By the time I got to the mansion the next evening, it was past seven, and the place looked different.

It was now more polished and formal. The long dining table had been set with gold-trimmed plates and silverware that hadn't seen daylight in months.

Carol was already seated there.

Sitting near the end of the table, her back straight, her hair pulled into this sleek twist that made her look untouchable and dangerous.

Her dress was deep red, almost the color of wine, and it fit like it had been sewn onto her skin.

I could tell she was uncomfortable, though. She kept her hands clasped tightly on her lap. Her smile was forced, but I was the only one who could see it.

Antonio sat beside her, all smiles and charm, his hand occasionally brushing her shoulder like he owned her. I felt my jaw clench so hard I nearly cracked a molar.

“Luca,” my father’s voice rang out as I approached. “Glad you could join us.”

I kissed his cheek and greeted the others politely, sliding into the seat opposit

Antonio’s face looked as though it had been stoned as Carol’s words sank into him. His voice dropped low at first but picked up its tone later on.“And who are you, Carol?” he asked, his eyes narrowing as if he was trying to peel her open like a book. “What exactly are you in this empire of mine? Do you think you are indispensable?”Carol straightened her back, her hands trembling at her sides but her chin rising with defiance. “I am your wife, Antonio and that…” She jabbed her finger against her chest “…is enough. It should be enough.”Her boldness shocked even herself. She literally could feel her heart pounding so hard she thought he could hear it, but she refused to flinch.Antonio’s lips curved into a bitter sneer. He leaned closer, his voice laced with contempt. “A wife should know her place….”“Which is?” Carol demanded.“A wife cooks, obeys and keeps her mouth shut. She warms her husband’s bed, bears his children, and never questions his word. That is what a wife should be do

“Aren’t you aware at all?” Veronica looked at him, asking. “Aware of what?” Luca frowned and asked to the curiosity of even Carol who stood by with heaviness in her heart. She wasn’t sure if liked what played out before her eyes but was eager to know where Luca’s heart lie in all of it.“We are betrothed to be together….”“I see that you have been brainwashed, but the earlier you woke from your daydreaming, the better for you,” Luca replied with a thick disgust.Carol looked at the both of them and wondered for a moment at Veronica’s sharp dismissal earlier, the words still stinging in her ears. She could sense immediately that there was something about Veronica’s tone and even her body language that was not entirely sincere. She was sounding way too calculated and too rehearsed and that didn’t sit well with her but she uttered no word of it anyone, she just kept her senses peeled for anymore of her gimmicks.Even Luca caught the faint scent of deceit, though his suspicions weren’t

“Can I have another glass of water?” Antonio demanded, making Carol’s eyes flutter to the first glass she brought which was still on the tray.“How about that?” She asked, using her head to point to the direction of the tray.“Watch and see,” Antonio murmured, taking the glass from the tray and gulping all the contents in.“That wasn’t for you,” Carol tried to let him know, looking in the direction of Veronica who still laid like she was a log of hard and dry wood.“Well, get some more and quit questioning me,” Antonio ordered, lifting his head and looking at the stairs. Carol’s eyes followed where his eyes had settled to see Luca standing at the head of the staircase, looking blankly at them.“I thought you walked away?” Antonio asked sarcastically, looking at him with that familiar look of disgust in his eyes.“I did but….”“Why then are you peeping?” Antonio intercepted his sentence, his hand hovering over Veronica as she turned on the couch.Luca scoffed. “You should be calling t

Antonio’s hand lingered a moment too long on Veronica’s shoulder after he eased her onto the couch. His brows furrowed in genuine concern, but the scene itself carried a dramatic wave to it, as though the house had been turned into a stage. Veronica’s lashes fluttered, her lips parted slightly, and she let out a weak sigh, milking the moment with subtle drama.Carol stood nearby, her fingers tightening against the tray she had carried the water on. She had seen real fainting and knew that this wasn’t it, yet she said nothing. She simply set the glass down, her movements composed but her eyes sharp, watchful, and pointing out every detail. The rise and fall of Veronica’s chest, the way her hand remained delicately perched against her temple looked way too deliberate, too practised.Luca, on the other hand, hadn’t moved a muscle since the announcement. He leaned casually against the bar, though the rigid set of his jaw betrayed his fury. His dark eyes flicked from his father to Ver

“This may be his house but he is still a stranger to me,” Luca replied to Carol who was grateful that he hadn’t prodded further into the reason she was just walking into the house at the time she did.“Where is Clara by the way?” Carol asked rhetorically but Luca picked up on it and gave a sarcastic reply.Outside the mansion, Antonio stepped down from the SUV, his movements brisk and deliberate, the faint crunch of gravel under his shoes disturbing the quiet of the night. Without a word, he moved to the passenger side, pulled open the door, and extended his hand. This was something he seldom did to anyone. Maybe it was because of the pact and the rules attached to it. He was one of the most feared mafia gangs after the late Cesare Rosetti, Carol’s father. He mellowed down for no one but was doing so now because he needed to get something from Govannni, seeing that he knew some of his hidden trade routes. Perhaps, his casket of wealth may be hidden in one of those.Veronica emerged

“You look startled.” I muttered, drawing closer and closer to her. It was as though she was catching her breath from running for so long. I wonder how I hadn’t noticed that.“What are you saying?” Carol replied with a heavy frown contorting her face.“You tell me,” I opened the floor with a gesture of my hand. By now, I had gotten closer to her but I was also not too free to hold her waist as I had the urge to do so, especially not after how our communication had been after the engagement my father made earlier.I let out a low chuckle, the kind that rumbled deep in my chest but it never fully escaped into the open. The corners of my mouth lifted as I swirled the glass in my hand, letting the liquid catch the connect with the light and leave a glimmer. I took another slow sip, the warmth coating my throat, not because I craved the taste but because it was what I always did when I needed to think straight. I just couldn’t resist the urged to drown in alcohol whenever I was in a down m
