The hard worker

The following year Mary registered to finish her high school. She attended the evening classes. After work she had to rush to the classes. This meant that she was over working herself more than before. She did not even have time to look after herself. She was a beautiful young woman anyway. Her slim figured body made her looked stunning even if she wore simple clothes. She would plait her hair and still looked stunning.

She carried on with work and studies until it was time to write her final exams. She studied during the night while she was exhausted. Finally, she finished her studies and it was time for December holidays. She went to spend Christmas with her family. She carried on being the skivvy to her stepsisters. They would party all the weekends and she was supposed to cook and clean for them. She was used to that and there was no time to complain. No one would be on her side anyway.

Then January came and it was the time to get her matric results. She had done well and she qualified for entrance at the university. That was the problem because she could not afford the fees. Her heart sank at thought of going back to work while she was supposed to be at university. She accepted her situation and go back to her usual job. She tried harder to save more money. She even sold cigarettes and sweets to other employees who were around. She vowed to herself to never touch her savings even if she needed to. She even cut the cost of buying toiletries. She opted for cheaper ones. She did not even buy clothes. Her demanding family never stopped nagging for financial support. Should she missed a month to send them money, her stepmom would show up at her workplace to collect money. She would scold her for being selfish. Her daughters had already dropped from school and were partying till the last clock.

It did not bother them to burden her with all household necessities while they were idling at home. They would ask her to buy them even the toiletries. Their mother was starting to worry about the way in which her children were conducting themselves. She had no guts to confront then because she spoilt them herself. They were useless spoilt brats who would even drink the money that was meant for buying groceries. In the middle of the month, they would go and bother Mary to buy them food. She would be obliged to withdraw her savings, her hard earned money to buy food for people who did not to even acknowledge her.

She pushed harder and kept limiting to cater  her own needs to support her ungrateful family. Sometimes she would wish to pack all her bags and leave everything behind. Her heart on the other hand told her to persevere. She would miss her parents so much that she would cry herself to sleep. The same dream she dreamt after burying her father kept on coming back. She never had a chance to fathom the real meaning the dream was carrying. She ended up concluding that it was just a dream. Sometimes dream are into ironic while others are straight to the point. She carried on without bothering herself anymore about that dream.
