POV: Yessica | Location: Edinburgh

"Pippa," Yessica said.

Lewis went still.

Not tense — still. The specific stillness of someone who understood the weight of a name without needing it explained.

"I'll step away," he said.

"No." The word came out before she'd decided it. "Stay."

She answered.

"Yessica." Pippa's voice was careful. Stripped of the warmth she usually performed on opening. Just the name. Just — presence.

"I'm here," Yessica said.

"I know this isn't— I know you said you needed time.

  • His Billion-Dollar Regret: The Forgotten Wife Returns   Chapter 47 — Marchmont Road

POV: Yessica | Location: EdinburghDr. Gillies's practice was a twenty-minute walk from the Grassmarket. They didn't talk much on the way. Not because the silence was uncomfortable — it wasn't. It had the quality of two people moving toward the same thing with their own separate versions of dread, and neither of them pretending otherwise.Lewis walked beside her at the same careful distance as before. On the steeper part of the hill he slowed without comment, matching her pace without making it obvious he was doing so.She noticed. Said nothing. The practice was a converted Georgian terrace on Marchmont Road. The kind of building Edinburgh did without effort — stone and symmetry and windows that had watched two hundred years of ordinary human urgency pass through them. The waiting room was warm. Cream walls, chairs upholstered in something practical. A water dispenser in the corner. Two other women waiting, neither looking up."I'll be out here," Lewis said."I know." She turned towar

I wanted you to hear that from me, not from Diana.""I know. Diana told me Thursday.""Okay." A pause. "Did it help?""It helped the filing, yes.""That's not what I meant."Yessica looked out at the Grassmarket. The market noise, the tourists, the ordinary Saturday continuing without any awareness of what was being said inside it."I don't know yet," she said honestly.Silence on Pippa's end."I've been trying to write you

  • His Billion-Dollar Regret: The Forgotten Wife Returns   Chapter 45 — The Saturday After

POV: Yessica | Location: EdinburghAgnes arrived with shortbread and the particular expression of a woman who had already formed opinions she wasn't going to volunteer unless asked. She sat in the armchair. Ate a piece of shortbread. Looked around the flat in the comfortable way of someone who'd been in it a hundred times."Well," she said finally."Well," Yessica said."It's over.""The legal part."Agnes nodded. That distinction satisfied her. She didn't push for more. They drank tea. The Friday morning stretched into afternoon. Yessica told Agnes about Catherine's phone call, about Theron, about what Lewis had asked for at the kitchen table. Agnes listened the way she always did — fully, without interruption, processing in real time without letting the processing show on her face. When Yessica finished, Agnes was quiet for a moment."He asked to be nearby," Agnes said."Yes.""Not inside. Not in the room. Just nearby.""Yes."Agnes looked at her shortbread. Turned it in her fingers

  • His Billion-Dollar Regret: The Forgotten Wife Returns   Chapter 44 — After Friday

POV: Yessica | Location: EdinburghDiana called at nine forty-seven Friday morning."It's filed," she said. "Time-stamped, on record, confirmed by the court clerk twenty minutes ago. The Parental Responsibility Declaration is registered under Scottish family law. Edinburgh has primary jurisdiction." A pause — the first non-professional pause Diana had allowed herself since Wednesday. "We're done. Catherine's petition has no standing."Yessica sat at the kitchen table with both hands wrapped around a mug."Thank you," she said."Don't thank me yet. There will be future proceedings — access arrangements, parental planning, all of that. This isn't the end of the legal picture.""I know.""But the immediate threat is gone." Diana's voice settled. "You made it to Friday, Yessica."She ended the call.Sat in the quiet. The bookshop was closed today — Agnes had taken the morning, had said only you'll want the space and had left before Yessica could argue. The flat was very still. November li

  • His Billion-Dollar Regret: The Forgotten Wife Returns   Chapter 43 — Catherine

POV: Yessica | Location: EdinburghYessica didn't speak first. She waited. Held the phone. Let the silence do what silence did — reveal who was more uncomfortable with it.Catherine Sterling was not uncomfortable with silence.Ten seconds. Fifteen. Then: "I expected you to hang up.""I considered it," Yessica said."But you're curious.""I'm careful." Yessica stood up. Moved to the window. "There's a difference."A pause. Something shifted in the quality of the silence — not warmer, but different. Like a recalibration."I'm in London," Catherine said. "I flew in this morning.""Why.""Because conducting a legal campaign against someone from four thousand miles away is ineffective. I've apparently demonstrated that." The dryness in her voice was unexpected. Not self-deprecating — Catherine Sterling didn't do self-deprecation — but something adjacent. A woman acknowledging a tactical failure without flinching. "I wanted to speak to you before tomorrow.""My solicitor should be part of a

POV: Yessica | Location: EdinburghShe called him back immediately. He answered on the first ring. Like he'd been holding the phone."Dad.""Yessica." His voice was different from Wednesday. Wednesday he'd sounded cornered. This morning he sounded tired in a deeper way — not the exhaustion of a man under pressure, but the exhaustion of someone who had been carrying something for a long time and had finally decided to put it down."What didn't you tell me?" she said.A breath."Catherine didn't approach me through an intermediary," he said. "I told you that on Wednesday. It wasn't true."Yessica sat down."She contacted me directly?""In August. Six weeks after you arrived in Edinburgh." A pause. "I know. I should have told you immediately. I told myself I was protecting you from the stress. That was a lie I told myself because I was ashamed.""What did she say in August?""She said she knew about the pregnancy." His voice was careful. "Not from Pippa — this was before Pippa was involv
