Chapter 6

Author: Scarlett Leaves
The one who pushed the door open was the Don of the Falcone family, Vincenzo Falcone.

“Rachel,” he said, his tone as polite as a gentleman’s. “If you’re unhappy in the Medici family, the Falcone family will welcome you with open arms.”

I frowned and replied coldly, “I will always be loyal to the Medici family.”

With that, I brushed past him and walked out of the hospital room.

When I returned to the estate, I ran straight into Victor, who had just stepped out of his car, looking travel-worn. His skin had turned bronze, marked by the Mediterranean sun.

The moment he saw me, he pulled me into his arms and apologized quickly, “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I rushed back as fast as I could, but I still couldn’t make it in time to pick you up from the hospital.”

My stomach churned, and I pushed myself out of his embrace.

“Vincenzo came to see me,” I said flatly. “He invited me to join the Falcone family.”

Victor immediately kissed me fiercely, as if trying to swallow me whole.

“That idiot might as well invite me instead,” Victor said, pressing his forehead against mine. “My Rachel will never leave me.”

He gently stroked my back as he added, “I have something to take care of, but I’ve booked us a restaurant for dinner at seven o’clock tonight.”

After Victor left, I returned to my room. I took out the contract he had given me and stared at it blankly. My fingers brushed over my lips, where his taste still lingered. I used to be addicted to it, but now all I wanted was freedom.

So, I took out my phone and called the family lawyer. I was prepared to meet him in person early the next morning. As for Victor’s underground empire, I was going to take it all, quietly.

Maybe out of guilt, Victor reserved a table at one of the most exclusive restaurants to have dinner with me that night. He tried hard to keep the conversation going, but I responded with cold indifference. The warmth between us faded, little by little, until only silence remained. It was so quiet that I could clearly hear the knife slicing through tender steak, like it was cutting into my own flesh.

After dinner, Victor received a phone call. Then, he turned to me apologetically.

“Sweetheart, Nazzolini’s wife is here demanding an explanation. I have to deal with it. I’ll have someone drive you home.”

“No need,” I said with a smile. “The night is beautiful. I’ll walk.”

Victor kissed my cheek, looking regretful, and left in a hurry.

On my way home, a damp cloth with a sharp, chemical smell was suddenly pressed tightly over my nose and mouth before everything went black. When I woke up, I was in a dim room. Sophia was also there, bound beside me.

When Vincenzo saw I was awake, he pulled out his phone and made a call.

“You got the photos, right? Rachel and Sophia are both in my hands.”

There was a brief silence on the other end before Victor’s voice came through.

“State your terms.”

“I can return them both to you unharmed, but I want Brooklyn and Miami.”

After a pause, Victor replied, “Not possible. You can only choose one.”

Vincenzo met my eyes, and his lips curved into a knowing smile.

“Fine,” he said. “I’ll take Miami, but business should be fair, and you’ll only get to choose one woman as well.”

As silence fell, my heart pounded violently. I already knew what his answer would be.

Finally, Victor spoke, “I choose Sophia.”

In that instant, my heart sank.

Vincenzo chuckled. “Very well. Have a pleasant evening.”

After hanging up, he ordered his men to send Sophia back. Then, he walked over to me, crouched down, and untied my restraints. He extended his hand.

“My offer still stands.”

I narrowed my eyes but said nothing.

He smiled faintly, then stood up and spoke as if thinking out loud. “You started working for the Medici family at fifteen, and in just six years, you’ve expanded their territory threefold. After you went to prison, Victor lost half his territory, and only after you got out did you help him win it all back.”

He clicked his tongue and suddenly burst into laughter. He laughed so hard that tears formed at the corners of his eyes.

“Yet, that idiot Victor kept the box and threw away the Christmas gift himself,” he sneered and shook his head mockingly. “Rachel, he’s not worth your loyalty.”

He extended his hand again.

“I want you as my blade, and my patience is limited.”

I shook my head. “I refuse to join the Falcone family.”

Vincenzo’s sharp gaze swept across my face.

“I have a better idea.”

I smiled as I reached into my bag and took out the ring that symbolized the Donna, placing it in his palm.

“You can tell Victor this,” I said, locking eyes with him.

My voice was soft, but every word was clear.

“Tell him I’m dead.”

[Rachel’s POV] Vincenzo invited me to the East Coast, saying we needed to discuss an alliance. This time, I did something unusual. Instead of taking a helicopter, I boarded a train alone. Not long after I sat down, a man wearing a cap and sunglasses took the seat across from me.He spoke first. “Don’t look at me. Just read a book.”I opened a book and replied quietly, “Victor, I told you I don’t want to see you again.”Victor gave a bitter smile. “I know. You’d only agree to meet me for the sake of the family.”“Is the information you gave me true?” I paused, then spoke with a voice as sharp as tempered steel, “Is Vincenzo planning to ambush me on the East Coast?”“Yes. Every word is true, Rachel. I would never lie to you…” His voice dropped. “At least not now, and never again.”I glanced at him quickly. Even behind the sunglasses, I could almost see the regret in his eyes.“Why does Vincenzo want me dead?”“Because he wants to swallow the Medici family’s territory.” He pres

Vincenzo sat on the sofa, studying me with a playful, almost mocking look. Sophia stood behind him, gently massaging his shoulders. My drunken haze seemed to have cleared as my eyes were frighteningly sharp now. After all, I had once been the Don of the Medici family. In an instant, everything clicked; this had all been Vincenzo’s setup.“So, Sophia was someone you deliberately sent to get close to me.”I had returned to my former composure, calm and unhurried. I raised a hand toward the guards watching me.“A glass of ice water.”Vincenzo gave a small nod, and a guard handed the glass over.I took a sip before continuing, “Finding a woman who looks so similar to Rachel must’ve taken some effort.”“But it was worth it,” Vincenzo admitted with a nod. “Everyone knows that Don Medici is deeply in love with Rachel.”I pointed at Sophia and said, “You cut off my right hand, Rachel, and replaced her with this b*tch, making her the Medici family’s Donna. Given enough time, everything

[Victor’s POV]After finishing my second bottle of whiskey, I was drunk. The pain from my severed fingers on my left hand seemed numbed by the alcohol, but the pain in my heart only grew. With a creak, the door was pushed open. I suddenly sat upright. I struggled to my feet and reached out carefully, as if touching a fragile illusion that might shatter at any moment. My voice came out in broken fragments. “Rachel… you’re back…”“Darling, what’s wrong with you?”A familiar voice answered me, and cracks spread through the illusion like a spiderweb. I stopped in my tracks and looked at Rachel, uncertain.“It’s me!” The familiar voice was now tinged with tears. “Your wife, Sophia!”Sophia. The name hit like a hammer, shattering the illusion completely. Rachel’s face dissolved into nothingness, replaced by Sophia’s, who looked similar, yet unmistakably her own. The light in my eyes went out, and a bitter taste rose in my throat. I gagged, covering my mouth, and waved weakly.“Just…

I led everyone back to the meeting hall of the estate. It used to be Victor’s palace, but now, it would become the courtroom where he would be judged.I took the main seat, while the elders sat on both sides. Victor stood alone below us, like a beast stripped of its teeth and claws.“Public matters before private ones. Leonardo, you go first.”My voice echoed through the vast hall.Leonardo stepped forward and began reading out Victor’s charges. “Victor Medici, for rejecting the Donna due to her past imprisonment and publicly going against his own vows; that is betrayal. When Elder Nazzolini raised a reasonable objection regarding the choice of Donna, Victor Medici abused his authority as Don and shot him on the spot; that is brutality. When Vincenzo fabricated news of the Donna’s death, Victor panicked and was completely unable to make rational decisions; that is incompetence.”With every charge Leonardo read, Victor’s face grew paler. However, he never defended himself. He just

“Victor!” Sophia screamed and rushed forward, grabbing his arm tightly. “That b*tch Rachel isn’t dead! She took everything from the family and drove me out–”Before she could finish, Victor shoved her away. Caught off guard, Sophia fell hard. Her forehead slammed against a stone by the roadside, and blood immediately started pouring out.“Shut your filthy mouth!” Victor snarled, his tone vicious. “Rachel is the Donna of the Medici family. Who do you think you are to insult her?”Sophia clutched her bleeding forehead and let out a twisted laugh. “Idiot! You have nothing left! Check it if you don’t believe me!”Victor frowned and pulled out his phone. He accessed the family’s encrypted accounts, but the number on the screen looked almost ridiculous. He only had fifteen dollars in his account. Victor’s eyes widened in shock, and his hands trembled as he kept checking. Alas, there was nothing. All traces of the funds had been completely erased through offshore accounts. He stood the

When the Maserati came to a stop at the gates of the estate, Leonardo personally stepped forward and opened the car door for me.“Rachel…” A complicated mix of shock, relief, and even regret flashed across his face. In the end, it settled into respect. He lowered his head and spoke again. “Donna Medici, welcome back.”I saw loyalty in his eyes.“Are all the entrances and exits sealed?” I asked as I stepped out of the car.“Everything’s done according to your orders,” he replied and then glanced at me. “There’s just… a small issue. Sophia isn’t very emotionally stable right now.”“Oh?”I raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Then come with me. Let’s go and calm our newly-wedded bride.”When I pushed open the study door, Sophia was sitting behind the massive mahogany desk, her face tense. The family lawyer was explaining something to her. “According to the contract, all Medici assets have been transferred to Ms. Rachel–”Hearing the door, she looked up and saw me. As if the chair ha
