Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
Once I recognized Vanessa's handwriting, I realized most of what filled those two boxes had come from her.

They saw each other every day, and yet they'd still chosen to write letters to each other.

A boy's shy, tentative overtures; a girl's answers laced with a hint of insecurity—it was all there, plain as day, between the lines.

Letters, postcards, scraps of paper, bookmarks, even candy wrappers—he'd kept every piece of her he could.

I flipped to the class photo on the first page of the yearbook and found her.

She'd been thin, so thin, barely a speck in the crowd.

Her almond-shaped eyes drooped slightly at the corners, giving her a soft look.

Our eyes looked alike.

I sank down onto the floor, and the tears came without warning.

Was I just another item in his collection of Vanessa Reed?

At the end of her graduation message, she'd written: Some things will never change. I'll see you again.

All those days and nights we'd spent together—had he been hoping for a reunion with Vanessa the whole time?

Looking at the weight of their shared past, Grayson suddenly felt like a stranger to me.

Once I'd gone through everything, I put it all back exactly where I'd found it.

I kept telling myself to stay calm, but the tears wouldn't stop.

Then my stomach cramped.

I scrambled up, ran to the bathroom, and retched over the toilet, a dull ache spreading through my abdomen.

Had the little life inside me sensed something?

I pressed a hand to my stomach, and my heart ached along with it. After all this, could I still keep this baby?

That evening, Grayson came home early for the first time in a month.

"I passed by that place you like and picked up a strawberry cake."

He set the cake down and reached for me, but I stepped out of his way.

"Still upset?"

He circled around to face me, studying my expression.

"Were you crying today?" His voice had gone soft.

I'd cried for most of the day. There was no hiding it now.

I had no idea, deep down, how to face him, so I looked away.

Grayson read my silence as a sign I was softening, that I'd been hurt and wanted comfort.

He spoke with a note of conciliation. "I looked into a policy recently that's perfect for you. I want to buy it for you as a sixth-anniversary gift. Want to go meet the agent with me tomorrow?"

I hesitated, then nodded.

It would be a lie to say six years of feeling could be let go of so easily. I wasn't ready to end things with him just on my own suspicions.

He was my husband, and the father of the child inside me. Whether we stayed together or not would affect that child's future. I really couldn't afford to act on impulse.

The meeting with the agent was arranged at the insurance office.

The moment I laid eyes on this so-called agent, a flash of white light went off in my head.

It was her. Vanessa.

Compared to high school, she'd filled out, her cheeks fuller now, her hair styled in loose waves, and her eyes carried more confidence, catching the light no matter where she turned.

Grayson and Vanessa went over the contract details with total composure. Neither of them slipped up once.

I sat there quietly beside them. Nobody bothered to ask my opinion.

Once the contract was settled, Vanessa added me on social media herself.

I couldn't resist scrolling through her feed as I walked out.

Her profile was completely public, full of posts showing off a rich, upbeat life.

I saw that the day after Grayson received that first text, she'd posted: [The longest dream of my girlhood has finally come true.]

The photo showed an enormous bouquet of deep red roses, with a lavishly decorated hotel room in the background. Only a sliver of Grayson's sleeve showed in the shot, but I recognized it instantly.

That same night, I'd caught the scent of flowers on his clothes.

He'd told me a business partner had sent flowers to the office.

Fool that I was, I'd actually believed him.

In that moment, I didn't feel the devastation I might have expected—just a strange, loosening relief. A whole day's worth of worry seemed to lift off my shoulders.

I could finally let go of him completely.

I gave a bitter laugh and rested a hand on my stomach, trying to feel for the faintest flutter of movement.

I wasn't going to keep enduring a marriage with Grayson. If I did, knowing myself, I'd spend the rest of my life imagining exactly what the two of them had done behind closed doors, and I'd never know peace.

And he would never give me the answer.

"I'm sorry... I know I was wrong..."Tears welled in Grayson's eyes."I lost my mind, I don't deserve you... Give me one more chance, just one..."He stumbled over his words, apologizing and pleading, groveling as low as he could go.It was an ugly, pitiful scene.Grayson had always longed for a real family. As a child, his parents had worked away from home year-round, and his grandmother had raised him. She wasn't the doting type—too lazy to cook in the summer heat, she'd feed him leftovers that had already gone bad. After we got married, he'd always wanted a child of his own.The more a childhood lacked warmth, the harder a person tried to make up for it once they had their own family. He'd been standing right at the threshold of the life he'd always dreamed of, and in the end, he'd wrecked it with his selfish actions.Watching him fall apart like this, wracked with regret, I understood clearly just how much pain he was in."Since you don't want to sign the agreement, we'l

My lawyer laid the reasoning out for Grayson plainly."I'm not canceling the policies." Grayson's expression hardened back into stubbornness, edged now with a kind of reckless defiance. "I earned that money. I get to decide what to do with it."That didn't surprise me at all.My lawyer turned to another page in the agreement."Mr. Redding, regarding your recent use of marital assets to purchase insurance, we've given it full consideration and drafted the corresponding clause."Grayson frowned and looked down to where the lawyer was pointing."You're required to pay my client, Denise Walton, twenty thousand dollars in cash, or provide equivalent assets in exchange."Given your current cash flow and the possibility of additional shared debts to be divided, fulfilling this compensation is very likely to leave you insolvent, in a state of net debt."The word debt clearly struck a nerve. Grayson grabbed the page, his eyes racing over it.When his gaze reached the bottom of the page

A month had passed since that meeting with Vanessa. My lawyer arranged for Grayson and me to meet and sign the divorce agreement. We met in a conference room at the law firm.Grayson showed up late, his face dark as storm clouds when he walked through the door.My lawyer slid the prepared agreement across the table to him and said politely, "Mr. Redding, please take a look."Grayson picked up the document, flipped through it in a cursory glance, and closed it."I'm not satisfied with this agreement."His expression was openly resistant.I looked up at him, and all I could feel was how absurd this was.Once we divorced, he'd be free to openly ride off into the sunset with Vanessa.Who exactly was this reluctant act for?Or did he still want to keep up appearances of a respectable marriage while playing the winner who got to have it both ways?I couldn't come up with any other explanation. I didn't understand him anymore. My lawyer kept his composure, asking evenly, "Which p

In the days leading up to the divorce, work, prenatal checkups, and meetings with my lawyer kept my life moving forward in an orderly rhythm.I already had my hands full, and there was no room left to spare a thought for people and things that no longer mattered to me.One evening, my friend Sophie Langston called just to chat. Her voice was as bright and breezy as ever. "Hey, is Grayson switching careers or something?"I paused for a second, then quickly guessed where this was going."What do you mean?""He's been posting a ton of insurance stuff on his feed lately—coverage plans, wealth transfer, all analyzed like he really knows his stuff."Grayson wasn't the type to post much. In all the years I'd known him, the first thing I ever saw him post was our wedding announcement.Even on the rare occasion he posted something, he'd set it to disappear after three days.I pulled up his feed, and sure enough, it was exactly like Sophie said. In just the past two weeks, he'd put up o

Grayson's call came that evening."Have you cooled off yet?" His tone was cold. That was his first question—which meant he still hadn't figured out I had no intention of going back to that house we'd shared."I've been perfectly calm the whole time."I knew exactly what I was doing."Say whatever you want. The company's leadership found out about what happened today, and they want an explanation." His tone left no room for argument. "You're going to write an apology letter and clear Vanessa's name."I found the whole thing absurd."I won't. Is there anything else? If not, I'm hanging up.""Denise, Vanessa is sensitive and fragile on the inside. What you said today already hurt her—you're the one who started this!" His voice rose. "Are you only going to be satisfied once she's forced to quit her job? Do you have any idea how much damage a few careless words can do to someone's years of hard work?"And what about the damage done to me?I'd worked so hard at this marriage, tried

Grayson's whole body jolted, his eyes going wide."What did you say? Divorce?"Vanessa's crying cut off instantly, and she stared at me in shock. Our commotion had already drawn the attention of plenty of employees outside the office. Several people were craning their necks to look our way.I held his gaze, steady. "Yes. I want a divorce.""I won't agree to it." Panic flashed across Grayson's face.He grabbed my arm and started pulling me toward the door. "Let's go home and talk this through properly."I yanked my hand back. "Go ahead and comfort her. My lawyer will be in touch."Over by Vanessa, a few people who looked like managers had come over to her side. She shot Grayson a pleading look.Grayson sighed and let go of my hand."I'm not agreeing to a divorce, no matter what. Go cool off for now."With that, he turned and walked back toward her.A bitter feeling spread through my chest. I knew, without a doubt, that I'd made the right call.Once I got home, I packed a ba
