I ran. Down the stairs, through the hallway, past Mabel who called after me, and straight out the front door. The sunlight blinded me and I stumbled on the stone steps, catching myself on the railing.

"Madam! Madam, wait!" Mabel's voice chased me.

A black car sat in the driveway. The driver, a man named Christopher, looked up from his phone when he saw me burst out of the house.

"Mercy Hospital," I said, yanking open the back door. "Now."

"Madam, I need to confirm with Master Victor before..."

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 163: Samuel and Grace

Victor's POVSamuel and Grace were near the window at the end of the corridor in the same arrangement they had been in after the previous day's session. They stopped talking when they saw us.Shaznay sat across from them. I remained standing for a moment."She placed the scholarship deliberately," Shaznay said. "She confirmed it."Samuel looked at her."Yes," he said."You knew," Shaznay said."I have known for years," Samuel said. "She communicated with me about it once, briefly, seven years ago. She told me the placement had been made specifically and explained her reasoning.""You held that for seven years," Shaznay said."Yes," Samuel said.Shaznay was quiet."You held it because telling me would have required explaining who she was," Shaznay said. "And explaining who she was would have opened questions you were not ready to answer.""Yes," Samuel said."Samuel," she said.He looked at her."It is done now," she said. "I know. You know. It is in the record."He nodded."I am sorry

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 162: What She Placed

Shaznay's POVI waited until Moses and Adjei had left the room. Then I went back to the gallery. She was still there. Putting something into her bag, unhurried enough that I thought she had been waiting."One question," I said. She looked at me."The scholarship," I said. "Did you place it specifically? Or flag an existing placement?"She held my gaze."I placed it," she said."Not from the general pool," I said."No," she said."Why me?" I said. She was quiet for a moment."I was watching what the network was doing with Foundation-connected scholarships," she said. "They were identifying students with connections to people they could use as leverage. They had already used Samuel's household connection in correspondence with him. I understood that whoever was placed in that scholarship next would be either a tool or a target.""You placed me before they could use the placement as a threat," I said."I had been watching your file," she said. "Your academic record showed a particular qu

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 161: After the Ruling

Victor's POVMoses set the folder on the table. He did not say anything. He set it down and stepped back.I opened it.The page was there. Plain paper. I recognized the handwriting before I had read a single word. The particular way he formed certain letters. The spacing between lines. All of it his.I read it.Seven lines. He wrote that he had built the partition as carefully as he knew how. He wrote that he had removed one page not because it contained something untrue but because he needed me to find the case on my own terms, without the weight of every explanation he could have added. He wrote that there was a person who had built the structure he had been given and who had watched everything from outside the record and who he had chosen not to name, because he believed she had always intended for the right outcome to occur. He wrote that he forgave her.Not because she had earned it. Because he chose to.He wrote that the Foundation was built for careful work and that he hoped I

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 160: The Cooperation Statement

Shaznay's POVThe session reconvened at eleven-forty.The judge entered, noted the second-chair's apprehension for the record, and moved forward."Given the developments of the past thirty minutes," she said, "the court will advance the defendant's cooperation statement. The defendant is invited to address the court directly."Valda stood. She looked at the bench."The cooperation statement I submitted this morning covers three matters," she said. "I will also add a fourth matter which I have communicated to my representation within the last half hour.""Proceed," the judge said."First," Valda said. "The attack on the Emmanuel household. I did not order it. I did not know it was being planned. I learned it had occurred from the second-chair attorney, who described it as a necessary protective measure. I did not accept this characterization. He told me he had constructed documentation connecting my name to the financial authorization chain in a way that would read as direction from me

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 159: What Samuel Said

Victor's POVMoses pushed the door open. The room was small. Shelving on three walls. A workstation on the left with a monitor running. An older server unit in the back right corner, its indicator light steady and green. The second-chair stood near the workstation. He was holding a cable, disconnected from the server's back panel. He had not yet connected it to anything. He was looking at Samuel.Samuel was in a chair he had pulled from beside the shelving. He had come up four floors, apparently with help or alone. He looked like someone who had spent the last of a significant reserve to be sitting in this particular chair at this particular moment. He did not stop talking when we came in."That cable will not do what you are hoping," Samuel said. "You are not going to connect it because connecting it is not going to help you now."The second-chair had looked at the door when Moses pushed it open. He had looked at me specifically, in the way a person looks at someone they have been aw

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 158: During the Recess

Shaznay's POVThe hearing room was almost empty once the judge left.Adjei had gone to the corridor to make calls. The defense's new representation had followed. The court officer stood at his station. The recorder reviewed her notes.I sat at the prosecution table alone.Moses had told me to stay. Someone needed to be here when the session reconvened. I understood the reason. But sitting in this room with Victor gone and the session paused felt like waiting inside a held breath. After a few minutes I heard a movement at the low barrier.Valda was standing at the rail. She was not crossing toward the prosecution table. She was standing at the barrier, hands at her sides, looking at me.I looked back."May I speak to you?" she said.I had not expected this. She had not looked at me directly during three days of proceedings. She had looked at the bench, at documents, at the judge."Yes," I said. She came forward and sat in Adjei's chair, one seat from mine. She sat the way she always sa
