Tor POV

"Nah, she and I are done. I just have a lot on my mind lately."

"Good. You should have kicked her to the curb years ago."

She disappears down the hall and comes back with her overnight bag.

"Mom said she'll be here in about an hour. I should get going. The dog was good while you were gone. I wouldn't mind watching him again for you if you need me. I went grocery shopping for you, too. You can't just live on protein powder and fruit, Toren. You have to eat real food."

"Thanks, Tess. I ap

Kyra POVI smile at him as I open the largest box. "You did great, Dad. I made it to eighteen without ever smoking pot, getting drunk, or getting pregnant. And I'm pretty sure I've never told you to go screw yourself. So, job well done.""When you put it that way, I feel like the best father on the planet.""To me you are."Pushing the white tissue paper aside, I pull out a charcoal sketch of Snuggles on canvas. My hand flies to my mouth as I choke back tears."Daddy... oh my God. It's my Snuggles. This means so much to me."In the lower right corner is the signature of my uncle Lukas, and that just makes this even more special. Lukas is an amazing artist."I didn't have any pictures of her so Lukas had to draw her from his memory. I hope it's okay. He said he can fix anything that you'd like changed, or he can start over with a new one.""No," I reply quickly, taking in all the details of the incredibly realistic drawing. Lukas captured her exactly and I wouldn't change a thing. "It

Kyra POVTor ~ age seventeen Aiden ~ age seventeenAiden and I are in his father’s private home studio jamming when Ash drops this huge bomb on me."We're getting married two weeks after we graduate."My hand freezes on my guitar and I stare at him sitting on a stool in front of the mic with a big grin on his face."Married?" I repeat."Yeah. We don't want to wait. And we're going to get a small apartment in town. I already put a deposit down on it. We don't want to live with my parents anymore."I blink at him like he's insane. I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to live here for their entire life. His parents’ house is monstrous, with an indoor and an outdoor pool, sauna, freakin' music studio, and bathroom for every day of the week. Not to mention a refrigerator that's always stocked with food."Ash, you guys are living in a small mansion here. You have your own suite of rooms. You don't even pay rent. Why would you want to move out?""Because my parents are always hovering.

  • His Best Friend's Daughter   chapter fifty Nine

Tor POV That night I had a tattoo appointment with my good friend and artist, Lukas Callis, who also happens to be Aiden's cousin. When he gets me situated in the leather chair in his work area, I hand him the faded piece of paper with the image I want him to do tonight. He looks at it for a few minutes, his black shaggy hair falling over his eyes, then chews his lip ring as he lays the image on his work table. His silence makes me think I made a mistake having him do this one. I should have gone to someone I don’t know to have a picture tattooed on my chest that was drawn by a little girl — especially when that little girl happens to be the tattoo artist’s niece. I'm so fucking stupid. "So, how ya been, man?" he finally asks, leaning over me in the chair. The familiar buzz and burn of the gun starts in my left pec. "Good. Work's been busy so that's always good." He nods. "Same here. Business is going great." "Aiden's been raving about your violin intro on the new CD." "Yeah

Tor POVKyra ~ age thirteen Tor ~ age twenty-eightI glance at the clock again above the fireplace. It's only five minutes later than it was the last time I looked at it, but it feels like an hour has passed. I've been sitting in this chair in Aiden's living room all night, listening to the tick of that clock with one ear and the sound of the door with the other. But there hasn't been a sound at the door, and with each passing minute I'm getting more worried.I call her cell phone again and it goes straight to voicemail. I don't bother leaving a message."Fuck," I mutter, grabbing my car keys off the coffee table. I pull on my sweatshirt as I head for the back door just as she's coming in."Where the hell have you been?" Anger and relief flood through me. "Why didn't you answer your phone?"Her big green eyes widen as she peeks up at me from behind her bangs.I grab her chin and lift her face up into the light. "Are you wearing lipstick? And eyeliner?"She pushes my hand away. "

  • His Best Friend's Daughter   chapter fifty seven

Kyra POVIs it all a matter of social perspective? Is it possible that falling in love doesn't always start when we think it might, and sometimes it starts way before we're ready, and grows slowly over time, allowing two people to truly fall in love with every aspect of each other? Rather than the more typical way of meeting a stranger, being attracted to them first, dating them, having feelings for them, and then hoping they'll like you too and not rip your heart out?I wish I had someone to talk to about all these confusing feelings, but I'm not ready to even attempt to go down that road yet.Grabbing my cell phone, I perch on the edge of my bed and read over the text conversation again, frowning at my own words. My replies to his photo and to his sensual admissions are disappointing. I should have come back with an equally honest admission of what I want and felt. He crept over the wall tonight, took a peek at me, and let me see a peek of him. Maybe it was wrong of me to send him

  • His Best Friend's Daughter   Chapter fifty six

Kyra POVTor ~ age fifteen Elara ~ age fourteen Aiden ~ age fifteenBeing shy sucks. It took me weeks of smiling at the new girl in our class, Elara, to work up the balls to ask her if I could walk her home after school. She's shy too, though, and now we're walking in awkward silence. I want to hold her hand, but I can't tell if she wants me to. I've got my guitar with me, slung over my back in its case since I'm playing in a school project, so I ask her if she wants to stop at the park and listen to me play. I lose myself in the music when I play, and it always calms me down, stripping me of my insecurities. One thing I know I do well is create music and write lyrics."Sure," she says. "I do some singing. I'm not great, but I love to do it anyway. If it makes your ears hurt, I promise I'll stop."It turns out she does, in fact, have an amazing voice, and my shyness starts to fade as we sit at a picnic table. I play some of her favorite hit songs and she sings along. I try not to
