Winning Back the Wife

Feel-Good Story

At the bachelor party the night before the wedding, the truth-or-dare penalty was brutal—show the most hidden photo on your phone. Gina, Peter's so-called "girl bro," lost. She just grinned and cast her screen onto the big TV. A marriage license filled the screen, stamped by the county clerk. Names: Peter Cooke and Gina Draper. Date: yesterday. The room went dead silent. I stared at Peter's drained face. Gina didn't flinch. She patted his shoulder. "Oops. Guess you found out. Joey, don't take it seriously. Just a dumb bet. I wanted to see what the county clerk's office looked like, so I dared Peter to register a marriage with me." She leaned in, eyes on me like I was the joke. "You're still getting your wedding tomorrow. The vows, the ceremony. I just borrowed your fiancé for a stamp. Don't tell me you're jealous of his buddy." Peter jumped up and pulled me in. "Babe, listen. You're the only one in my heart. It was just a joke." He pulled out the diamond ring, dropped to one knee. "I'll file for divorce first thing tomorrow. It won't mess up our noon wedding. Invites are already out. Don't make this a scene in front of my friends. Once we're married, all my money's yours, okay?" I smiled. He had no clue how any of this worked. Didn't even know divorce came with a thirty-day wait. I didn't take the ring. I pulled out my phone and blasted a group text canceling the wedding.

Chapter 1
The send notification cut through the room.Peter shot up and snatched my phone. He stared at the group chat. Panic flashed, then twisted into anger. "Joey Jensen, are you insane? I said I'd file for divorce tomorrow. You really had to take it this far? You trying to make me a joke in front of everyone?"Gina picked at her ear and snorted. "Peter, I told you—girls are drama. Can't take a joke without blowing it up."She swung a leg over the couch and sat there, chewing gum. "Joey, you're being way too uptight. Peter and I grew up like family. If I actually wanted him, you wouldn't even have had a shot. It's just paper. You really gonna kill the vibe over that?"A few of his buddies jumped in, same tune—I was the problem.I looked at the guy I'd loved for five years, cold. "If it's just paper, then go marry it tomorrow."I turned to grab my bag.Peter grabbed my wrist."If you walk out that door tonight, don't expect me to come crawling after you."He clenched his jaw, yanked

But my fiancé had legally married someone else yesterday.I don't know how long I cried. Then my phone started buzzing like crazy in my bag.The screen lit up—the hospital.I answered. A nurse's voice came fast and tight. "Is this Joey Jensen? Your grandmother just went into heart failure. She needs bypass surgery now. Please come sign the consent forms and make the payment right away."***Grandma was my only family. My parents died young. She raised me collecting recyclables.I ran to the street like I'd lost it, hands shaking so bad I could barely open a car door.By the time I got to the hospital, they'd already rushed her into the ER.A doctor came up, face tight, holding a critical notice. "She's in extremely critical condition. We need surgery now. With ICU after, it'll be about $300,000. Make the payment and we'll start immediately."Three hundred thousand.Everything I had—savings, years of wages—sat in a joint account under Peter's name.Back then, I called it tru

I reached the mediation room and looked in through the glass.Gina sat there, legs crossed, hair messy, a bruise on her lip.Peter stood next to her, holding an ice pack to her cheek like it mattered. His eyes were full of concern. "You're too reckless. Why would you even get into a fight with those guys?"Gina shrugged. "They wouldn't shut up. Kept harassing me. You're a real one, though, staying this late."Peter smiled, kinda helpless, and ruffled her short hair. "If I don't stay with you, who will? I already worked it out with them. We'll pay $200,000 and settle it off the record."The second he said money, I pushed the door open. They both looked over.Peter's face dropped. "Joey? You following me?"I walked straight up to him, eyes locked on the bank card in his hand. "You just said $200,000. You paying it with that?"He frowned like it was obvious. "So what if I am? Gina acted in self-defense. If she gets a record, how's she supposed to get a job? I'm lending it to her

By the time I got back to the hospital, they'd already moved Grandma to the morgue.A white sheet covered her small, fragile body—cutting off the last warmth I had.I didn't cry.I'd run out of tears sometime during that endless night.Numb, I handled the death certificate, called the funeral home, and watched them slide her into cold storage.Three years ago, Grandma held Peter's hand and placed mine in his. "Peter, Joey's had it rough. From now on, you're her support."Back then, he cried harder than I did and swore he'd take care of me for life.I thought I'd found shelter.Turns out, he was the storm.I pulled out the wooden hair clip he'd carved for me.The edges were worn smooth from years of holding it. It used to mean everything.I gripped it with both hands—and snapped it in half.Five years of loving him snapped with it.By the time I finished arranging Grandma's funeral, it was already noon. The exact time we were supposed to be saying our vows.I took a cab b

Peter stared at the paper.A full thirty seconds passed—then he burst out laughing. "You'd fake a death certificate just to get back at me? That seal's fake, right? Time of death—4:05 a.m.? We were at the station then!"He slapped it onto the coffee table.I watched him spiral. No arguing. No tears.I just pulled out my phone and hit play. The hospital's last call. 4:10 a.m.The doctor's voice came through, heavy with regret—sudden heart failure. She didn't make it.Peter's laughter died."Th-This is edited... right?"He lunged for my phone.I stepped back, eyes cold. "She's in the morgue. Want to go see for yourself?"He froze, hand hanging in the air.Footsteps rushed up outside. The door flew open.Gina walked in without knocking, oversized jacket on, an unlit cigarette between her lips."Peter, what's taking so long? Didn't you say you'd grab your stuff and go? Everyone's still waiting at the hotel."She glanced at the suitcases and scoffed. "What is this, Joey? Ru

She scoffed. "And half that money is Peter's. What gives you the right to take all of it?"I let out a cold laugh. "Out of that $420,000, $300,000 was my grandma's—her retirement from selling her house. The other $120,000 was my salary. Every dollar Peter made went into his failing company. Did he ever put a single cent into that account?"I looked at his pale face and slowed it down. "Peter, you know the truth. If this isn't handled right, I'll take it to your company. I'll make noise in your circle. Let's see who still wants to work with a guy who used his fiancée's life-saving money for his girl bro."I grabbed my suitcase and walked out. Didn't look back.Behind me, Peter was shouting, voice wrecked. Gina was cursing.I kept walking. The sunlight hit hard. I took a breath and stepped into the crowd.***Grandma's funeral was simple.I didn't tell any relatives back home. No ceremony.I bought a plain urn and picked a quiet spot in a suburban cemetery. The day of the buri

I looked at Gina and almost laughed. "So you really think that whole 'girl bro, no boundaries' thing is cute? You think what you and Peter have is... noble?"She froze, then tipped her chin up. "Of course. We grew up together. We've been through everything. What would someone like you—who showed up halfway through—know?"I nodded. "You're right. I don't."I let that sit for a beat. "I don't get why a grown woman would pressure her 'best friend' into getting a marriage license the night before his wedding."And I definitely don't get how that same 'best friend' could drain someone's emergency money while their grandma needed surgery—just to clean up her own mess."I held her gaze. "You were never his friend. You just liked calling dibs on someone else's fiancé."You hide behind that 'one of the guys' act to cover what you really are—selfish, vicious, with zero decency."Gina's face went red. She stepped up and jabbed a finger at me. "That's bullshit! Stop slandering me!"Peter g

I checked the door cam.Peter.Leaning on the frame, drunk, clutching something in his hand.I didn't open it. Hit the speaker. "Get lost."He heard me and slammed against the door. "Joey... open up... please... just open the door..."He lifted his hand to the camera. The wooden hair clip—snapped clean in half.He carved it for me five years ago. The day I moved out, I broke it and left it behind."I saw it... you broke it..." His voice was wrecked. Tears and snot all over his face. "You said it was your favorite. You kept it under your pillow... How could you break it? How could you not want me anymore?"He slid down the door and sat there."I sold the company... I'm finding a buyer. Once it's done, I'll pay you back... Just drop the lawsuit, okay? Give me one more chance... I swear, I won't talk to Gina again. I'll treat you right..."I watched him cry on the screen. My chest stayed quiet.Five years ago, when he carved that hair clip, the blade sliced his finger open.

Gina planted her hands on her hips. "We're legally married. That $200K? You paid it as my husband, from marital money. That makes it our debt. You want a divorce? Fine. Split it—$100K each—and I'll sign."Peter shook with rage, jabbing a finger at her. "You've got no shame. That was Joey's grandma's life-saving money. You said you'd pay it back after your bonus. Now it's 'marital property'?"Gina didn't flinch. She smacked his hand away. "No shame? Says who? You were the one flexing, throwing Joey's money around to look like a hero. Now she's gone, your company's tanking, and you want to pin it all on me?"She curled her lip. "We're married. That means we're tied together. You think you can ditch me and crawl back to Joey? Dream on."She grabbed the papers, ripped them up, and flung the pieces in his face. "I'm not divorcing you. As long as I don't sign, you're stuck with me."Peter snapped. His eyes went red as he lunged, grabbing her by the throat. "I'll kill you! You wrecked e
