The accusation struck harder than the bullet.

You killed Samuel Cross.

Elena stared into the darkness.

For one impossible second, she saw it.

A warehouse.

Rain.

Blood on concrete.

A young Adrian standing over a body.

Then the vision vanished.

She gasped.

Adrian grabbed her hand.

"Elena."

"I'm fine."

"You saw something."

"I said I'm fine."

Another gunshot shattered the silence.

Adrian pulled her behind the stone fireplace.

"Stay down."

Claire crouched beside them.

"He's not trying to kill us."

Elena stared at her.

"He's shooting at us."

"He's trying to frighten you."

"Who?"

Claire's expression tightened.

"Victor."

Adrian glanced toward the broken window.

"How many?"

"Three."

"You can tell?"

"Victor never works alone."

Adrian pulled his weapon.

Elena caught his sleeve.

"Don't go."

His eyes met hers.

"I need to get him away from you."

"No."

"Elena—"

"I said don't."

For a moment, something passed between them.

Fear.

Trust.

Something deeper neither had time to name.

Adrian lowered his weapon.

"Stay with your mother."

He moved toward the rear corridor.

Elena watched him disappear.

Then Claire grabbed her arm.

"We have to leave."

"Not without Adrian."

"Elena."

"I'm not leaving him."

Claire stared at her daughter.

Then something almost like recognition crossed her face.

"You sound like me."

---

They escaped through the basement.

Adrian reappeared moments later.

"Move."

Elena followed him.

Claire came behind them.

They reached the old garage.

Adrian opened a concealed door beneath the workbench.

A tunnel stretched beneath the house.

Elena stared.

"Where does this lead?"

"Three blocks away."

"Your family built tunnels under my house?"

"Apparently."

"Your family is insane."

"That has been established."

Despite everything, she almost smiled.

Then they heard footsteps behind them.

Adrian's expression changed.

"Run."

They moved through the tunnel.

The sound of boots followed.

Closer.

Closer.

Adrian stopped suddenly.

"Keep going."

Elena turned.

"No."

"There's a second exit."

"What about you?"

"I'll slow them down."

She shook her head.

"You are not sacrificing yourself."

"I'm not."

He stepped closer.

"I'm buying us time."

Claire grabbed Elena's shoulder.

"Trust him."

Elena looked at Adrian.

His face was calm.

But his eyes weren't.

She nodded.

"Come back."

His gaze softened.

"I will."

She ran.

---

Five minutes later, Elena heard footsteps behind her.

She turned.

Adrian emerged from the darkness.

Blood covered his knuckles.

"You're hurt."

"Not mine."

She exhaled.

"You scared me."

The words slipped out.

Adrian stopped.

Elena immediately looked away.

"I mean—"

"I know what you meant."

His voice was gentle.

Claire watched them from ahead.

Something unreadable crossed her face.

They reached the end of the tunnel.

A steel door opened into an abandoned chapel.

Elena recognized it.

The old church where she had been baptized.

Her mother's sanctuary.

Her father's secret.

The place that had somehow survived years of abandonment.

Adrian looked around.

"Is this it?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

Elena walked toward the altar.

A small brass cross sat beneath a layer of dust.

She touched it.

The cross moved.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a black box.

Claire whispered:

"Your father left that for you."

Elena opened it.

Inside lay three objects.

A key.

A photograph.

And a small digital recorder.

She picked up the photograph first.

Her father stood beside her mother.

But this time, they weren't alone.

A third man stood behind them.

Elena's heart stopped.

She knew that face.

"Victor."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

Elena turned the photograph over.

A date.

October 14, 2008.

The same day her father supposedly died.

She picked up the recorder.

Pressed play.

Samuel Cross's voice filled the chapel.

"If Elena has found this, then I am probably dead."

Elena closed her eyes.

"But if I'm wrong..."

A pause.

"...then you are listening to this because Victor has finally exposed himself."

Adrian stepped closer.

Samuel continued.

"Elena, there is something your mother never told you."

Claire looked away.

Elena noticed.

"What didn't you tell me?"

Claire said nothing.

The recording continued.

"You were never the reason we created the Covenant."

Elena's brow furrowed.

"You were the reason we kept it alive."

The recorder clicked.

Then Samuel said:

"And Adrian is the reason it survived."

Adrian went completely still.

Elena looked at him.

"Why?"

The recording answered.

"Because Richard chose his son."

A long pause.

"He knew Adrian would inherit everything."

"Not the company."

"The Covenant."

The recording ended.

Silence.

Adrian stared at the recorder.

"No."

Claire whispered:

"Your father knew what was coming."

Adrian looked at her.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you let me believe I had nothing to do with it?"

"Because you were eighteen."

"You should have told me."

"You weren't ready."

His expression hardened.

"And now?"

Claire looked at Elena.

"Now neither of you has a choice."

---

The digital recorder suddenly activated again.

No one had touched it.

A distorted voice emerged.

"Hello, Adrian."

He froze.

The voice was male.

Calm.

Controlled.

Victor.

"I knew you'd eventually find the chapel."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Where are you?"

A soft laugh.

"Still asking the wrong question."

Elena stepped closer to the recorder.

"Then I'll ask."

The voice went silent.

"You've spent years hiding behind other people," Elena said. "My mother. Your father. The Covenant."

She looked at the device.

"If you want me, come get me."

Adrian turned sharply.

"Elena."

Victor laughed.

"Your daughter has your courage, Claire."

Claire stepped forward.

"What do you want?"

"She knows."

Elena frowned.

"Knows what?"

Victor's voice became quieter.

"Ask her what happened the night Samuel died."

The recorder clicked off.

Elena turned toward her mother.

"What happened?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I couldn't save him."

"That's not what he said."

Claire shook her head.

"Your father wasn't killed at the warehouse."

Elena froze.

"What?"

"He was already dying."

Adrian stepped forward.

"What are you saying?"

Claire looked at him.

"Victor had poisoned him."

Adrian's face went pale.

"Then why did everyone say I killed him?"

"Because Victor needed someone to blame."

Elena's eyes narrowed.

"Why Adrian?"

Claire hesitated.

"Because Adrian was the last person Samuel trusted."

She looked at him.

"And the last person Samuel saw."

Adrian's breathing changed.

Fragments flashed through his mind.

Rain.

A hand against his shoulder.

Samuel's voice.

Run.

A gunshot.

Then darkness.

Adrian staggered.

Elena caught him.

"Adrian."

He gripped her arm.

"I remember..."

Claire stepped closer.

"What?"

Adrian looked at her.

"I remember Samuel."

Everyone went silent.

"What do you remember?" Elena asked.

Adrian's eyes unfocused.

"He was bleeding."

Claire nodded.

"He told me to run."

"Why?"

Adrian's breathing became uneven.

"Because Victor was coming."

Elena looked at Claire.

"And then?"

Adrian's face twisted.

"I turned around."

He swallowed.

"I saw Victor."

A pause.

"He was holding a gun."

Claire covered her mouth.

Adrian whispered:

"Then someone hit me."

His hand went to the side of his head.

"Everything went black."

Elena stared.

"You didn't kill him."

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"I didn't."

For the first time, Elena saw something she had never seen in him.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Pain.

"You've carried this for years."

"I didn't know why."

He looked at Claire.

"You erased my memory."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I had to."

"You had no right."

"I know."

Adrian turned away.

Elena stepped closer.

He didn't look at her.

"Adrian."

"I'm fine."

"You aren't."

He finally looked at her.

Their eyes met.

She reached for his hand.

He hesitated.

Then let her take it.

His fingers closed around hers.

A small gesture.

But it steadied him.

Claire watched them.

Then she whispered:

"There is one thing you both need to know."

Elena looked at her.

"What?"

Claire pointed toward the black box.

"The key."

Elena picked it up.

"What about it?"

"It opens the Covenant vault."

Adrian frowned.

"I thought the vault was destroyed."

"It wasn't."

"Where is it?"

Claire looked at Elena.

"Under the Vale estate."

Elena's heart sank.

"The mansion?"

Claire nodded.

"Your father hid the original Covenant there."

Adrian stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Richard made sure you couldn't access it."

"How?"

Claire's voice dropped.

"Your blood."

Adrian's expression changed.

"What?"

"Your father's security system requires two genetic signatures."

Elena looked between them.

"Whose?"

Claire answered:

"Richard Vale's bloodline."

She looked at Elena.

"And Samuel Cross's."

Silence.

Elena stared at the key.

"That's why it recognizes me."

Claire nodded.

"And that's why Victor wants you."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Why does Victor need her?"

Claire's face became grim.

"Because the vault doesn't just contain the original Covenant agreement."

She looked at Elena.

"It contains the evidence that can destroy Victor."

A sound came from outside the chapel.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Adrian moved toward the entrance.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

He opened the door.

Nobody stood outside.

Only a black envelope lay on the steps.

Adrian picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

Elena looked over his shoulder.

Her father.

Alive.

Older.

Standing beside a grave.

The grave belonged to Richard Vale.

On the back, five words were written:

HE'S WAITING AT THE VAULT.

Elena's heart stopped.

Her father was alive.

And he knew where the Covenant vault was.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

COME ALONE, ELENA.

A second message appeared.

OR ADRIAN DIES.

Elena looked up.

Adrian was already staring at her.

He had seen the message.

And in the distance, beyond the chapel windows, a single figure stood beneath the trees.

Watching them.

Elena couldn't see his face.

But she knew one thing.

Victor had finally stopped hiding.

The room went silent. Elena read the sentence again. THE SIGNATURE CAME FROM INSIDE THIS HOUSE. Her eyes moved toward Rebecca. “Who had access to the Cross Estate's legal archive?” Rebecca folded the paper. “That's the wrong question.” Adrian looked at her. “Then what's the right one?” “Who had access without leaving a record?” Julian's expression changed. “The trustees.” Rebecca nodded. “Not just the trustees.” She pointed toward the ceiling. “The estate's original legal office.” Elena frowned. “There's a legal office upstairs?” “There was.” Rebecca looked at the corridor behind them. “Thomas converted it into a private records room years ago.” Julian stepped forward.
