Chapter Fifty Six

“Please, Clara,” Damien said softly into the phone. His voice was lower than usual, almost careful. He stood near the window, the small black box resting in his palm. He kept opening it, closing it, then opening it again, his thumb brushing over the ring inside. “We haven’t gone out to dinner for some while.”

On the other end, Clara had locked herself in the bathroom. John was in the living room, moving around, unaware. She leaned against the sink, phone pressed to her ear, her lips curling slightly.

“I’ll think about it,” she said. “I’m just a little busy.”

Damien exhaled. “Let me come over, Clara. I really missed you.”

“No, Damien.”

Her answer came too fast.

“You don’t want me coming anymore?” he asked, a sharp edge creeping into his voice.

She didn’t reply immediately. She watched her reflection in the mirror, adjusted her hair, then spoke calmly. “It’s not that. I just don’t want any trouble.”

As Damien waited for her response, the door behind him opened quietly.

---Chapter Fifty EightThe door opened without a knock.Aria had just stepped out of the bathroom, her hair still wet, water sliding down her neck. She had wrapped the towel around herself tightly, already tired, already ready to sleep on the floor like she always did. The room smelled of soap and warm steam. Then she saw him.Damien stood by the door, his jacket half off, his shirt loose, his eyes red and empty at the same time. There was alcohol on his breath, strong enough that she smelled it before he even spoke. She froze. For a second, neither of them moved. He didn’t look at her the way men usually did. There was no hunger. No desire. Just something broken sitting behind his eyes. He stared at her like she wasn’t fully there, like she was part of the wall or the furniture. Then he laughed. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t funny either. Just a short sound, dry and bitter.“So this is home,” he said, his voice rough. “This is what waits for me.”Aria tightened the towel around her ches

Chapter Fifty SevenDamien arrived at the restaurant early.Too early. The waiter had already shown him to a quiet table near the window. Soft music played somewhere behind him. Glasses clinked. Low voices filled the space. He sat there with his back straight, his phone on the table, checking the time again and again. She was late.He told himself not to overthink it. Clara was always late. She liked making an entrance. Still, his fingers kept tapping the table, slow at first, then faster. He ordered water. Took a sip. Set the glass down untouched after that. When he almost decided to stand up and leave, the door opened. And there she was.Clara walked in like she owned the place. Her dress hugged her perfectly, dark and elegant. Her hair fell neatly on her shoulders. Heads turned. Damien forgot how to breathe for a second. She spotted him and walked over without a smile.“You’re late,” he said, standing up.“You’re early,” she replied, taking her seat.He sat back down, trying to rea

Chapter Fifty FiveAria sat across from Richard in his study, her hands folded tightly on her lap. The room smelled faintly of old books and polished wood. The curtains were half drawn, letting in a soft afternoon glow. Richard sat behind his large desk, his glasses resting low on his nose as he studied her quietly.“Do you wonder why I called you here?” he asked at last.Aria shook her head slowly. “No, Mr Richard,” she said. Her eyes stayed on her hands. She kept rubbing her thumb over her fingers, a nervous habit she couldn’t control.Richard leaned back in his chair and sighed. “I know I’ve been a liability to you,” he said. “Since the day we met, you haven’t known peace.”Her head lifted immediately. “No, Mr Richard, please don’t say that,” she said quickly. “It’s okay. I chose this.”He gave a sad smile. “You say that, but I see everything, Aria. I see the way Damien treats you. I see the strain in your eyes.”She didn’t answer. Her lips pressed together, and she looked down aga

Chapter Fifty FourAria stepped quietly into the room. The window was wide open, and a cold wind swept in, carrying the faint scent of the garden outside. Damien was asleep on the bed, uncovered. The blanket he had refused earlier lay crumpled beside him.She froze for a moment, watching him. He looked so peaceful, so unlike the man who had yelled, pushed, and screamed the night before. His hair fell over his forehead, his breathing slow and even. She could almost forget the cruelty he showed her sometimes, just looking at him like this.Carefully, she moved closer and pulled a blanket over him, tucking it gently around his shoulders. Her hands lingered for a moment, brushing lightly over his arm as if she could shield him from the world. He had told her not to get into his bed. She knew that. But she couldn’t help herself. She laid a mat on the floor nearby. There was no blanket for her. None in sight. Her fingers brushed the cold floor, and she shivered, pulling her arms around her

Chapter Fifty ThreeClara walked in a little past 8 p.m.Her heels clicked softly against the floor as she pushed the door shut behind her. The house lights were low. The television was on. A reality show played quietly, voices overlapping, laughter forced.John sat on the couch, eyes on the screen, one arm resting on the armrest. He didn’t turn when she entered.Clara frowned slightly and reached for the switch. The light came on.Clara paused for half a second, studying him, then reached for the switch. The light flooded the room.“Oh baby, you’re here,” she said with a bright smile, dropping her bag on the chair. She walked over quickly and bent to hug him, her arms already wrapping around his shoulders. He didn’t respond. Her arms stayed there for a moment longer than normal, then she slowly pulled back.“John?” she said, her smile thinning. “Why are you sitting like that?”That was when her eyes caught it.The roses.A large bouquet of red roses sat on the center table.
