Arielle's POV

I had a plan for Monday morning.

I would walk into the office in flat shoes and a gray jacket. I would say good morning to the receptionist. I would sit at the folding table on the ninth floor and pretend, with every ounce of discipline I owned, that I had not spent Saturday night lying awake, staring at the ceiling, replaying the exact weight of a man's hand against my bare back.

It was a good plan. It lasted eleven minutes.

"Arielle." Ethan met me in the corridor of Wi

  • His Beautiful Deception   The models room

Arielle's POV It was raining when I went to find him. I hadn't planned it. That is what I tell myself now, when I look back. I had left Winslow at eight, meaning to go home, and somewhere on the drive my hands turned the wheel toward the coast road instead. I didn't decide. I only found myself, forty minutes later, parked in the muddy lot behind the resort's site office with the engine ticking and the rain drumming on the roof. There was a single light burning in the window of the long white building. I sat there for a long time. It was foolish. It was reckless. Every sensible piece of me said to turn the key and go home. I had a hundred reasons. I had a mission. I had a man who had shut me out for nine days and who might, at that very moment, be poring over a file with my name on it. I had a box on my shelf and a dead man's signature and a stranger's voice somewhere in the dark. And I had, for the first time in my life, a desire so simple and so terrible that it overwhe

  • His Beautiful Deception   Just go for it

Arielle's POV "Tell me everything," Tiffany said, "and don't leave out the bad parts." She had turned up at my apartment on Friday night with a bottle of red wine, a takeout box of dumplings, and a face full of expectation. Mum was at my aunt's again, and the apartment had the peculiar hush of a place where a person has been alone too long. I let her in without a word. We sat on the sofa. I told her a little. Not the box. Not the mission. But the shape of it, the roof, the almost-kiss, the nine days of silence. She listened with her chin in her hand, her eyes very wide. "He stopped?" "Yes." "On a roof. In the sunset." "Yes." "With his hand on your face." "Tiffany." "I'm just confirming the details." She shook her head slowly. "That's the most romantic thing I've ever heard. And the most infuriating." "He said he couldn't." "Because?" "Because I'd hate him." "Why would you hate him?" "I don't know." "That's suspicious." "That's what I thought." "Me

  • His Beautiful Deception   Unavailable

Arielle's POV For nine days, Alexander Pierce was unavailable. It was the most polite form of cruelty I had ever experienced. He did not shout. He did not send angry messages. He simply vanished behind a wall of secretaries and scheduling conflicts and a small, pleasant, infinitely patient smile from his assistant. "I'm sorry, Ms. Sinclair. Mr. Pierce is in a meeting." "He was in a meeting yesterday." "It's a long meeting." "Daniel." "Yes, Ms. Sinclair?" "Is he avoiding me?" Daniel looked at me with such mild, careful, professional sympathy that I wanted to scream. "Mr. Pierce," he said slowly, "has requested that all communication be routed through this office." "That's not an answer." "It's the only one I am permitted to give." "Permitted by whom?" "By the man who signs my paychecks." I stood in the pristine tenth-floor reception, gripping my folder, and understood that I had lost something. I didn't know what. I only knew that the warmth I had felt o

  • His Beautiful Deception   Cold

Alexander's POV I gave the order at eight o'clock on Monday morning. "Ms. Sinclair's access to the annex is revoked." Daniel looked up from his tablet. He was standing beside my desk, hands folded, in the same gray suit he had worn on Friday. He had not slept well. I could tell from the slight blur behind his glasses. "Revoked, sir?" "Effective immediately." "May I ask why?" "The audit is complete." "Is it?" "For our purposes." He was silent. I did not meet his eyes. I kept mine on the document in front of me, a report from the forensic accountants that I had read three times and could not have summarized. "And the site?" "Marcus will handle daily inspections. Ms. Sinclair will submit her reports through you." "Through me." "Yes." "She will find that unusual." "She'll adapt." "Sir." Daniel's voice was carefully neutral. "On Friday afternoon you took her to the roof." "I did." "You returned alone." I said nothing. "She left the building forty

  • His Beautiful Deception   Almost kiss

Arielle's POV He didn't say a word about it the next day. Or the next. That was the most unnerving part. He greeted me at nine with a cool nod, asked for my progress report, and dismissed me in eleven minutes. Nothing in his face suggested that the night before had happened. Nothing suggested that I had stood in a dim room and offered him my chest and he had refused the knife. Some things aren't kept in files. I heard it in my sleep. It was a message. I was almost sure it was a message. He had looked at me with those steady, unreadable eyes and told me, without telling me, that he knew what I was after. Or part of it. Enough. And he had chosen, for reasons I could not fathom, to let me go on. It made no sense. It made me feel like a woman walking a tightrope in the dark while someone held the other end. On Friday afternoon he found me on the second floor of the east wing. "Come with me." "Where?" "Up." "Up where?" "You'll see." I was on my knees on the roug

  • His Beautiful Deception   The Alert

Alexander's POV The alert had come through at 1:52 in the morning. I was awake. I was always awake at that hour, sitting on the leather sofa in the corner of my office with the lights off and a legal pad on my knee, the city glittering silently beyond the glass. I had a habit of sleeping in the building two or three nights a week. It was not something I discussed. My phone lit up on the arm of the sofa. SECURITY NOTICE. Unauthorized query, restricted directory: R.P. – PERSONAL. User: A. SINCLAIR. Workstation: 9F-ANNEX. Access denied. I read it twice. I did not move. For a long time I sat with the phone in my hand, staring at the small glowing letters, and felt the room grow very cold. R.P. It was my father's folder. I had created it myself, the week he died. I had been twenty-seven years old and hollow with grief, sitting at his desk at three in the morning, sorting through the contents of a life. I had found a locked drawer. I had found a hard drive. I had copied
