I stepped into the study without much thought, but the moment I got in, I couldn’t tell what it was but the air was awkward. Antonio sat behind the desk, maps scattered across the surface, his face hard and cold like he had been engaged in a great deal of argument before I got in.

I looked to the extreme of the room and saw Veronica’s hands sliding through the portraits of the champions from Antonio’s favorite sport which he had pasted on the wall. I wondered what gave her the effrontery to do such in the office of one who usually bever tolerated nonsense.

I mean, Antonio was brutal and I know it, so why? I asked myself looking from Veronica’s body to him without uttering a word.

Normally, Veronica would have acted like she was trespassing and cautioned herself but the more she noticed that my eyes were on her, it was as though it fueled her audacity to be even more daring and stupid.

She walked away from the portraits and stood right in front of Antonio but opposite looking strangely

I broke down sobbing even more at the look on Elena’s face, because for her to be angry with me meant that I had truly messed up but I still couldn’t help it. I love Luca, I mean my heart has clipped to him fondly.Elena drew closer to where I sat and rubbed small circles across my back, trying to calm me, though her words were sharp. She leaned closer, her voice low but it was all that I needed to hear.“Tell me, Carol… Be honest with me, how does it feel to commit something as twisted as incest?” She asked, and I wouldn’t know if she asked out of sheer curiosity or sarcastically but I didn’t like the sound of that question at all.“Come on, Elena!”“What?” She frowned, sounding like she didn't know what she had just done. The word alone cut through me, and I flinched as if she had slapped me. My throat burned, but I lifted my head to face her, my eyes wet and stinging.“Don’t judge me, Elena,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “You don’t know everything. You don’t know what I’ve been

I could hear the sound of Veronica’s laughter trailing me. It wasn’t the kind of laugh that came from joy, it was sharp and cruel like the kind that made my stomach knot. I turned and called after her, my voice cracking. “Veronica!” I called but she was gone. The echo of her heels faded into silence, leaving me with only the memory of that wicked laugh. My hands trembled as I pressed them against the doorframe. I wanted to run after her, shake her until she told me what proof she thought she had, but my legs wouldn’t move. My chest felt tight, and I knew if I stayed here any longer, I’d collapse under the weight of everything spinning through my head.So I forced myself to leave. Outside, the cool air brushed against my skin, but it didn’t calm me. I slid into the back of the car, shut the door harder than I meant to, and signaled to the driver.“Take me to the mall,” I said quickly, my voice lower than usual. He nodded, and the car rolled forward. I tried to steady my breathing,

Veronica moved slowly into the study, her steps light as though she wanted no one to notice her. She paused just beyond the doorway, her fingers brushing the edge of the wooden frame before she let them fall to her side. Her whole body seemed to hold a strange mix of shyness and boldness, like she wasn’t sure if she should be there at all, yet couldn’t stop herself from stepping in.Antonio, seated behind the heavy desk, lifted his head. His eyes met hers, and in that instant, surprise flashed across his face. He hadn’t expected to see her and so his expression tightened, as if he was already questioning what business she could possibly have barging into his private space.Veronica didn’t speak right away, she just stood there, looking at him as though the very sight of him had caught her off guard. She let her gaze linger on his broad shoulders, the way he leaned slightly forward, his hands resting on the table covered in maps and documents. In her mind, thoughts spilled out faster

As soon as Antonio entered his study from Carol’s room, Marco stood across the desk, his fingers drumming lightly against the edge of the table. Antonio had returned only the day before, and already his grand show of affection toward Carol was the subject of murmurs in the house. Marco had been patient, watching the gestures pile up, but now, inside the privacy of Antonio’s study, he felt the need to speak.“Boss Antonio,” Marco began carefully, his voice low and even. “I need to tell you something, and I hope you’ll take it in the spirit I mean it. The way you’re acting toward Carol… it’s too much. It doesn’t feel real, and she’s going to notice. She’s not the type of woman who enjoys being smothered.” He said pointedly.Antonio, who had been bent over a stack of papers, straightened slowly, his eyes narrowed as he studied Marco. “Too much?” he repeated, his tone sharp. “I’m showing her what she deserves. Do you think there’s anything wrong with reminding her of her place here?” He

Antonio’s return was something I hadn’t expected to feel so overwhelming. The whole house shifted the moment he walked in.People greeted him like a hero, their voices filled with excitement, and Marco followed behind with stacks of documents in his arms. Antonio laid out the maps he had gathered, pointing to the routes and explaining the dangers he had crossed. His energy filled the room, and everyone leaned in to listen.I should have been focused on the maps too, but my eyes kept pulling back to him. Not because I missed him but because he was acting so differently. His attention never left me and every little thing I did, his eyes followed. If I reached for a glass, he snatched it first and poured water for me. If I shifted in my chair, he was there adjusting it, pulling it closer and then, without hesitation, he brushed a strand of hair behind my ear in front of everyone.I felt my cheeks warm, but not out of affection but out of unease. Antonio had seldom been warm with me, y
