Zahara's POV

Armando read the message twice before he handed the phone to me without a word. His jaw tight—his knuckles pale against the steering wheel.

I read it once and I felt the same cold shock settle into my chest that I had felt kneeling beside Dr. Bram only an hour earlier.

"Someone got to him again" I said quietly. "Inside a hospital, with security everywhere."

"Whoever did this has reach I clearly do not fully understand yet."

Armando pulled through the estate gates slowly. His hands

Armando's POVI read Fiona's message twice. The same four words that had already unsettled me before I fully understood why.I need to talk. Coming from a woman still recovering her strength, sent at an hour this early. It was not just the kind of message I could set aside until later.I dressed quickly and went to find Zahara first. Remembering Fiona's promise from days earlier, the one she had made to us both together.I will tell you once I am certain.Whatever she was ready to say now, I suspected it belonged to that same unfinished thread. Not to the private question I had spent the entire night sitting with me alone in my study.I knocked on Zahara's door, and she answered. She's now in her night wear with dark circles beneath her eyes that told me she had slept little more than I had."Fiona wants to speak with us," I said. "Both of us. I think she is finally ready to tell us what she remembers."Zahara's expression sharpened immediately. Exhaustion giving way to focus."Now?"

  • His Contract Wife's Secret Twins    CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT

Armando's POVZahara went inside without a word once we finally left the car. Murmuring something about checking on Fiona before the night ended completely. And I let her go. Grateful in that moment—for the little more time I have alone before I had to face whatever conversation still waited between us.I went to my study instead of my bedroom, following the same restless habit of mine that had carried me through countless sleepless nights over the years. And I found myself, without fully deciding to. Opening the bottom drawer of my desk where I kept the few photographs I had never been able to throw away and never quite managed to display either. My mother had kept careful albums when I was small—just before everything changed. Most of them had been packed away in storage decades ago. But I had taken a handful of loose photographs with me; when I first moved into this house. Just a small, private reminder I rarely looked at but could never bring myself to part with.I found the one I

  • His Contract Wife's Secret Twins    CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN

Armando's POVThe park attendant reached us breathlessly. One hand pressed to his chest. His words tumbling out faster than it even made sense at first."Are you looking for two kids?" he asked."A boy and a girl, around five. Matching what the lady described to me a few minutes ago.""Yes."Zahara grabbed his arm before he could say anything else. "Where?""Near the pond. Past the trees on the other side." He pointed. Still catching his breath."I saw them with an older woman. They were both feeding the ducks, I did not think anything of it. There is always someone feeding the ducks over there."Zahara had already started running before he could finish the sentence. And I followed close behind her. My chest tight with a fear I had not allowed myself to fully feel until this exact moment. The possibility that this might end well—suddenly, almost harder to hold than the fear itself had been.We rounded the tree line together. And there exactly as the attendant described, sat two small

His hands still tight on the wheel even after we came to a stop in the long driveway. He did not turn off the engine. He simply sat there. Staring straight ahead. Something building behind his careful control that I had watched him hold back all day."Armando?""I need to ask you something," he said calmly."And I need you to actually answer me this time, Zahara. No careful half truths. Not after today."My stomach tightened. "Ask."He turned to face me fully. And I saw something raw in his expression, st

Armando's POVI had my phone out before Zahara finished the sentence. My hands steadier than I expected given the chaos suddenly filling the small office. The dispatcher's voice came through. Calmly and practiced. Asking questions I answered as clearly as I could while Zahara worked over the doctor's still form on the floor."His pupils are unequal," she said. Checking his eyes with quick, precise movements."One side of his face is completely slack. This is a stroke. A serious one. And it came on far too fast for something this severe.""Fast how?" I asked. Kneeling beside her."Strokes like this usually build—even quickly. There are warning signs beforehand. Slurred speech, mild confusion, a headache he would have mentioned."She pressed two fingers to his neck. Checking his pulse with the same steady focus I had watched her use on Fiona weeks earlier."But he went from speaking clearly to this in the space of one sentence. That is not typical. That is sudden enough to make me wonde

  • His Contract Wife's Secret Twins    CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR

Zahara's POVWe left before dawn the next morning. Taking one of the smaller cars from the estate garage instead of anything that might draw attention on the long drive mission.Armando dressed down for the trip—a plain jacket matched with a nice pant. Instead of his usual tailored suits. And I did the same. Pulling my hair back simply and leaving behind anything that might mark me as someone with money or a name people recognized."You look different like this," he said. Glancing at me once we were on the highway."So do you. Less like a man who owns half the city." I complimented back.He almost smiled at that. But the tension of the morning kept it from fully forming. Neither of us had slept much after the investigator's message about Dr. Bram's revoked license. The three unexplained patient deaths. And a different name in another state. It was clear now on whatever we were about to walk into. We were no longer dealing with a careless mistake, but with a man who had done this befor
