تسجيل الدخولEmily's big reveal was postponed for a moment by Damian's words.
"Emily, there is something you need to know about my family before you tell me why you wanted to see me."
Emily faced him.
"What is that?" She asked.
Damian kept his eyes fixed on the road.
"My dad wasn't who I believed he was," he stated.
Emily scowled and said, "What do you mean by that?"
For a few seconds, Damian remained silent.
"For years, I was convinced I knew everything about my family," he said. "I was mistaken."
She carefully watched him.
"Is Thomas Reed involved in this?" " Emily questioned.
He gave her a look and asked, "Do you recall that name?"
"You previously told me about him," Emily stated.
"Okay, I remember telling you," Damian responded. “And I should have given you additional information.”
Emily's heart tightened. "Why didn't you?" She asked.
Damian said, "Because I didn't know what was real." "And I didn't want to get you involved in something I hadn't figured out myself."
Emily looked out the window. The city passed quietly outside.
"What has changed?" She asked.
Damian held a stronger grip on the steering wheel.
Someone I know advised me to come clean.
“Who was that?” She asked. But Damian deliberately refused to answer the question. He continued with, “I remember inquiring about Thomas from my father. He claimed it was a matter of business.”
"And did you trust him?" Emily asked.
Damian said, "I was younger." "I had every reason to do so."
A peculiar heaviness descended upon Emily. She had purposely stayed away from the investigation even though she had tried for weeks to figure out what was going on at Carter Holdings.
Damian was currently rekindling the discussion about the past.
"Why are you telling me this now?" Emily asked.
“Because I discovered something lately,” Damian said.
As soon as he said that, Emily gazed hard at him.
"What have you discovered?" She asked.
Damian did not respond immediately.
Instead, he drove into a quiet parking spot that looked out over the city.
He switched off the engine and came to a halt.
Emily stayed put.
Damian finally faced her.
"I discovered a paper among my father's outdated items," he stated.
"What sort of document?" Emily questioned.
"A log of the transactions." He answered.
"With Thomas Reed?" Damian nodded and said, "Yes."
Emily's heart started racing.
"What was the content?"
Damian stuck his hand into the inner pocket of his jacket. He took out a folded sheet of paper.
"I haven't shown this to anybody," he said.
She gazed at it intently. “Not even Olivia,” he said.
He stretched out his hands and gave it to Emily but she paused before taking it.
The paper was old and the ink had faded in certain spots.
She gently opened it.
Her gaze passed across the page.
She paused at a point.
"What is it?" Damian asked but Emily did not respond.
She kept her gaze fixed on a single line.
There were a number of names listed underneath the date.
Thomas Reed, Mr Knight, and she recognized another name immediately.
She began to breathe differently.
Emily whispered, "Damian."
"What?" He asked.
She gave him a glance.
"Why does my father's name appear here?"
Damian's expression shifted.
For a few seconds, there was no conversation between the two of them.
Once again, Emily gazed at the document.
Years had passed since her father's passing. Her parents, she knew, had never been involved with Damian's family.
However, the week Damian's father passed away, his name appeared on an old recording.
Damian took the paper from her.
"I wasn't aware your father had anything to do with this," he stated.
Emily shook her head and said "He wasn't."
"How can you know?" Damian asked.
"Because my parents never said a word about your family to me," Emily responded. "And they couldn't have been aware of what happened to your parents."
Damian examined the paper and said "I'm aware."
The quietness in the car got uncomfortable.
Slowly, Emily's hand went to her stomach.
She had come here with the intention of telling Damian that she was pregnant.
But right now, she was at a loss for words.
So she thought not yet. Because there was a little too much happening.
"I must know why your father's name is listed here," he said as he folded the paper containing the report.
Emily was still reluctant to announce that she was pregnant. Perhaps not tonight, she thought.
But before either of them could speak further, Damian's phone started to ring.
He looked at the screen.
His face immediately changed.
"Who is it?" Emily asked but she didn't get any response from Damian.
He simply looked at the name and finally answered the call.
"Hello?" He said, as the color left his face.
The voice at the other end said something inaudible and Damian gradually lowered the phone.
He cast his gaze at her.
"It is about my dad," he explained.
"What happened?" Asked Emily.
Damian took a gulp and said,
"Something else has been discovered.”
Margaret had convinced herself for years that Thomas Reed was no longer in her life until a single phone call shattered that comforting fiction."Where is he?" Margaret questioned firmly. The man on the other end of the line stopped for a moment."We don't know precisely where he is," he said in response. "However, he was seen in Manhattan by someone."Margaret's hands clenched the edge of her desk."After all this time, he chooses to return now?"The man said to her, "He may not have returned for you."Margaret was quiet. She was more terrified by that notion than by anything else.Thomas was the chief of security for her deceased husband. He was also there when Emily's parents began investigating shady financial dealings involving Carter Holdings.Emily's parents then died. After that, Thomas disappeared swiftly.Margaret had never pressed too hard for answers as to why he vanished. She had put too much effort into protecting herself and establishing her position as Emily's guardian
Despite surviving too many secrets, Margaret was afraid of opening a mere door. Her hands trembled at the sound of footsteps outside of her study. She inserted the photo into the drawer, secured it, and then the door opened.Behold, it was Ryan. For a while, mother and son gazed at one another in silence.Margaret was the first to regain her composure."You should have knocked, Ryan," Margaret commented."You should have picked up your phone," Ryan said in response."I've been occupied.""What are you busy with?"Margaret raised an eyebrow."Must I explain my daily schedule to my own son?""No. However, perhaps you should explain how a photo of Emily's parents is hidden in your house."Margaret's face went white.just for a second. She smiled after that."Isn't it true that Emily has been asking questions once again?" Margaret inquired."What bothers you about it?""I know how readily old family matters can be misinterpreted."He gave her a thorough examination."Some kind of family m
It seemed as though the air in the room was being pulled in by that image.Emily noticed the unfamiliar man standing beside her parents.Sophia moved nearer."Do you know him?" Sophia asked.Emily shook her head from side to side."No," Emily replied. "I've never seen him before."Ryan kept his gaze fixed on the picture and answered, "I have."Emily turned sharply."Where?" Emily asked.Ryan hesitated."I can't recall his name.""That's not what I asked," Emily said.Ryan stared at her."I met him once when I was younger. At my mom's house."Sophia's expression grew hard."Margaret was acquainted with him?" Sophia asked.Ryan answered, "I believe so.""Do you think so?" Emily asked.Ryan rubbed his forehead.“She never gave any explanation for the people who came and went around my mother.”Emily looked at the picture once more."Why would my parents be involved with this man?"Ryan didn't have an answer.Neither did Sophia. For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Emily noticed something."W
Ryan had been avoiding Emily for weeks, but now that he understood he needed to see her, every route appeared to bring him back to her.Emily expected another update regarding the divorce when she arrived at Sophia's office the next afternoon.Upon spotting Ryan at Sophia's desk, she stopped. Her heart felt like it was tightening."What are you doing here?" Emily asked.Ryan stood on his feet and said, "I asked Sophia for a meeting."Emily said, "You should have checked with me first.""I suspected you would say no," Ryan replied."So at last, you know me well enough to say that," she said. For a moment, he looked at her."I heard you still want to go ahead with the divorce," he said."Yes, I will,” she replied."Are you happy?" He asked.Emily nearly laughed."Is that what you came here to ask?" She said "No,” he replied."Then ask what brought you here," she said.Ryan turned his gaze to Sophia."I've found out something regarding your inheritance."Emily's expression shifted."Wha
Even though Damian shut the penthouse door, the quietness between them seemed like another obstacle that neither of them knew how to remove.Emily gripped her bag tightly as she remained at the door.Damian watched her for a brief period of time."You came," Damian said.Emily replied, "You asked me to come."Damian said, "I wasn't sure you'd show up.""I also had some reservations," Emily said. They went into the living room.Emily recalled the last time she had been in that place. She had been keeping something hidden.Damian was now aware of it.But the secret's weight had increased in some way."Do you want a beverage?"Damian askedEmily replied, "No, thank you.""Would you like coffee?" Damian extended an offer.Emily nearly smiled at that."You know lately, coffee hasn't been my friend," she said.Damian said, "I remember."The quiet came back.Damian's attention briefly shifted to her before he averted his gaze. And Emily also looked at him quietly."You've been thinking about
Damian had been struggling with the urge to ask a single question all night, and by morning, it was all he could think about.Emily stood in front of Sophia's flat, observing as the grey morning enveloped Manhattan. She had barely slept.Damian didn't reject her because of it.Infact, he had not rejected her at all. However, he had made a very clear point by not saying anything. The door was opened by Sophia."You're here ahead of time," remarked Sophia.Emily said, "I couldn't sleep."Sophia gave her face a look."Has Damian called?"Emily said, "Yes.""And?"Emily averted her eyes.He is eager to meet with me this evening.Sophia waited patiently. What Emily was actually asking was understood by her.“Does he trust you?” Sophia asked but Emily replied, "He wants time," instead.Sophia nodded her head slowly."Time has the potential to mean many different things," she said "I know," Emily said."What does it mean to you, then?" Sophia asked.A weak grin was all that Emily could must
