Chapter 4

Author: Hyacinth
Vanessa came to my office while I was emptying the desk.

“I'm taking everyone to dinner tonight. You should come.”

“No, thank you.”

I wrapped the framed photograph of Finn in my scarf and laid it in the box.

“Don't be like that. It's a celebration.”

“Then enjoy it.”

I lifted the box.

Behind me, she said, “Ten years, Mara. And all I had to do was come home.”

My wolf stirred, hurt and furious beneath my ribs.

I kept walking.

That afternoon, Vanessa announced her promotion in the council group chat. Adrian was the first to congratulate her.

A moment later, he sent me a private message.

Don't read anything into it. You know how these things work.

I did now.

While they celebrated, I packed.

Finn appeared in the bedroom doorway, carrying the stuffed wolf he'd had since he was a baby.

“Are we going tonight?”

I knelt beside the suitcase.

“We can, if you want.”

He worried the wolf's ear between his fingers.

“Could we wait until tomorrow? Dad said there's a surprise.” He looked ashamed of wanting it. “Maybe I'll wish that he doesn't do the ceremony. Maybe if it's my birthday wish, he'll listen.”

I put my hand against his cheek.

“We can wait.”

Adrian didn't come home.

Finn slept badly. Once, I woke to find him standing at the window, looking down at the drive.

By morning, he'd persuaded himself there was a reason.

“He must be getting the surprise ready.”

We made breakfast. Decorated the kitchen. I put eight candles in the cake I'd baked after Finn went to bed.

Every car on the road made him look up.

By evening, the candles had softened in the warm room. Finn hadn't asked to light them.

I called Adrian.

“It's your son's birthday. Where are you?”

There was music behind him. Glasses clinking.

“Right. Yes. His surprise is in the nightstand. The itinerary.”

“What itinerary?”

“I added him to your trip. Seven days in Norway with his mom. He'll love it.”

“You said you'd be here.”

“Mara, I'm in the middle of something. Don't start. Just take him on holiday.”

The call ended.

In the nightstand were both travel confirmations and the signed permission Finn needed to travel with me. Adrian had made sure neither of us would get in his way.

My phone lit up again.

A notification from his invented friend's account.

She deserved the vow I should have given her years ago.

The photograph showed Vanessa's hand beneath his. Beside them lay a transfer assigning her a share of Blackthorn's commercial holdings.

I had spent ten years building those holdings. Negotiating leases. Saving contracts. Doing the work of a dozen people while drawing an operations manager's salary.

He'd told me shares didn't matter between mates. Everything was ours.

Apparently that only applied when I asked.

“Mom?”

Finn stood beside the table, phone in hand.

On its screen, Lily held a cupcake. Adrian's hands were visible beneath hers, helping her steady it.

Daddy made these just for me.

Finn looked at the untouched birthday cake behind him.

“He knows how,” he said very quietly.

I didn't understand at first.

“Dad. He knows how to make a birthday nice.”

I reached for him, but he was already reaching for me.

“I don't want to wait anymore.” He wiped his face on his sleeve. “Can we go together?”

“Yes.”

“And you're coming too? You're not just taking me and leaving?”

I held him so tightly that he gave a little breath against my shoulder.

“I'm coming too.”

Before we left, I put the separation papers on the dining table. My lawyer had already filed for civil divorce and registered my departure with the independent pack council. Under its charter, a chosen bond could be renounced by either mate before a sworn witness. An Alpha's permission was not required.

I had checked every word twice.

Then Finn and I got on a plane.

Seven days later, I sat before a Northlight council witness, the bond ledger open between us. Finn was drawing by the window.

Adrian called as the Blackthorn council meeting began.

“Sweetheart, the meeting started ten minutes ago. Don’t tell me you’re still in Norway.”

I put him on speaker.

“Ten years ago, I chose you as my mate,” I said. “Today, I take that choice back.”

The witness signed the ledger.

Something inside me snapped. The mating mark beneath my collar began to fade.

A chair crashed on Adrian’s end.

“Mara, stop.” His voice shook. “What did you do?”

“I had someone look into why you came back,” Adrian said.Vanessa folded her arms.“And?”“Your husband threw you out after the affair. That's why you left his territory. You didn't spend ten years missing me.”“People say things.”“And Lily.”Vanessa went still. He didn't have proof about the child. Not yet. Only that frightened glance toward the sofa, and the way every tender moment seemed to happen exactly when Vanessa needed it.“She isn't your daughter, is she?”“Of course she is.”“Then you won't mind my Beta checking the records.”Her mouth opened. Closed. That was answer enough for him.“You brought a child into this?”“It wasn't like that.”“What was it like?”“She does acting work. Her guardian agreed. It was supposed to be temporary.” Vanessa's voice rose. “You liked having her here. You were happy.”Adrian looked toward the stairs. He thought of Finn asking for one small truck. Finn learning that silence could be bought, then discovering his father hadn't even intended to p

Mara saw him in the water and ran down the bank. She called for help. Caught his coat. Stayed with him until the rescue crew reached them, her fingers locked around his wrist even when she could barely feel them.Afterward, an infection kept her in the infirmary for nearly two weeks.Adrian visited because he owed her. At first, that was all.He never told her why he had gone into the river. She never demanded it.She talked instead about ordinary things. The terrible infirmary soup. A book she wanted to finish. The first clear morning after a week of snow.Little reasons to stay long enough for the next day.He began to look forward to seeing her. When he asked her out, she blushed. He remembered being pleased by how easily he could make her happy. His father objected. Mara had no lineage worth mentioning and no alliance to offer. An Alpha needed more than a kind woman beside him.She waited outside Magnus's office through an entire night because Adrian had asked her not to give up on

The line went silent.“His what?”“Did he mention the gifts he bought Lily while telling Finn that wanting a toy made him weak? Or the truck he offered our son in exchange for keeping his secret?”“Mara—”“Did he tell you where he was on Finn's birthday?”Magnus didn't interrupt again.I told him everything. The false account. The holiday. My job given away in front of the council. The shares. When I finished, I could hear him breathing.“That was wrong,” he said at last.“Yes.”“But he's my son.”“I know.”“I can't simply leave him like this.” His tone softened into something he probably meant as kindness. “Think about what you're giving up. You have a child. A new country. No standing there. How will you manage without Blackthorn?”I looked at the contract on my kitchen table. My name appeared beside the word Partner.“I've already started.”“Started what?”“A business. With people who value my work.”“You needn't make this harder on yourself to prove a point.”“I'm not proving anyth

Vanessa stared at him as though he'd spoken another language.“We agreed,” he said. “One ceremony. A few days. You said you needed closure.”“And you promised it would feel real.”“You said it wouldn't interfere with my family.”She gave a short laugh.“You sent your family out of the country so you could stand beside me in front of witnesses. You transferred shares to me. What exactly did you think you were doing?”“It wasn't a bond.”“No. You kept your precious mating mark covered and called the vows symbolic. Does that make it better for her?”His wolf pushed close to the surface. His eyes flashed gold.“Don't talk about Mara.”“Why? Because she's finally stopped doing whatever you tell her?”He struck her.The sound cracked through the hall.Vanessa held a hand to her cheek. For a moment, neither moved.“You hit me.”Adrian was breathing hard.“She loves me. You don't know anything about us.”“Then why was I in your bed?”He struck her again. This time, she caught the wall and stay

The papers slid across the table.PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE AND CHOSEN MATE BOND.Adrian read the heading twice before his legs gave way.The bond was already gone. He could feel the empty place where it had been, but some stubborn part of him had believed the papers would prove this was only a threat.Mara's proposed settlement was brief.First: payment for ten years of undercompensated work, calculated against the duties she had actually performed. She was not asking him to buy her forgiveness. She wanted what her labor had earned.Second: Finn would remain with Mara while custody arrangements were settled. His welfare and wishes were to be heard by an independent mediator. Adrian's rank would not decide the matter.Third: all further communication would go through counsel. At the bottom, she had added one line by hand. You wanted another chance with Vanessa. You have it.He pressed his thumb against the ink.“She knew.”The empty house held the words. On the stairs, she'd

“My mark is disappearing!”For a moment, he sounded genuinely shocked.I looked at my son. He was carefully coloring outside the lines, making the wolf’s fur bigger.“I’m leaving you, Adrian.”“Don’t be ridiculous.” Denial came fast. “I’ve been working all week. Did you not see my posts? I go home, I fall into bed, and you can’t even send a message.”“You’ve been home every night?”“Yes.”“Then how did you miss the separation papers on the dining table?”Nothing. Not even the sound of him breathing.“Mara.”I turned to the witness. She nodded once.“The renunciation has already been entered into the bond ledger,” I said. “And as of today, I resign as Luna of the Blackthorn Pack.”The fading mark beneath my collar burned as the final thread of our bond unraveled.Adrian made a choked sound.“No. You can’t—”The witness stated her name, her office and the time, formally closing the record.I pressed my palm flat against the table and let the pain pass through me.My wolf shuddered.
