~Ioana~
"The Queen's awake! Oh, thank the glorious Selenara!" When I gained consciousness, eyes snapping open to the familiar luxurious ceiling, along with the sobbing beside me, I knew without someone telling me, I am back. Footsteps sounded, the door burst open, slamming against the wall with a bang. "It's true! The Queen's awake!" 'Back to this palace.' "After a month..." 'Back to its people.' I thought my head would be gone this time for sure. It's truly a miracle only Selenara can do. 'And back to the chilling indifference.' " At least the coronation will no longer be postponed." " The prince is so pitiful. Even the world seems against him—but I'm not."<~Ioana~A hand slipped into mine.My jaw dropped open in shock, my head snapped to the left, staring at him with my eyes wide open. What—what is he doing?Everything else faded away—the chatters, the murmurs, the bone-piercing stares all went away—until it was only me and him, hazel on gold, his hands in mine. Complicated emotions went through his eyes.He sighed. "Stage fright?" he scoffed softly. "It would be a shame if you embarrass me as my mate. Don’t think too much." His hand gripped mine tightly, pulling me forward. I stumbled after him, my heels clacking against the floor. Heat crept up my cheeks. How could he say something like that? He halted before the railing, staring down at the crowd, his face emotionless, giving only a nod of greeting to the elders."Prince." Elder Thalvorn gave a curt nod, while Elder Caldren inserted sharply by the side, "We thought you would be too busy to grace us with your presence after all…" He smiled snarkily, his chin jutting out, joy spilling
~Ioana~"Queen, you're here just in time. We were about to break the news to our citizens, and I'm sure they'll want to hear you speak to them," Elder Caldren drawled, eyeing my trembling self with skepticism.Elder Caldren coughed. "Leader," he whispered to Elder Thalvorn standing beside him. Gaining his attention, he stated, "The people are waiting, sir.""That's true, we can't keep them waiting anymore," he concurred. Then, in a loud voice, he addressed the puzzled crowd. "People of the New Moon Kingdom! The time may seem—very scarcely do we call meetings like this in a short span of time since our last meeting—the coronation. But if our memory serves us well, you would remember that on the night of the coronation, something spectacular occurred."Immediately he mentioned this, like a spark being ignited, discussions detonated through the crowd. Everyone was whispering, hands flying in the air, wildly gesturing, eyes bright like the stars. Elder Thalvorn waited for some minutes, bu
~Ioana~One: I had gotten nowhere, like a raft on a turbulent sea. I could capsize at any time andTwo: Both Elder Thalvorn and Elder Caldren wanted to strike at Alessandro, he had always been the target and… perhaps I wasn’t taken seriously from the start. No wonder they had that strange smile in their eyes, something that couldn't be covered up.Elder Ysara’s words flashed through my mind, “Puppet ruler.”An awful picture of me bowing my head to Elder Thalvorn ran through my mind, causing a shiver to zap through me.By the time I came back to my senses, I was in my room. I looked out the window; a blanket of darkness greeted me."Madame, are you awake?" a familiar voice came from beyond the door."I am. Come in, Vivian," I ordered, my voice hoarse. I coughed lightly as the door softly creaked open and chocolate-brown hair popped in. Holding a tray, she walked in, lightly pushing the door with the tip of her toe. Watching as it shut, she turned."Oh my! Your Majesty! Please rest!" Pl
~Ioana~"What reason could be good enough for the years of maltreatment I've received?" I shot back at her, still not convinced by her words."For you it might not be much, but what about your protection and the freedom you have now?""I've never had freedom. Not then, not now.""Then how would you like a life of luxury and wealth until your eyes see higher than the heavens, becoming arrogant and prideful?"I paused, a picture of my nose pointed upwards as I walked came to my mind. I shook my head at the strange image that appeared."Or what about being cherished by everyone, only to die from poisoning at age five?"'That was even worse,' I thought."Perhaps you might prefer growing up with all the finest things in life, only to become a puppet under another's control. Everything you do or say will be according to that person's wishes."'Scratch that. This is the worst. A luxurious cage— isn't that the
~Ioana~“Elder Mirelda, what do you mean by such words?” a fierce growl sounded beside me. It was Alessandro—his eyes raging gold, his chest heaved, the temperature of the room suddenly shot through the roof. While I was knocked breathless, Alessandro wasn’t supposed to be king. Then who was? I wondered, my thumb brushing my chin.“It’s you,” a voice answered my thoughts.“That can’t be right, why would I be—” I froze still, my head snapping up. “Y-you heard m-me?” I stammered, a flush coating my cheeks red.“As clear as day,” it was Elder Barion who replied again, giving me a nod.Unconsciously, I had spoken my thoughts out loud and got replied to. Sixteen pairs of eyes drilled holes into me; I wanted the earth to crack up and swallow me whole. But Elder Barion’s reply hadn’t yet registered in my head.“What do you mean by this? Explain!” A harsh voice broke through my shame, pulling my thoughts back on track.“The night of the coronation was spectacular,” Elder Barion bobbed his hea
~Ioana~“Her Majesty, Ioana makes her entrance!” I gave a slight nod to the man who stood by the door, who yelled out.The burly men on either side of the massive door, with taut muscles, pulled open the doors, and the room unveiled itself to me.I had only one word to describe it with—magnificent.Towering ceilings, chandeliers, marble flooring so polished the hem of my gown was reflected back at me with each swish, a red rug rolled down the middle from the entrance up to…The corner of my lips twitched. A semicircle of elderly wolves, one at the center—Elder Thalvorn—staring straight at me with a frown on his face. By his side was Elder Caldren, who glowered. After him was Elder Ysara—she had her eyes closed shut, her face blank. After her was Elder Barion—he eyed me over and over, as if checking for something.By his left was Elder Mirelda, her lips pursed. She shot me a complicated look I couldn't understand before throwing her face away. The robed elder remained mysterious, and t
