By the time I got to the mansion the next evening, it was past seven, and the place looked different.

It was now more polished and formal. The long dining table had been set with gold-trimmed plates and silverware that hadn't seen daylight in months.

Carol was already seated there.

Sitting near the end of the table, her back straight, her hair pulled into this sleek twist that made her look untouchable and dangerous.

Her dress was deep red, almost the color of wine, and it fit like it had been sewn onto her skin.

I could tell she was uncomfortable, though. She kept her hands clasped tightly on her lap. Her smile was forced, but I was the only one who could see it.

Antonio sat beside her, all smiles and charm, his hand occasionally brushing her shoulder like he owned her. I felt my jaw clench so hard I nearly cracked a molar.

“Luca,” my father’s voice rang out as I approached. “Glad you could join us.”

I kissed his cheek and greeted the others politely, sliding into the seat opposit

  • His Father's Obsession, I fell in love with his son.    Chapter 197: Carol's POV

My heart hadn’t been beating so fast even when Veronica threatened me but with this statement she had made, it raced to its peak because it now dawned on me that she has more leverage on me than I ever thought.Chills ran down my spine as I walked out of her room. What I did first was to lean on the wall with my hand on my forehead like one who was just getting to know that she had made a costly mistake.Suddenly, the entrance door opened and I heard Luca’s deep and warm voice floating through the house as always. “Carol?!” He called out casually from the living room, having both a questioning and a surprised look on his expression. I jerked up from the wall where I had leaned on at once and walked non-stop to the bannister without even acknowledging his call.“Carol, is everything alright?” Luca asked as I walked up energetically and paused only when he started talking again. My hand gripped the banister, unsure if I wanted to answer him or not. Just before I could even decide to

“How foolish can this girl be?” I mumbled beneath my breath, fuming at the insult and lack of shame on her path.I was already getting so upset that Veronica had the audacity to bring a man into the house, but when I thought about it more, anger completely took over. Who did she think she was? This wasn’t some cheap motel, it was my home, and Antonio’s and she must respect that whether she likes it or not.One mind said to run after Antonio and tell him straight up but another mind said to hold on and give her the benefit of doubt. I didn’t even stop to think, I marched straight down to her room, ready to give her a piece of my mind.As I neared her room, I could still hear the faint moans from inside. I frowned, pressing my ear to the door. The moans were even more intensified now than before and without thinking twice, I pushed the door open. The sight that greeted me made me gasp instantly and turn away in disgust. Veronica was sprawled on the bed with her gown bunched up to he

I couldn’t stop thinking about what had just happened. Veronica helping me to clean up the space I had used didn’t sit right. I stood there for a few seconds, staring at the half-empty glass of juice on the counter, my mind turning in circles. It wasn’t like her to go out of her way for me. She wasn’t exactly unfriendly, but she’d never shown this kind of sudden kindness to me except she wanted something in return either. I tried to shake it off and told myself I was just being paranoid, but the thought clung to me like glue. Why would Veronica help me? What would she gain from it? I had learned the hard way that in this house, every favor had a price and that everyone had motives with some hidden so deep that it took years to see them clearly.I leaned against the counter, remembering the last time she’d handled anything that went into things edible and my heart sank as my mouth opened in stark recall. That night, he had collapsed in front of everyone and I wondered what would

I didn’t remember scheduling any meeting with Giovanni Romano, so when I saw him sitting comfortably at the far end of the boardroom table, it threw me off, especially because he sat there like he owned the place. His legs were slightly apart, a smug look on his face, as though he was watching a game he’d already won, even the corners of his lips had a little smirk on them.I swallowed down my confusion and willed myself to act like he wasn’t there and addressed the other investors who were still seated and awaiting the final conclusions regarding the deals we had closed earlier. I looked at them like I had never seen their faces before and as though they looked completely different from the first time they had approached the company. Suddenly my palms began to sweat and my thoughts were a mess, but I managed to keep my expression neutral. “Are you okay, Mr. Conte?” One of them asked, tweaking his brows in a way that communicated confusion.“Er…mm… I’m fine, sure!” I almost stammer

“Shouldn’t I?” I looked at Antonio, wondering why he’d suddenly taken such an interest in me. We were married, yes but this wasn’t the usual kind of attention he gave me. Something in his eyes had changed and I can swear that it wasn’t anger or frustration anymore, it was curiosity and it almost made me nervous. He rose from the bed and walked toward me, slow and deliberate, like a man who’d already made up his mind about his next step. When he stopped in front of me, he placed his hands on my waist and firmly gripped me, his face was close to mine and his voice quiet when he spoke.“You can trust me, Carol,” he said softly. “With whatever news you get from digging into that tattoo’s origin.”His breath brushed against my ear, and it made my chest tighten. I blinked, unsure how to respond. Digging into the tattoo? I hadn’t even agreed to do that from my heart. What’s all this about?First, he’d asked me about my father, and now this. My curiosity was awake now, but I didn’t ask q

There was something about the way he asked that made my stomach twist, his tone wasn’t casual anymore and it carried a kind of weight, like he wasn’t just asking out of curiosity but out of something else entirely.I studied him for a moment, trying to understand why he was suddenly so interested. The man who just accused me of cheating was now asking about my father? It didn’t make sense.“I don’t know him,” I answered finally. “My mother never told me who he was. I don’t even have a picture. Why?”He didn’t answer right away, he just kept his eyes on me and then, almost too quietly, he said, “Just asking.”I could tell Antonio’s question wasn’t really about my father, it never was. He was trying to pick a fight over something else, but I wasn’t going to let him twist the conversation.“But that’s not what this is about,” I protested, folding my arms and staring at him. “Your anger earlier had nothing to do with my father. Why are you suddenly bringing up a man I’ve never even met i
