My hands trembled as I climbed the stairs, the fancy nylon bag swinging at my side. Every step felt like an escape, every beat of my heart like a drum urging me onward.

I didn’t stop until I was inside my room, and as the muffled echoes of Antonio and Luca’s argument rose from downstairs, I leaned against my door, my chest heaving.

I couldn’t tell if it was sheer hunger or tiredness. I shut my eyes, whispering to herself, “This house is tearing apart… and I’m right in the middle of it.”

I pushed the door shut behind me and leaned my back against it again, releasing a heavy sigh that left my chest hollow.

The air in the room felt tight, and I shuddered as though I had been gasping for fresh air all day but hadn’t managed to find any.

My knees weakened, and I slid down the door until I was sitting on the floor, slumped like a child who had been scolded one too many times.

Dejected!

That was the word.

I felt so dejected and small, like a girl who had been rough-handled, discarded,

Anna’s eyes darted around the bush bar as though expecting someone to appear from nowhere. Carol noticed how uneasy she looked and without saying a word, Anna led her through a narrow path behind the bar, their feet crunching against dry leaves and small stones. The air was warm, filled with the faint smell of red wine and roasted meat coming from the bar they had just left. After a short walk, they came out into an open space that was unexpectedly calm. It was a small garden tucked behind tall trees, where the sound of birds echoed faintly.Anna stopped there and turned to face Carol, her hands shook slightly as she rolled up the sleeve of her blouse. “Look,” She said, pointing to a tattoo just above her wrist.Carol frowned, unsure of what Anna meant but when her eyes settled on the symbol, something clicked deep inside her and her heart skipped. Without thinking, she pulled down the strap of her own blouse, revealing the same mark on her shoulder blade. “How… how do you have

Antonio stood by the window of his study, his hands resting on the edge of the curtain as he watched Carol’s car disappear through the open gate. He wasn’t used to quiet, he wasn’t used to feeling unsure either, but Carol had managed to twist something inside him that his pretense couldn’t ignoreHe’d noticed her change. The sharpness in her tone had softened. The way she looked at him no longer carried the same sting of hatred or suspicion. She still tried to keep her distance, but the walls around her were crumbling, little by little, even the kiss earlier, though sudden, had told him everything he needed to know. He noticed she hadn’t fought him off but her body had stiffened at first, then she let him in. Still, he didn’t want to push too hard. Carol was not the kind of woman you won by force. He’d tried that before and nearly lost her entirely. Now, he wanted her to trust him again and he would do so slowly yet quietly. The problem was, he didn’t know how to do that without

I slid into my car, still feeling his presence on my skin and wondering if he believed my lie because whenever Antonio reminds you who you are and walks off in the manner that he did back there, be sure that his mind is fixed on you.I can’t tell why but my fingers trembled as I started the car engine. I made a slow reverse at once and halted the car, turning the wheels swiftly to push out the tyres and shift into drive. One of the men whom I had seen the other day when I was driving into the street began to advance towards me. His tattoos frowned at me before he even spotted me.He was tall and broad-chested and his shirt stretched slightly at the shoulders. I couldn’t see his face clearly this time, but that build, I remembered it too well. I noticed he wasn’t just passing by, he was coming straight for me, the same panic that gripped me the other day gripped me again. I didn’t wait to see what he wanted before my hand shot for the gear lever as I pressed down on the accelerator h

“Who the hell is that and why….” I allowed my voice to trail as I sat up at once on my bed with wide eyes, staring at my phone deeply lost in thought. The little sound it made when a message came in startled me and for a second, I didn’t even reach for it, I’d been too wrapped up in my own confusion and worry to care but then it clicked. I had texted Anna earlier today after Antonio left my room, about meeting up with her, and this must be her reply. How come I didn’t recognize her voice over the phone? My heart skipped, and I jumped up at once. The thought of seeing her again and getting answers sent a rush of energy through me. Quickly, I texted back, telling her I’d be there in a jiffy. If not for anything, the pressure Veronica was putting on me about that stupid video was enough reason to go. I couldn’t just sit around and wait for her to destroy me, I needed to act. Who knows if what she would share with me would relate to Veronica?I walked into the bathroom and decided to t

My heart hadn’t been beating so fast even when Veronica threatened me but with this statement she had made, it raced to its peak because it now dawned on me that she has more leverage on me than I ever thought.Chills ran down my spine as I walked out of her room. What I did first was to lean on the wall with my hand on my forehead like one who was just getting to know that she had made a costly mistake.Suddenly, the entrance door opened and I heard Luca’s deep and warm voice floating through the house as always. “Carol?!” He called out casually from the living room, having both a questioning and a surprised look on his expression. I jerked up from the wall where I had leaned on at once and walked non-stop to the bannister without even acknowledging his call.“Carol, is everything alright?” Luca asked as I walked up energetically and paused only when he started talking again. My hand gripped the banister, unsure if I wanted to answer him or not. Just before I could even decide to

“How foolish can this girl be?” I mumbled beneath my breath, fuming at the insult and lack of shame on her path.I was already getting so upset that Veronica had the audacity to bring a man into the house, but when I thought about it more, anger completely took over. Who did she think she was? This wasn’t some cheap motel, it was my home, and Antonio’s and she must respect that whether she likes it or not.One mind said to run after Antonio and tell him straight up but another mind said to hold on and give her the benefit of doubt. I didn’t even stop to think, I marched straight down to her room, ready to give her a piece of my mind.As I neared her room, I could still hear the faint moans from inside. I frowned, pressing my ear to the door. The moans were even more intensified now than before and without thinking twice, I pushed the door open. The sight that greeted me made me gasp instantly and turn away in disgust. Veronica was sprawled on the bed with her gown bunched up to he
