Chapter 3: Under Fluorescent Light

The days after seemed to be running together. At the same time, Rae just kept on smiling. She was feeling over the moon inside. Yet, in the back of her mind, she knew she needed to keep things a secret. She didn’t want anything to get ruined. She wanted to enjoy the moments when they were together. She knew she was going to have to hold it down for as long as she could. Each night they would text each other good night.

One Saturday, Rae and Samantha were working the truck, when all of a sudden, Rae was picked up in the air. She started looking around and was wondering who had picked her up. When she got to the ground she saw Mason. She was about to swing on him. She stopped for a second. She realized she was at work and thought she better not. She asked him what he was doing there. She was thinking he was going to give a silly answer.

“I need supplies. I figured I would come here. Not to mention, I get to mess with you for a little while.”

“Of course you did. Don’t you have anything else you could be doing right now?”

“Yeah…. Nope.”

Samantha started laughing. She was getting a kick out of them going back and forth. She looked from Rae to Mason. She thought they were so cute. Samantha and Rae worked as Mason kept picking at Rae. Rae was looking steaming mad. On the inside, she wanted to jump up and kiss him. She knew she didn't have the guts to do it. She decided to throw comments back at him. They went on for what seemed to be an hour.

Samantha was enjoying every minute of it. When Mason left, they finished the truck and started their normal obligations. Samantha and Rae got everything knocked out. Throughout the rest of the day, Rae thought about Mason. She knew the banter was going to keep going. She knew it was their secret weapon to make sure everyone in town doesn't ask about them being back together. Rae started laughing.

Once 4 O’clock hit, Rae was happy to leave. She clocked put so quickly you thought she was going somewhere. In turn, she was just going home. When she got home, she showered and got into her pajamas. Around 7pm, she had a knock on the door. She was wondering who would be coming over. When she looked through the peephole she saw Mason. She started blushing, and then opened the door.

“What brings you by?”

“ I have been thinking about you all day. I had to come and see you.”

She let him in and locked the door. She didn't know what to do first. She didn't know if she should kiss him or hug him. Within the next few moments, they were just holding each other, staring into each other's eyes. When they let go, Rae asked Mason if he wanted a drink. He shook his head no and went and sat on the couch. He waited for her to come from the kitchen. Rae was stressed. She finally got the moment she wanted, but she was stiff.

“Come here a minute please.”

“What's up?”

“I want to stare at you under this fluorescent light. I want you.”

Rae busted out a huge smile on her face. She was glad he felt the same way. She knew she was going to have to take things slow though. Rae sat down and looked at Mason. She wanted to make sure he was serious.

“I'm serious. I know I have to give you some time. I'm willing to wait for you. I am not going anywhere this time.”

In that very moment, Rae froze. She was blown away by what she just heard. Mason wrapped his arms around her and gave her a big squeeze. He wanted her to know it was real and he could feel it too. For the next two hours, they sat on the couch in pure silence. Rae was looking like she was staring into space. Mason and Rae ended up curled together on the couch. Rae was snuggled up on his chest.
