Chapter 11

Author: Echo
(Dante's POV)

The screen wasn't finished.

The next videos were even more shocking. Isabella hadn't just bullied Rose; she had tormented nearly every poor girl in the school.

A red-haired girl was pushed down the stairs, her arm breaking on impact. An Asian girl's face was scarred with a pen. A Black girl was stripped naked and forced to kneel in the snow, begging for mercy.

Each clip was irrefutable proof of her crimes.

"Enough! Turn it off!" Isabella shrieked, trying to run to the console, but security held her back.

Suddenly, an angry shout erupted from the crowd. "It was her! That's the monster!"

A middle-aged woman in a server's uniform burst out of the crowd and lunged at Isabella, grabbing a handful of her hair. "My daughter killed herself because of you! She was only sixteen!"

Then more "staff" rushed forward.

"My son is in a wheelchair because of what you did!"

"You ruined my sister's life!"

They were the families of the victims. They had been tipped off and had infiltrated the wedding staff, waiting for this very moment.

Isabella was swarmed. Her expensive dress was torn, her perfect makeup smeared by scratches. She screamed for help, but no one moved to her aid.

Dante stood frozen, the videos replaying in his mind. He remembered Rose's despair in the hospital, her struggles as they dragged her away, her fear every time she faced Isabella.

Rose had never been lying.

They were the real villains. He and Marco weren't righteous judges; they were accessories to a monster.

"Isabella..." Dante's voice was a low growl. "You used us."

Isabella, her hair a mess and her face swollen, finally broke free. She saw Dante walking toward her and a flicker of hope appeared in her eyes. "Dante! Help me! These people are crazy!"

She tried to run into his arms, but he shoved her away so hard she fell to the ground.

"You think I'm still going to protect you?" Dante's eyes were burning with rage. "What did you take us for? Your personal tools for revenge?"

Marco stared at her with pure disgust.

"No! It's not like that!" Isabella screamed. "Rose is framing me!"

"Shut your mouth!" Dante kicked a nearby chair over. "The proof is right there! How long are you going to keep lying?"

The wail of police sirens grew closer. Someone had called the cops.

A dozen officers stormed in and quickly took control. They arrested Isabella. As they cuffed her, she was still screaming curses.

The beautiful wedding was now a chaotic, pathetic joke.

Just then, Dante's and Marco's phones buzzed at the same time.

A text from Rose.

It was a single photo, no words. An ultrasound and a hospital document, clearly stating: Patient Rose Rivera, 8 weeks pregnant, voluntary termination of pregnancy.

Dante's hand started to shake, the phone nearly slipping from his grasp.

Marco saw the photo and froze. He remembered Rose vomiting that night, the way she'd clutched her stomach…

"She... she was pregnant..." Marco's voice was a choked whisper.

Without a doubt, it was his child.

Dante immediately dialed Rose's number. The number was no longer in service. He tried a dozen times. All disconnected.

Meanwhile, at O'Hare International Airport, Rose sat in the departure lounge, looking at her phone. She knew Dante and Marco were desperately trying to call her, filled with regret.

But it was too late.

Rose gently touched her stomach. The baby was gone, but a dull ache remained, a constant reminder of what she had endured.

The boarding call echoed through the terminal. Rose stood up, snapped her SIM card in half, and tossed the entire phone into a trash can.

From this day on, Rose Rivera was a ghost in Chicago.

She walked toward the gate without looking back, her silhouette resolute and final.

Time froze. The knife plunged toward my chest."Rose! Watch out!"Marco threw himself in front of me, taking the blade in his back."AHH!" Isabella shrieked, pulling the bloody knife free and lunging at Dante, slashing his arm."Die! All of you, die!" she screamed, swinging the knife wildly.Suddenly, a figure shot through the crowd. "Alex!" I cried out.In a flash, Alex disarmed Isabella and wrestled her to the ground."Call an ambulance!" someone yelled.Marco lay in a pool of blood, his face pale, but his eyes were on me. "Rose... are you okay?"Dante clutched his bleeding arm, his gaze just as worried. "Rose..."The paramedics loaded them onto stretchers. "Rose..." Marco whispered, reaching for me. "I'm sorry..."I looked at them, then turned and walked to Alex.He gently touched my face. "Are you scared?""I'm okay. You're here," I said, leaning against his chest. As the ambulance doors closed, I saw the despair in Dante's and Marco's eyes. I didn't look back. That night, Alex too

"Alex?!" I gasped, a genuine smile breaking across my face."Why is it that every time I see you, you're in some kind of trouble?" he grinned.I couldn't help but laugh. "When did you get back to Chicago?""Last week," he said, helping me pick up my scattered groceries. "Seems like we're fated to meet."The little boy ran over, apologizing. I ruffled his hair. "It's okay, just be careful next time."Alex carried my bags. "I'll walk you home.""Thanks for saving me. Again," I smiled."So, how are you going to repay me this time?" he asked, still smiling, but his eyes held a serious glint. "An offer of marriage, perhaps?"I blushed. "I know a great Italian restaurant. My treat?"He nodded, his eyes warm.We talked for hours. About the border, about our lives. He was a great listener."So, how long are you in Chicago for?" I asked."I'm stationed here now," he said. "Head of regional security.""That's great. At least I'll have one friend in the city.""Just a friend?" he asked, looking i

Three months later, gunfire erupted again.I was huddled in the corner of an abandoned warehouse, clutching my camera as bullets whizzed overhead. The interview had gone south. We'd stumbled into a drug deal."Rose! Get down!"A familiar voice cut through the chaos. I turned, and couldn't believe my eyes.Dante and Marco were charging toward me, guns blazing, laying down cover fire."Dammit, she's hit!" Marco cursed, seeing the blood on my arm."Rose, can you walk?" Dante knelt beside me, quickly assessing the wound.I looked at them, a storm of complicated feelings swirling inside me. "I can walk," I said flatly. They covered me as we broke through the firefight. By the time we reached safety, Marco's shoulder had a bullet hole in it, and a ricochet had gashed Dante's cheek."Your injuries..." I started to say."It's nothing," Dante shook his head. "Yours is more serious. We need to treat it now."They patched me up with practiced, gentle hands. They had both lost weight and looked ex

Marco was silent for a long moment. "Rose, I need to tell you something.""If you're here to plead your brother's case, save it.""It's not about him," Marco said, stepping inside and crouching in front of me. "It's about me."I finally looked at him."Rose, I'm in love with you. I have been since the first moment I saw you," he said, his eyes filled with anguish. "These last three years have been torture."I dropped the bandage I was holding. "So?""So, I'm asking you, if you'd give me a chance...""A chance?" I burst out laughing, a sound that made him flinch. "Marco Blackwood, are you joking?"He stared at me, stunned."You've loved me from day one?" I stood up, looking down at him. "Then tell me, if you loved me so much, why did you stand by and watch your brother play me for a fool?"His face went pale."You knew Isabella was lying. You knew she was framing me. Why didn't you say anything?" I took a step closer. "Was it because you enjoyed watching me suffer?""No, Rose, I...""Or

The next evening, Dante came to find me. He looked stronger. "Rose, we need to talk.""If it's about your health, talk to the doctor," I said, not looking up from the supplies I was organizing."It's not about my health," he said, stepping in front of me. "Rose, I need to apologize. For everything."I finally looked at him. "Apologize?""Yes," Dante's eyes were full of regret. "Isabella lied to me. She told me you bullied her in school. I was a fool to believe her. Rose, I never loved her. It was always you."I set down the bandages and laughed, a cold, empty sound. "She lied to you?""Yes, and I—""Enough," I cut him off. "Dante, let me ask you one question."He held his breath."The night my grandmother was dying, where were you?"His face went white."I... I was at home...""With who?""Isabella... she..." his voice trailed off."Then what is there to explain?" My voice was like ice. "My grandmother wanted to see you one last time, and you were busy in bed with Isabella, weren't you

I turned and walked away.I didn't say hello, didn't ask what was wrong. I just grabbed my equipment and walked back to the medical tent."Rose! Wait!" Marco's voice was desperate behind me. "Please... just let me explain..."I stopped, but didn't turn around. "This is a field hospital, Mr. Blackwood. If your brother needs medical attention, find the camp doctor. Otherwise, we have nothing to talk about."I disappeared into the tent."What's wrong?" Alex asked, seeing my pale face."Nothing, just the sun," I lied, sitting beside him.Over the next two hours, I stayed with Alex, listening to the sounds of Dante's surgery from a nearby tent. Without proper anesthesia, his screams of pain were sharp and raw. I felt nothing. After the surgery, the camp doctor came over. "Rose, can we use your tent? The medical bay is full, and this patient needs a quiet place to recover.""Of course."They brought Dante in on a stretcher. He was pale and sweating. When he saw me, a flicker of light appeare
