The next morning met Isla at the well-furnished bedroom Damien had ushered her into the previous night.

She blinked her eyes slowly on the bed, adjusting to the light glow as the events of the previous day came rushing back, she sat up abruptly, the weight of her decision passed down her chest like a stone.

Yesterday, she had arrived here as Isla Carter, a betrayed and bitter divorcee desperate for revenge. Today, she woke up as Isla Blackwood, wife to perhaps the most ruthless and one of the wealthiest men in the city. A stranger. A billionaire whose motive she still couldn't grasp.

The sound of the door opening snapped her out of her thoughts. She turned to see Damian standing in the doorway, his tall, imposing figure framed by the light of the room. His presence seemed to fill the room, the air growing heavier as his gaze met hers. Isla felt exposed and vulnerable and quietly pulled the sheet tighter around her.

For a moment, Damien said nothing, he simply watched, his expression unreadable. Then he stepped inside, holding out an elegant black gown.

"You should get dressed," he muttered coolly. "We have a meeting."

Isla's face was instantly filled with lines making her hesitate as she collected the gown.

Suspicion was in the tone of her voice when she asked, "With who?"

Damien smirked, though it didn’t reach his eyes before he nodded once to say, "The press.”

~~~
At about 2p.m, Damien and Isla stepped out of his black Limousine; cameras flashed with a speed that almost blinded their eyes, capturing every angle.
Isla was still trying to get used to this when she felt Damien’s hand sliding into her own. She bit her lip. Her fingers felt like dried sticks in his own, but he didn’t let go. Instead, he dug further into them, making her hold her breath.
Why was he being too romantic?
“Smile,” Damien murmured, his lips barely moving as he leaned closer. “Let’s give them a show.”
A show? She doubted her skills as an actress but what could she do? This was all part of what she signed.
Isla forced herself to take a deep breath, her chest tightening as she lifted her chin and curved her lips into a small, controlled smile. She could feel the weight of hundreds of eyes on her, the whispers and murmurs growing louder as they approached the red carpet.
"Damien Blackwood… married?!"
"Isn't this Nate Hayes's ex-wife?"
"Mr. Blackwood! Why are you with Mr. Hates ex-wife?"
The questions came rapid-fire, but Damien didn’t stop to answer. He kept moving, his grip on Isla’s hand firm. She could feel the tension in his posture, the way he exuded control even amid chaos.
~~~

Meanwhile, across town, Nate was in the middle of one of his company's quarterly board meetings when the vibration from his smartphone interrupted him. He ignored it at first, focusing on the meeting, but the vibration refused to stop. Finally, with an irritated sigh, he excused himself into the hallway, and Vanessa followed behind.

His new wife, Vanessa, also a member of the board and who was seated right next to him, shot him a questioning look.

“What’s going on?” Vanessa asked, her brow furrowed as Nate pulled out his phone.

The moment he unlocked his phone, his face went pale. The first photograph that appeared was his ex-wife, Isla, standing beside Damien Blackwood, her hand resting on his arm.

Nate’s stomach dropped as he zoomed in, his heart pounding in his chest. There is no mistake, that was Isla, and she was with him.

"Holy hell!" He muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. Vanessa leaned in, her eyes widened as she took in the image.

"No way,” she said, her voice tingling with disbelief.

“There’s no way she moved on that fast. She was at my house just a few days ago. She didn’t look… married.”

Nate wiped the sweat from his temple before zooming the picture just to be double sure.

But there was no mistake.

Nate wiped a hand over his face, his mind racing. “What the hell is she doing with him?” he muttered, more to himself than to Vanessa.

~~~
Back at the event, the chaos showed no signs of slowing down. A bold reporter managed to push through the crowd, shoving a microphone toward Damien.
"Mr. Blackwood, is this marriage real? Why are you with Nate Hayes' ex-wife?" She demanded, her voice cutting through the silence.
The room seemed to hold its breath as all eyes turned on Damien.
Damien glanced at Isla, who was trying hard not to look hit by the question, before turning back to the reporters. Without warning, he wrapped an arm around Isla's waist and pulled her close. Before she could react, his lips were on hers.
“Hun!” Everyone gasped.
Isla’s body went stiff on instinct and her eyes went wide. She could not help but play along however his lips sent a weird sensation through her, making her respond to the kiss in a way that felt dangerously real.
At this point, the cameras were not flashing, they were exploding, a few people even clapped while the others watched through their opened mouths.
And just like that, the world had registered her as Damien Blackwood’s wife.
~~~

Hours later, back at Damien's penthouse, Isla barely waited a second for the door to close before spinning around to face him.

“Why did you kiss me?” she demanded with a mix of anger and confusion.

Damien loosened his tie, looking as unbothered as ever. “You’ll have to get used to it,” he said, his voice low and steady. “This is just the beginning.”

Isla stared at him, her chest rising and falling with rapid breaths. The realization hit her like a punch to the gut. This wasn’t just a game. It was his game. And she had stepped onto the board with a man who never lost.

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 98: I'm not Breaking, I'm Bilding

    At Dawson McMahon’s hospital bed, Isla’s weak frame was lying on one of the blue-sheeted beds at ward 19. Her face was looking pale against the pillow.Surrounding her were those who mattered most to her in life: her parents alongside her sister Sophia, standing and watching with faces heavy with concern mixed with gloom.Then Caden, who had both of his hands in his pockets and eyes fixed on her.Finally, there was Tiara, who kept strolling back and forth from the wall to check on her after every 10 seconds.Things remained like this for a few minutes until the moment Isla stirred on her bed.Her hand twitched under the sheets, followed by a soft, sleepy groan.Then, very gradually, she started to open her eyes.It was the ceiling that came into view first.Then she started to turn slowly only to be greeted by the familiar faces hovering over her.At first, they were a blur, like figments of imagination.But when she blinked again, making it really slow and careful, her mother’s face,

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 97: And Then, Her World Collapsed

    The next morning Isla awoke, blinked hard, and let out a low groan as she slowly observed the dark room she suddenly found herself in. It was wide, exclusive, and unfamiliar. Nothing rang a bell. But judging from the little she could see, everything was screaming hotel room. “Wait… a hotel room?” What was she doing in a hotel room? She sat up quickly, placing one palm on her pounding head. “What the hell…” For a long, suspended second, everything was blank. But then, very slowly, the flood of memories before her blackout started to return. Isla gasped, letting out a breath of panic, searching until her fingers found the nearby light switch. She pressed it, and like magic, the shadows instantly vanished from the room. And then she saw him…someone. A figure lying on the couch at the far end of the room. For a second she thought the dizziness was still in her system. She blinked, wiped her face once, then looked again properly. But no, she wasn't dreami

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 96: The Boss

    Isabella’s arrival at the downtown hotel room was still very fresh, yet the walls were already starting to feel too tight for her. Her breathing kept coming in short bursts, her arms folding and unfolding by themselves as she walked from one wall to the next furiously. The memory of how she left Damien’s house had returned again to torment her. This was probably the twelfth time she was flashing back to that night. Her first ejection was bad, but this second one was ten times worse. She just could not erase it from her head: the humiliation, the look on Isla’s smug face as she stood beside Damien like some triumphant queen. The way she… Isabella of all people had been forced to shrink back, to leave in disgrace, like some desperate, broken piece of trash…it was unforgivable. She let out a rush of hot breath and then paused to whisper with her eyes narrowed. “That witch” That wretch… She had bitten off more than she could chew. But tonight… It was going to be a turning poi

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 95: What Game Are you Playing?

    It was early evening.Damien and Collins were seated at their usual spot at the rooftop bar with two lowball glasses set before them.However, today they had rare company in their midst. In the person of no one else but Isla’s younger sister…Sophia Carter.She had actually stopped by only moments ago, still dressed in the clothes she wore to work. She wasn’t here to join them for drinks. This was business… secret business.She had come as planned, just as she and her in-law had discussed earlier a few days ago.There was something she was here to collect from Damien, and that was a white, embossed envelope with a soft golden seal. Inside it was the official planning and early guest list for a major event Isla had no clue yet was coming…a surprise wedding. It was supposed to be the final stroke to crown all the struggles and tough victories the couples had experienced together in the past few weeks.So right now, Damien was handing the envelope to her with a calm smile as he murmur

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 94: The Dead Don't Lie

    "Can the dead live again?"That was the question hanging in the air as almost everyone in the room stood back with arms frozen to observe the unbelievable sight. Some were still staring, stiff with denial. Others blinked over and over again as if hoping that the image would flash and disappear. But Richard did not disappear. He remained in one place, solid and breathing.Then slowly and very steadily his gaze started to move towards the side of the room where the so-called family lawyer was sitting.Barrister Edward had not so much as blinked since Richard first appeared seconds ago. Now, with the full heat of those resurrected eyes on him, Edward could not help but tremble on his seat.His throat was openly bobbing with effort, but words failed him.Finally Richard opened his mouth to speak, and the first three words from his mouth sounded like gunshots.“How dare you?”Several people gasped. Someone at the back jerked involuntarily.And as for the lawyer himself, he nearly leap

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 93: Not Yet, Dear

    The following morning after his father’s passing, Damien had woken quite early.He was before his reflection again this morning.The expression on his face was hard to read except to his wife… Isla.She was right beside him again, just like yesterday, gently adjusting the collar as it is with their little tradition.But unlike yesterday, she didn’t speak. Her silence was soft and quiet in understanding.It carried respect for his grief.Her eyes lingered on his face, thinking about everything again.It was true that Damien and his late dad had not been close for most of his life. Yes, the man had been absent, cold, and unreachable. But Richard Blackwood was still the only father Damien ever had.The one person who, even in his final days on earth, had tried imperfectly to mend what he had broken. It wasn’t enough, but it was something.And now even he too was gone forever?Isla let out an inaudible sigh, reaching out to fix a cufflink now.A few seconds after this, a sharp sound f
