Zahara's POV

The wedding took place six days later in a private hall with more security guards than guests.

My wedding dress and flowers were never picked by me…just a fitted ivory gown Susan chose specifically because she knew I would hate it, but I did not care.

Outside the gate were a string of cameras kept carefully to protect Armando's business interests rather than my dignity.

The hall itself was beautiful in the cold, curated way…white orchids that cost more than my old monthly rent, a string quartet playing music nobody in the room actually wanted to hear.

I stood at the back of the aisle with my father's arm under mine...feeling less like a bride and more like cargo being delivered to its rightful owner.

"You do not have to smile, nobody here expects it." My father murmured as the doors opened.

"Good, because I could not manage one if I tried."

I said my vows to a man I had shared one reckless night with and had had a handful of cold conversations since…and he said his back with the same flat control he used in every sentence I had heard him speak.

His voice did not waver once but mine nearly did, on the word love…a word neither of us meant and both of us had to say it anyway, for the sake of the cameras waiting just outside the gate.

When the officiant told him he could kiss his bride, he brushed his mouth against my cheek instead, brief and clinical…and something in my chest ached in a way I refused to admit it hurts.

Fiona was the only person at that wedding who looked at me like I was a person and not a transaction.

Armando's aunt, small and elegant, dressed in a soft blue dress, she squeezed my hand after the ceremony and said…"Whatever this marriage is built on, I hope you both find something real underneath it."

I did not have the heart to tell her that real was the only thing I could never afford to want from her nephew. Her kindness caught me off guard...so completely that I had to look away before she saw my eyes fill.

"You have kind eyes and you remind me of someone." she added, tilting her head...like she was studying a painting she could not quite place.

"I have one of those faces," I said quickly, as I felt my pulse jumping.

"Perhaps." She smiled and did not push further...though something in the way she held my gaze a moment too long told me the resemblance had struck her harder than she let on.

That night, Armando led me into his study instead of his bedroom...and I understood immediately that this marriage would not begin the way most did.

"Three rules," he said, standing by the window with his back half turned to me, the city lights glittering behind him like something out of a painting he did not care to look at.

"No children. I built this life alone...and I intend to keep it that way. No affection, real or performed, beyond what is necessary in public. And there is a room on the east wing you are never to enter."

"Why?" I asked.

"Because I said so. Will you be willing to follow the rules, Zahara?" His voice left no room for argument.

I almost laughed, because two of his rules were already broken… had been broken for five years, sleeping soundly at Priya's apartment with my last name and his eyes.

He had no idea he was standing in front of the mother of his children…laying down a law that the universe had already shattered before he ever spoke it.

"Certainly, I will." I said instead, because the truth would end everything before it even began, and I was not ready…not yet, to lose the twins over a man who had just told me plainly he never wanted them.

"Good." He finally turned to look at me, and for one unguarded moment something moved behind his eyes…something that looked almost like Curiosity. Hunger, or both. Then it vanished, folded back into the careful stillness he wore like armor.

"Your room is down the hall. I will have your things moved from wherever you were staying."

My chest tightened. Wherever I was staying? If his people searched my apartment, they would find…Toys. Small shoes, and even a crib pushed against the wall of a room he must never learn existed.

"I would prefer to move my own things, there are some things I do not trust to strangers.” I said quickly.

He studied me for a long moment, and I held perfectly still under the weight of it…terrified he could somehow read the shape of the secret sitting behind my ribs. "As you wish...you have three days," he said finally.

I turned to leave but his voice stopped me at the door.

"One more thing." I glanced back. He was turned again facing the window, his reflection ghosted over the glittering skyline.

"The room on the east wing. If you hear anything from it at night, you are not to investigate. Whatever you think you hear, you leave it alone."

A chill moved through me. "What is in that room, Armando?"

"That is not part of the contract you signed," he said.

I left his study with my heart hammering so hard I was certain he could hear it through the closed door behind me…and as I walked down the long, unfamiliar hallway of my new home.

I passed a heavy door near the end of the east corridor...its wood darker than the rest and its handle worn smooth in a way that told me it was opened far more often than a forbidden room should be. I did not stop neither did I touch it.

But I understood, with a cold…sinking certainty, that this contract was never going to hold, not with two small hearts already tangled in the middle of it, and not with a locked door already whispering secrets of its own before I had even spent a single night under this roof.

  • His Contract Wife's Secret Twins    CHAPTER NINETY-FOUR

Armando's POVI did not tell Marcus everything I actually knew. I had learned, over the past several weeks, that revealing suspicion too early only taught the person suspected exactly how to hide more carefully. What I told him in that meeting was only enough to make him uneasy, not enough to make him panic.I called Griggs the moment Marcus left my office."I want a full report on his movements starting immediately," I said. "Everywhere he goes for the next forty eight hours. If he tries to leave the country, I want to know before he reaches the airport, not after.""Understood, Mr. Ivas."I spent the rest of the day preparing quietly, gathering everything Okoro and Priscilla had already uncovered into a single, organized file, along with the incorporation documents, Fiona's photographs, and the notebook Thomas had finally handed over weeks earlier.I wanted every piece assembled properly before I moved against Marcus formally. Understanding that a board this size did not remove a de

Marcus Kane's POVI spent the following three days drafting the motion with a precision I had rarely applied to anything else in my career. Every clause chosen carefully, every argument constructed to withstand the kind of scrutiny I already knew Armando's legal team would eventually throw against it.The core argument was simple enough on its surface. Section fourteen of the marriage contract explicitly stated that any child born during the marriage, without written consent from both parties predating conception. Held no legal claim to any asset or inheritance belonging to either party. Cherry and Edward had been born five years before the marriage even existed, which meant, in the strictest possible reading, the clause did not technically apply to them at all.I had anticipated this weakness from the beginning, which was precisely why I had spent an additional two days constructing a secondary argument built on considerably shakier ground. One that stretched the definition of the ma

Desmond Voss's POVMarcus arrived precisely on time, though I noted the faint unsteadiness in his hands as he took the seat across from my desk. The particular tremor of a man who understood exactly how close he had come to disappearing entirely over the past two days."You kept me waiting," I said simply."I needed to be certain I was not followed, Mr. Voss." He straightened slightly, composing himself with visible effort."Armando has private security watching my movements now. I had to take considerably more care than usual.""I am aware of your difficulties." I studied him for a long moment, weighing exactly how much use remained in a man whose usefulness had grown considerably more complicated in recent days."Susan came to see me yesterday evening. She mentioned a meeting with you I was not informed about beforehand."Something flickered across his face…careful and controlled. Though not quite fast enough to hide entirely. "I did not think it significant enough to report separat

  • His Contract Wife's Secret Twins    CHAPTER NINETY-ONE

Zahara's POVWe did not talk about Marcus that evening. We did not talk about Voss, or Okoro's growing case file, or any of the danger that had followed us through, nearly every week since our wedding. For one evening, Armando and I agreed quietly and without much discussion, to simply be a family instead. We ate dinner together in the small dining room instead of the formal one. Cherry and Edward seated between us, both of them chattering happily about a game they had invented that afternoon involving the garden hedges and an imaginary dragon only Edward claimed to have actually seen."It had big wings," Edward said seriously, gesturing wide with both arms. "And it breathed fire, but only a little bit, because it was still a baby dragon.""Baby dragons cannot breathe fire yet," Cherry said, unimpressed. "Everyone knows that.""This one could," Edward said firmly. And Armando laughed, a full, easy sound I had not heard from him in longer than I could remember. The sound settling somet

  • His Contract Wife's Secret Twins    CHAPTER NINETY

Clara's POVMy mother came home late that night, later than I had seen her return in weeks. She did not stop to speak with me the way she usually did. She passed the sitting room with her coat still on...her phone already pressed to her ear before she had even reached the stairs.I told myself it was nothing unusual. My mother had always kept her business private. Always careful about which parts of her life she let me see and which parts she kept locked firmly away, even from her own daughter. But something in the tightness of her shoulders that night. The particular hurried urgency in her steps made me pause at the bottom of the stairs instead of retreating to my own room the way I normally would. I had learned to stay calm and out of my mother's way ever since I returned back after I had a quarrel with Thomas. But curiosity of knowing more held me tight.I followed quietly, close enough to hear fragments drifting from behind her half closed door."I did not lie to him, Arthur," she

  • His Contract Wife's Secret Twins    CHAPTER EIGHTY-NINE

Susan's POVWord about Marcus reached me by evening. The way most useful information eventually did if I waited long enough and asked the right people the right questions. He was gone. Not simply missing for a few hours. Gone in a way that made his own office nervous enough to start whispering about it before the day even ended.I sat with that news for a long time, turning it over carefully. Because a missing lawyer meant one of two things. Either he had been caught doing something Voss did not want caught; or Voss himself had decided Marcus had become a problem worth removing quietly. But neither of the answers made me feel safe.I had spent weeks telling myself I was simply a useful piece in someone else's plan. Valuable enough to be protected as long as I kept doing what was asked of me. Watching Marcus vanish this easily made that comfort feel considerably thinner than it had that morning.I called Arthur first. My voice landed sharper than I meant it to be."Where is Marcus?""I
