steps felt steadier. “Ready?” the director asked carefully. I lifted my chin. “Ready.” Behind the monitors, Quinn’s phone buzzed. His expression darkened slightly as he glanced at the screen. A man wearing editing headphones stood near the back exit of the soundstage. Quinn walked toward him quietly. “I need your help with something,” Quinn said in a low voice. The tech editor frowned slightly. “With what?” Quinn’s eyes flicked briefly toward me. Then back to him. “Meet me outside.”.Laura's pov The kitchen smelled like bananas, cinnamon, and something warm I couldn't quite name.I stood beside Riley with flour dusted across the front of my shirt, staring suspiciously at the bowl in front of me."Are you sure this is supposed to look like that?" I asked.Riley glanced into the bowl. "It looks fine.""It looks like cement.""That's because you mixed it too much.""I did what you told me to do.""I told you to fold it.""I folded it.""You attacked it."I laughed.JJ was sitting on the kitchen counter, swinging his little legs while watching us work. Every few seconds, he reached for a banana on the counter until Riley slapped his hand away."Mommy, I'm hungry," he complained."The bread isn't ready.""I can eat the banana.""That's for the bread."He looked at me. "Can I eat your banana?"I laughed. "I think your mom has made it very clear that nobody is eating those bananas."He sighed dramatically and dropped his head.Riley shook her head. "Don't encourage him.
Quinn's pov The first thing I did that morning was check my phone.Nothing.No missed calls. No messages. No update from the security team.Laura was still gone.I stared at her name on my screen for longer than I should have. Her contact was still there even though every call I made went straight to voicemail. I had lost count of how many times I had called her since she disappeared.Too many.I locked the phone and dropped it onto the desk.I had barely slept.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Laura walking away from me. Sometimes she looked angry. Sometimes she looked hurt. Sometimes she looked at me with the same disappointment I had seen in her eyes before she left. And sometimes I imagined finding her.Not because I wanted to drag her back. Not because I wanted to force her into a life she had already decided to escape.I just wanted to know she was safe.My phone vibrated.I picked it up immediately. It wasn't Laura. It was the head of security.I answered. "What do you have?
Laura's pov I woke up the next morning with one thought sitting stubbornly in my head.Riley.I needed to find her that morning.Yesterday, I had walked away from her without properly explaining myself. I kept thinking about the way she had smiled when she heard about my pregnancy, the way she had talked about our children growing up together as though the future was something bright and ordinary. So, after getting dressed, I decided to apologize.I remembered Riley showing me her house during our little tour. It wasn't far from the ice cream stand, along a quieter street lined with small homes. For the first few minutes, I felt strangely hopeful. Then I bumped into someone. My shoulder hit a hard chest, and I stepped back."Excuse me," I said quickly. "I'm sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going."The man didn't answer. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed completely in black. There was something unsettling about his face. His expression was unreadable, his eyes sharp, and t
Quinn's POVI missed her.It was a simple thought, but it had become impossible to escape.I missed Laura.I missed hearing her voice. I missed seeing her walk into a room and immediately make me forget whatever I had been doing. I missed the little things I used to take for granted because I had been too stupid to understand how easily I could lose them.Three days.Three days without knowing where she was.Three days of waking up and reaching for my phone before remembering that there would be no message from her.I couldn't do it anymore.I had told myself I would wait.I would let Laura come to me when she was ready. I would give her the space she had asked for. I would respect her decision, even if every part of me wanted to chase after her.But something had changed. She was pregnant. She was alone. And Hemsworth was out there looking for her.I didn't know what he was capable of anymore. That thought was enough to make me stand."I have to find her," I said. The words sounded s
Laura's POVI sat on the edge of the bed, staring at my phone.Baxter was calling.I watched his name flash across the screen until it disappeared.I didn't answer.A few seconds later, the phone went quiet.I felt something twist painfully inside me.Why had everything happened this way?I lowered my phone and stared at the floor.I was pregnant.I was carrying a child, and somehow I still couldn't bring myself to feel happy about it.That was the part that hurt the most.I felt like I should be excited. I should be thinking about tiny clothes, names, little hands, and what the baby would look like. Instead, every thought about my pregnancy seemed to come with another problem attached to it.Quinn.Anto.Hemsworth.The accident. The rumors. My career. My marriage.Everything.I covered my face with both hands. The tour had helped, at least for a little while. Walking around Dewdrop with Riley had made me laugh. It had reminded me that there was a world outside the mess I had left beh
Hemsworth's POVI was trending again.Of course I was.My name had been everywhere for the past few days, attached to every headline I didn't want to read. Some called me desperate. Others called me obsessive. A few had gone even further, dragging my marriage, Ember's fake pregnancy, Laura's disappearance, and Anto 's accident into the same conversation.I hated all of it.I sat on my couch with a glass of whiskey in my hand, staring at the television while another entertainment channel discussed me like I wasn't sitting right there.I picked up the remote and switched it off.The room went silent.I should have been relieved.Instead, I felt trapped with my own thoughts.Laura.Everything kept coming back to Laura.Three days. She had been gone for three days, and nobody knew where she was.I'd hired someone to find her. I'd contacted lawyers. I'd tried the authorities. I'd called anyone I thought might know something.Nothing.I needed another option. Her father.I stared at my phon

LauraThe first thing I felt was the scent. It didn't smell like the sterile, bleach-heavy air of a hospital. It smelled like expensive oud, aged whiskey, and something dangerously masculine.I blinked my eyes open. The ceiling was charcoal grey, accented with soft, recessed LED lighting."You're a

Hold still, Laura. You’re wrinkling the lapel."Hemsworth slapped my hand away from his chest.
