CHAPTER 1

Harper

“You really thought showing up here would make you look like you belong, Harper?”

Ethan’s voice echoed through the glittering ballroom. I turned slowly, champagne glass cold in my fingers, and met the eyes of the man I once believed I loved. He stood there in his tailored black suit, smirking like the entitled prince he was.

I smiled, sweet and sharp. “I was invited, Ethan. Unlike whatever desperate plus-one you dragged along tonight.”

His date, a tall blonde in a dress that cost more than my rent, shifted uncomfortably beside him. The Blackwood family’s annual charity gala swirled around us: crystal chandeliers, soft classical music.

I’d spent months working my way into Blackwood Enterprises as a low-level analyst. Tonight was supposed to be my chance to slip upstairs and find the old files about my mother. Instead, I was face-to-face with the ghost of my worst mistake.

Ethan stepped closer, lowering his voice. “You’re playing a dangerous game. My family doesn’t tolerate rats.”

“Funny,” I said, keeping my tone light, “I thought they specialized in creating them.”

He laughed, but it was cold. “Still bitter about your mother? That was business, Harper. Nothing personal.”

The words landed like a slap. My mother had lost her small company, her savings, her dignity, everything, after the Blackwoods swallowed her up in one ruthless deal. She’d spent the rest of her short life warning me about them. I’d promised her I would make it right.

Before I could answer, Ethan’s date tugged his arm. “Let’s go, babe. People are staring.”

He gave me one last look, full of warning and pity, then walked away. Humiliation burned in my chest. I needed air. I needed to get upstairs. But security was tight, and my head was spinning.

I slipped out a side door into the cool night, heels clicking on the stone terrace. The gardens stretched out dark and quiet, fairy lights twinkling between trees. I leaned against the railing, breathing hard, trying to steady myself.

“Rough night?”

The voice was deep, rough around the edges, like whiskey and smoke. I turned and found a tall man standing a few feet away. Dark suit, broad shoulders, face half-hidden in shadow. He looked older than most of the glossy guests inside, mid-forties maybe, with a quiet power that made the air feel thicker.

“You could say that,” I muttered. “Family drama.”

He gave a low chuckle that sent an unexpected shiver down my spine. “Family is usually the source of the worst drama.”

I studied him. Strong jaw, tired but sharp eyes, silver threading through his dark hair. Handsome in a way that felt dangerous. Not like Ethan’s polished charm, this man looked like he’d survived real wars.

“I don’t think I’ve seen you inside,” I said.

“I was leaving when I heard raised voices.” He stepped closer. “Sounded like you were holding your own.”

“Years of practice.” I smiled despite myself.

He offered me his hand. “Care for a walk? The gardens are quieter than that circus in there.”

I hesitated only a second. Something about him felt safe and reckless at the same time. I took his hand. His grip was warm and firm.

We started walking along the stone path. The fairy lights made soft shadows on his face. I felt nervous but also curious.

“So, what brings a woman like you to a place like this?” he asked. His voice was calm and low. “You don’t seem like the type who enjoys these fake parties.”

I let out a small laugh. “You’re right. I don’t. I came for work reasons. What about you? You look like you could own half the room if you wanted.”

He smiled a little, but it did not reach his eyes fully. “I’ve been to too many of these events. They all start to feel the same. People smiling while they plan how to stab each other in the back. Tell me, do you have someone waiting inside who might miss you?”

“No,” I said quickly. “No one important. My ex was in there, but we’re done. Very done. He just reminded me why I should stay away from complicated men.”

The man raised an eyebrow. “Complicated? Is that what I am already?”

I glanced at him and felt my cheeks warm. “I don’t even know your name. Maybe you are. You have that look. Like you carry heavy things but don’t show it.”

He stopped walking for a moment and looked at the trees. “Heavy things. Yes. Life gives everyone scars. Some you see, some you don’t. What about you? What scars are you hiding tonight?”

I sighed and kept walking beside him. “Family stuff. Old pain that won’t go away. My mom went through a lot because of powerful people. It made me careful. Too careful sometimes.”

He nodded slowly. “I understand that. I lost someone close years ago. It changes how you see everything. Makes you build walls. But tonight, talking to you feels… different. Easy. I like that.”

We sat on a bench near the guest house. The night air felt cool on my skin. He turned to me.

“Tell me something real,” he said. “Not the party talk. What do you want most right now?”

I thought for a second. “To forget everything for a while. Just feel normal. Not like I’m fighting a war inside my head.”

He reached out and touched my hand gently. “Then let’s forget. For tonight. No names. No past. Just this.”

I looked into his eyes. They were deep and tired but kind in a hidden way. “You make it sound simple.”

“It can be,” he replied. His thumb brushed over my fingers. “If we let it.”

We talked more. He told me little things about how these big events tired him out. I shared how I hated feeling small around rich people. His hand moved to my waist. I did not pull back.

“I shouldn’t,” I whispered, but I leaned in.

“Neither should I,” he said softly. “But here we are.”

We stood and walked into the quiet guest house. The door closed behind us. He kissed me slow at first. Then stronger. His hands were careful but full of need. I kissed him back the same way. It felt like the world outside disappeared. We moved together like we had known each other longer than one night. He whispered in my ear how beautiful I felt. I told him not to stop. We gave in completely.

When I woke the next morning, sunlight streamed through the windows. I reached out, but the bed beside me was empty. My body ached in the best and worst ways. I sat up, wrapping the sheet around myself, and froze.

On the nightstand was a sleek black watch. I recognized the engraved initials.

D.B.

My stomach dropped.

The door opened. He stepped in wearing a fresh shirt, holding two cups of coffee. Those same tired, sharp eyes met mine.

“Good morning,” Damian Blackwood said calmly.

The man who had destroyed my mother’s life. The head of the empire I’d sworn to bring down.

I had just slept with the enemy.
